Teaching Shabbat. .. "AU About Sbavuot And The Book of Rutb" Friday May 26

Shavuot is often the "forgotten" of our three major Pilgrimage Holidays. If it were not for Confirmation, which is celebrated on Shavuot, it is possible that Shavuot might be relegated to the status of Tisha B'Av or Tu Bishvat in our Reform Communities. And yet, tradition teaches us that Shavuot is one of our major Festivals, with many deep and beautiful rituals and traditions.

At this month's "Teaching Shabbat Service", Rabbi Straus will explore with us many of the "forgotten" customs and traditions associated with Shavuot, and introduce us to the Book of Ruth - one of the wonderful gems of the Bible.

E.T.: Early Torah Discussion Group Saturday Mornings in May at 9:30 am

E.T., the spirited study and discussion hour led by Rabbi Straus on Saturday mornings at 9:30, will take place in May every Saturday, the 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th. No former experience is necessary, nor is any advanced study or preparation required. Light refreshments are always served.

REUGIOUS SCHOOL REPORTS by Ann Kanarek

As the school year comes to a close, it is satisfying to look back at all that our students have learned and accomplished. Our students were so enthusiastic about their progress that they wanted to share their thoughts and best memories with the Congregation:

The Third Graders enjoyed their midweek afternoons at Hebrew School. "We had a pizza party when we finished learning the alefbet ... we had fun activities like drawing Alefbet cartoon characters, Hebrew hockey, learning about children in Israel and making groggers ... getting pencils and stickers for completing all our work was great, too!"

Fourth Graders had many highlights. "We enjoyed acting out the Samson and Delilah story with props and costumes ... playing the board game "Challenger," "Guess the Our Staff, left to right: Judy Wolf, Nancy Concool, Lisa Kimmelman, Bible Character" game and Jeopardy ... we liked writing our Beth Darman, Susan Sacks, Baru Saul, Charlene Kahlenberg, Jill own 10 Commandments and learning about our Family Pakman, Susan Dorfman

Trees, making our own seder plates and Haggadahs ... we thought that our Shabbat PACT program and the Rock Shabbat were the best."

Fifth Grade was exciting. "We liked our afternoon Choose Your Own Jewish Adventure stories and snacking on teddy grahams ... playing Hebrew games ... making wooden Megillah scrolls .. .learning about Jewish immigration ... and our TZEDAKAH PACT program and the Torah Scribe were the greatest."

Sixth Graders thought this year was awesome. "Our Shabbat Potluck dinner and service was cool... we enjoyed all the music, it made learning our prayers fun ... we now know the entire Friday night service ... and what's more important is that we learned the meaning of becoming B'nai Mitzvah and why we should become one."

Seventh Grade was memorable. "We had an exciting year filled with learning about Jewish values and Judaism ... marriage and the Ketubah ... reading various stories and watching videos about the Holocaust ... Hebrew Tic-Tac-Toe ... making the props, posters and preparing for our play."

It is thanks to our devoted group of teachers that all of our students had such a successful year. As we mark the end of the school year, we recognize the hard work and dedication of our staff at Yom Hamoreh Teacher Recognition Shabbat, on Friday, May 19, at 7:30PM. Join us as we honor our esteemed faculty:

Nancy Concool Lynn Hoffman Jill Pakman

Bonnie Cusack Charlene Kahlenberg Eli Raam

Beth Darman Lisa Kimmelman Susan Sacks

On behalf of the faculty and school, I would like to thank the parents for your support and help throughout the year; and, most especially, for giving us the pleasure of working with your children.

Thank you to Sisterhood Religious School Vice Presidents, Barbara Weiner and Judy Millner, for helping us to make our holiday celebrations special.

Thank you to Religious Education Chairperson, Ellen Kirsch, and her committee for their encouragement and efforts all year.

Seventh Grade Siyum (Commencement) Service, Friday, May 19, 7:30PM

On Friday, May 19, we will have an opportunity to celebrate with our seventh graders at their siyum service. This special service marks the completion of one segment of our students' Jewish education here at Har Sinai Temple, and the beginning of another, the Confirmation program.

This is an exciting event for which our seventh graders have been eagerly working. The theme of this year's service is Tikkun Olam: Repairing the World. Their play "Part of the Solution" beautifully explains how each one of us can change the world.

Please join us as our seventh grade students "graduate" from Hebrew school and share their service with the congregation.

We all join in congratulating our High School Seniors and College Seniors . on their respective graduations, In the June bulletin, we would like to list all

of their names so please, parents, send us the vital information, .. name, college, etc.

College and graduate school are expensive programs. Fortunately, several scholarship and loan funds are available for members of our community and our congregation .

The Charles Levy Scholarship Fund was established by the family of the late Charles Levy to provide scholarships for the children of members of Har Sinai who attend the University of Pennsylvania and take at least one class per semester at Wharton School of Business. Families must be members in good standing of the Temple. To receive further information on how to apply, please call the rabbi.

The Student Loan Fund of the Mercer/Bucks Federation makes student loans and is available for both graduate and undergraduate level students of our community who display academic accomplishment and who need financial aid. The loan is completely interest free! Repayment of the loan is due two years after the recipient's graduation. Applications are made through the Federation office. The Student Loan Fund Committee will review all applicatiOns. All applications are strictly confidential. For information or an application please call the Federation office, (609) 883-5000.

The Joseph M. Blum Medical Scholarship Fund, established by Dr. Blum, provides scholarship money for tuition to medical school for Jewish students from our community. Recipients of the Blum Scholarship must repay the trust, without interest, within a period of 10 years after she or she commences the practice of medicine. For further information, please call the rabbi, or Edward Kahn at 609-895-1190.

SOCIAL ACTION COMMflTEE NEWS RACE AGAINST HUNGER • SUNDAY, MAy 7TII

by Steve Cickay, Chairperson The easiest kind of social action project is one where you

can have a really good time and still do something good for others. The Har Sinai Social Action Committee has found just such a fun way to get everyone in the Jewish and non-Jewish communities involved in helping the hungry. We have created the Second A nnual Har Sinai Race Against Hunger which will take place on Sunday morning, May 7th, in the New Jersey Washington Crossing State Park. Last year we attracted over 140 runners and collected about $2,000 in cash and food for the hungry. This year we hope to be even more successful. Runners from all over the Mid-Atlantic Region will converge on the park to compete in a 5K road race. Children will also be running in a 1.0 mile Fun Run. All runners will get a free Tshirt and a chance to win special prizes. There will be prizes for not only the first male and female finsiher of the 5K race (a free night stay at the

Princeton Marriott along with free dinner and breakfast!), but also prizes to the top three finishers in seven age categories, both male and female! A total of 44 prizes will be awarded including free dinners at Marselio's Restaurant in Trenton, free brunch at Isaac Newton's in Newtown, free movie tickets, and much, much more. After the race there will be free refreshments for the runners and massages from a profeSSional masseuse for the tired!

And while this is going on, we will have raised money for organizations that are involved with feeding the hungry. All runners are required to pay a small entrance fee ($10) and bring a canned food item. All money and food raised from the race will go directly to organizations involved in feeding the

hungry: the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK), the Princeton Exchange Club, the Princeton Crisis Ministry, and MAZON.

We must give special thanks to the corporate sponsors of our race. Just like last year, Mr. Jim McCaffrey, who owns the McCaffrey's Supermarkets in Princeton and Yardley, came through for us again with a large cash contribution that helped pay for the expenses involved in organizing such an event. United Jersey Bank also came through again with a sizable cash contribution just like last year. Marriott Hotels also helped out with their excellent first place prizes. All the smaller businesses who donated the 4 2 other race prizes deserve to be thanked since, through their donations, no money from Har Sinai was used to fmance this event.

So please show your support. Come run in the race or tell your friends who like to run to come to the park on May 7th. You needn't be a Jesse Owens to run in our race! Last year we had a 79 year old man run and he did very well! If you can't run, just come to the park to cheer the runners on and enjoy the snacks. Volunteers are still needed on the day of the race to pass out Tshirts. collect the money. and set up refreshments. Call me on 215-86(}-7641 if you want to help. If you can't make it to the park that day but are concerned with helping those who are hungry in our community, you can use this opportunity to make a donation to our race fund. With the way things are going in politiCS lately, such private support is needed now more than ever before.

I hope to see you at the race and let's all hope that it doesn't rain!

Temple Cemetery and

Memorial Plaques Har Sinai has a most beautiful

Memorial Park in Ewing Cemetery. It is a dignified and serene resting place for our members and their loved ones. The thoughtful purchase of a suitable family plot years before any actual need arises, is an important obligation for all families.

If your family does not yet have this protection, Joel Orland, Chairperson, will be happy to discuss the purchase of a suitable family plot, companion or single graves. Call him at 883-1400.

Hospital Visits

Rabbi and Cantor make regular visits to all of our members in area hospitals, but they need your help. The hospitals do not call and tell us if a member has been admiued. So, please, if you know of a member who is i l l and in the hospital, call the Temple office and let us know. And do not assume we already know, or that someone else has

called. By telling us, you help the rabbi and cantor perform the important mitzvah of bikkur cbolim, visiting the sick. Thanks!
