Sponsor for this month:
Happy Valentine’s
Day from the staff
at First Lutheran
Church!
Lent—2016
In this month of February, we will come again to the journey and discipline of Lent. We will ‘return to Lord, your God’ for sustenance and strength. We will be reminded again that God is in control of this creation and will bring it to it’s fulfillment. We will be brought again to the foot of the cross to see a loving God who in Christ has redeemed us and given us new life. This new life for all of us is to be the freshness of spring, no matter what the season. Spring will come, seeds will be planted, we will be warm again.
We invite you to participate in our Lenten services! We will begin with the Ash Wednesday service on February 10th at 7:00P.M. We will be having a meal together this year prior to the Ash Wednesday service beginning at 5:30P.M. in the Fellowship Hall. Pastor Christina and I will again be participating with other ELCA pastors in our area in a ‘round robin’ format.
There are some changes this year compared to past Lenten seasons. This year we will only have a meal prior to the Ash Wednesday service on February 10th. This meal will be a “ German Supper” , featuring made from scratch cheese buttons, knoephla and kraut. We will not be serving meals for the mid-week Lenten services this year on February 17th and 24th, March 2nd, 9th and 16th. Over the last couple of years the attendance at the Lenten meals has dropped significantly; in 2014 the youth barely broke even on the suppers, and in 2015, the cost to prepare the meals was more than what they took in. In that these Lenten suppers are a fund raiser for our youth, it does not make sense for the youth to lose money on this project. We will still have Little Ceasar’s pizza available for the Wednesday School youth during the season of Lent.
This year the ‘round robin’ is gathered around the theme of “Open My Life, Lord”. We have another participating congregation in our round robin this year, Trinity Lutheran of Bismarck. We are excited to have another congregation participating this year! As we gather for our mid-week Lenten services this year, Pastor Wes Aardahl from Faith Lutheran will be here on February 17th; Pastor Renee Splical-Larson from Heart River Lutheran will be here on February 24th; Pastor Ray Anderson from Living Water Lutheran will be here on March 2nd; Pastor Steve Sathre from Trinity Lutheran will be here on March 9th and Pastor Jon Splical-Larson from Faith Lutheran will be here on March 16th.
“Go into the world with eyes open to the transforming light of Christ, hands open to serve those you meet, ears open to the call of the Spirit, mouths open in praise of your grace, minds open to your leading, hearts open to the bountiful love of God, spirits open to the freshness of your word, and lives open to follow Christ to the cross.”
Until next time,
Pastor Lee

Easter is right around the corner. As we prepare to celebrate the
resurrection of our Lord Jesus, it is also a wonderful time to beautify
our church and honor our loved ones. The youth of our church are
selling Easter Garden Flowers. They will purchase a mix of Lilies and
Mums to decorate the Sanctuary for Easter. Flowers may be picked up
after the 11:00 A.M. Easter service. Order forms will be available in
the narthex starting January 31st. Orders can be placed in the offering

place late orders!)
MORE THAN 20 YEARS AGO, the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from a single youth group:
“Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be
mindful of those without a bowl of soup to eat.”
Since that day, more than $98 million has been raised for local charities across the country through Souper Bowl of Caring. It has become a powerful movement that is transforming the time around Super Bowl weekend into the nation’s largest celebration of giving and serving. Through this mission, young people learn what it’s like to make a positive difference in the world – as they collect food, raise money and volunteer to work in charities that provide shelter to the homeless, food to the hungry and compassion to those in need. Be part of this movement that is sharing God’s love with those in need. Please give generously on Super Bowl Sunday. The money we collect from First Lutheran will go to Community Action’s Backpack for Kids program, our 2016 Souper Bowl of Caring
charity of choice. We will take donations on February 7th at both services.
