Location: 420 South Beverwyck Road

Benjamin Howell III built this two and a half story clapboard sided post & beam constructed colonial revival home in c 1771. Benjamin Howell III son, Monroe, purchased the house from his mother’s estate in 1853. He married on Henrietta Clay Stevens (June 13, 1849) the daughter of Major William Stevens who was active in the War of 1812 and a postmaster at Newark, N.J. Monroe Howell was the first postmaster of Troy Hills and operated a General Store for many years. He added big columns and porch to the house in 1900, giving the house a Greek revival appearance. The house was purchased in 1930 by Charles Edison the 42ND Governor of New Jersey (1941-1944) and son of Thomas A. Edison. The house was converted to a restaurant and a private club. In 1940 front pillars and portico were removed and the house was converted to apartments. In 1982 the house became the Beverwyck Nursing Home, which it is today.
