Happy Valentine’s Day 2015
To SOU
from the Oregon Writing Project!
Oregon Writing Project at SOU: School, District, and Community Partnerships
Highlights from 2014-‐15 / Summer 2015 “Teaching argument-‐writing” seminar. Offered as a workshop, or for two graduate credits, for teachers grades 6-‐ college. Eight meetings during the academic year at the Higher Education Center (HEC) in Medford. Teachers across grade levels and subject areas, from Jackson, Josephine and Klamath Counties, as well as RCC, participated. Facilitated by two Teacher Consultants from the Oregon Writing Project at SOU. High-‐needs-‐school partnership grant. This $20,000 federal grant (awarded spring 2014) supports professional development during 2014-‐15, for all of the teachers and the principal at Ruch School (Medford District). Professional development co-‐planned by the school principal, and the director of the OWP. Focus on argument-‐writing skills across grade levels and subject areas. Digital Storytelling Project, Ruch School 2015. Eight-‐week project in a Medford district middle school language arts class. Lead teacher Abram Katz, local digital storyteller and audio engineer, also mentored four SOU undergraduates (education majors) who worked as classroom assistants and co-‐teachers, while the classroom teacher learned the digital storytelling process along with students. Focus on integrating narrative and argument writing. Authors’ club and book-‐publishing for first graders. Coaching the first grade teacher and supporting instruction in the writing process at Ruch Community K-‐8 School. Students receive free copies of their books, and read at an authors’ reception at the Jackson County Ruch Branch Library, to kick off Summer Reading Programs. “Grammar-‐Writing Connection for Teachers.” Intensive week-‐long workshop for teachers grades 6-‐college. June 2015 at the HEC in Medford. Offered as a workshop for professional development units, or as ED507 for graduate credit. Teachers from Jackson County, Josephine County, RCC, as well as student teachers from SOU’s MAT program are expected to attend. Listed by SOESD and on southern Oregon school district websites. Literacy Leadership Institute. Summer 2015. Like our 2014 summer institute, this three-‐week intensive institute is devoted to developing teachers’ writing, teaching, and leadership skills. K-‐college teachers apply as Summer Fellows, supported by a federal SEED (Supporting Effective Educator Development) grant. Participants will become OWP teacher consultants, who can offer professional development workshops to K-‐college colleagues regionally. “Introduction to writer’s workshop.” August, 2015. This one-‐week intensive workshop will provide teachers with practice, materials, and methods that will enable them to implement the writer’s workshop approach in their classroom in the fall. Although geared to upper-‐elementary and middle-‐grades teachers, methods are adaptable to all grade levels; all interested southern Oregon teachers are invited to apply. Listed by SOESD and on school district websites. Professional development workshop for Advanced Southern Credit (ASC) teachers of English language arts. Winter 2015. Held at SOU campus, for teachers of high school classes that award SOU credits. “Annotating smartly and summarizing sharply.” Young Authors Camps. Summer 2014. One-‐week camps in Medford, Ashland, and Grants Pass for students ages 9-‐18. OWP teacher consultants mentor pre-‐service teachers who assist at the camps. Partnership with SOESD Migrant Education and each school district provides scholarships to eligible students. Fall young authors’ reception and reading on the SOU campus; participants receive a free copy of the camp anthology, thanks to a generous donation from the Grange Co-‐op.
Happy Valentine’s Day 2015 To SOU from the Oregon Writing Project!
The Oregon Writing Project (OWP) is grateful to the SOU administration for over 20 years of supporting effective writing instruction in our region’s K-‐college classrooms. At the heart of the Oregon Writing Project: intensive summer institutes that help develop teachers from all grade levels and content areas, in three ways: as writers themselves, as teachers of writing, and as teacher-‐leaders. In addition to summer institutes, the OWP offers a variety of professional development workshops for teachers year-‐round, and summer ‘young authors’ camps’ for students. We value our longstanding connection with the National Writing Project, the work we do as ‘teachers teaching teachers,’ and the connections between SOU and the many southern Oregon school districts that we work with. Most importantly, we value and appreciate the support of Southern Oregon University. These valentines are from a few of the OWP teachers who attended a ‘renewal meeting’ at SOU on February 5, 2015 –-‐ they represent the many teachers whose hearts (and classroom practice) have been touched by the Oregon Writing Project over the past two decades, and with whom we continue to collaborate. These valentines attest to the way the OWP fosters the connection between the university and our regional educational community. With gratitude for your continued support, Margaret Perrow Associate Professor, English / Director, Oregon Writing Project at SOU
