BULLETIN EDITOR – Lion Marge Ollis Happy New Year everyone. I hope everyone had a restful and relaxing Christmas break.

Our break saw Stewart add another birthday to his collection, ripe age of 72!

Stewart and I took a “road trip” down the south coast and Canberra, (left the van at home), met up and

stayed with relatives and friends during January. February we have a “road trip” to Coffs Harbour to

take up my “Early Bird” prize won at the Sawtell/Bonville Convention. We will be on the road for about

5 days and hope to catch up with some of the Lionsonoz members.

I am sure there are some wonderful stories and photos taken over the Christmas break, I hope they end up in my

INBOX.

Were there any members who were able to answer the call by Lion Warren to help the Tamworth Peel Valley Lions

Club at the Tamworth Music Festival? This is one event I want to be part of “at least once” so maybe Tamworth Peel

Valley Lions Club could give us information earlier for next year that could be included in the Bulletin.

A “little bird” told me that some of our members are considering going to the DARWIN LIONS BEER CAN

REGATTA – JULY 12th 2015 – I have included the email again in this Bulletin for those who missed it

before.

I have been having trouble with one of my email addresses, so if you can use the SKYMESH address or send to both

would be great.

Articles for the Bulletin to be emailed to Lion Marge Ollis by 7th of each month please.

At [email protected] or [email protected].

Single-Serve Cheesecake Kathryn Bennett

If you are dining alone and don’t want to cook up a storm, there is no need to miss out on dessert.

Why not spoil yourself and indulge in this decadent, single-serve cheesecake? It’s absolutely

delicious and the perfect size so you won’t over indulge.

Serves: One Time: Two hours

Ingredients

60g low fat cream cheese, softened to room temperature

1/2 cup sour cream

1/4 teaspoon vanilla

2 tablespoons sugar

2 tablespoons egg white, slightly beaten

1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

1/2 teaspoon cornflour

1 tablespoon mini chocolate chips

1 tablespoon jam of choice

Method

In a small bowl using a handheld electric mixer, beat the cream cheese until light and fluffy. Mix in

the sour cream, vanilla, sugar, egg, lemon juice and cornflour. Whisk for two minutes until light in

colour.

Pour into a microwave-safe mug and add the chocolate chips and jam. Microwave on medium for

two and half minutes. The centre should start to bubble. Take out of the microwave and let cool to

room temperature and then refrigerate until fully chilled.

REPORT SECTION

President’s Report January 2015 - Lion Neil Bilney

Time for me to settle down and be normal, looking after and feeding everyone in the household. No more going feral in the bush for Pauline and I, although I did make a new friend whilst at Cane Break Conservation Park. I have been sitting on top of his night time home very evening for a week. I did find a much better place for taking bird photos after this.

In the same danger rating, mother in law, Helen, is back in WA after 5 months in QLD. I think she must have missed me! What surprised me was the number of single mums in an old car, basic tent with child in tow requiring to live in the National Parks as that is the only accommodation they can afford. It seems the only areas with work has so little accommodation and what is there is beyond the average person means. Brings one back to reality

with your own problems very quickly. I guess what I am getting to is, it doesn’t take much of an effort to make a huge difference to someone down on their luck. Simply telling the single mum “don’t worry about the $7 a day camp fees” you would think she had won lotto by her gratitude.

A regular guests at our home address for the month of January.

Secretary’s Report January 2015 – Lion Gwyneth Payne

January is generally a busy month in regards to Lions as it is the beginning of the

nominations and election process for the next Lions Year 2015- 2016

As with every other Lions Club the process is as follows:

Nominations Committee: Article IX Section B of the Standard Form Club Constitution requires the Club President to appoint a Nominations Committee. The Club President is responsible for the appointment of a Nominations Committee during December/January of each year. This committee should comprise a small number of experienced Lions, preferably under the chairmanship of a past President. The task of the committee is to select at least one member of the Club to stand for each of the vacant positions for the forthcoming year and to ensure they are willing and able to take on the position for which they are to be nominated. If necessary, the committee must encourage newer members to stand for office. At the time of appointment of the committee it may be found to be helpful to circulate each member of the Club requesting their preferences for Club Office during the forthcoming year, and have members return those preference s to the Chairman of the Nomination committee. A clear distinction should be made between “Club Office” as defined by the Club Constitution and appointments that are the prerogative of the Club President. Following his/her formal election-the nominations committee should only deal with elected positions. The committee must ensure that newer members receive adequate consideration and resist the temptation to renominate existing officers because “they know the job”. At the same time, the committee having regard to all the circumstances, should select the best member available for each position, remembering that there are excellent facilities for training in the majority of districts together with information support by way of manuals etc for President, Secretary and Treasurer. Nominations Committee Report The Committee should report to the President prior to the date of the Nominations meeting which should be held during February, submitting at least one name for each position. A commonly held misconception is that the committee may submit only one name for each position - this is not the case. Any number of suitable nominations may be submitted for each position by the committee if the Club so prefers. Alternatively, the Club may prefer that only a complete board selection is offered by the committee. Election Procedure – Nominations Meeting The Club Secretary must give 10 days’ formal written notice of the venue, date and time of the nominations Meeting to each pre paid-up member. It is strongly recommended that such notice should include a reminder that any paid up member is entitled to submit further nominations for any or all elected positions subject only to those nominated agreeing to serve; together with a list of those members nominated by the committee. The Nominations committee should not be seen as controlling the appointment of the officer bearers for the coming year and at all stages it should be clear to Club Members that alternative nominations are welcomed at the Nominations meeting. The task of the committee is solely to ensure that a full list of suitable nominations for all elected positions is available at the nominations meeting. Election Meeting Following the nominations meeting, an election meeting must be held during March, to comply with the MD201 reporting requirements and in accordance with Article X Section D of the Club Standard Form Constitution. The Secretary must give a minimum of two weeks prior written notice of the meeting, which must include the date, time, and venue of the meeting together with the

names of all those nominated for each position. Further nominations CANNOT be accepted at the Election Meeting, other than in the circumstances outlined in Article X Section C of the Club Standard Form Constitution. Notification of Elected Officers Following the election meeting, the Club Secretary must immediately, and in any case no later than 31st March notify the elected officers for the ensuring Lions year commencing upon 1st July to the Cabinet Secretary

The District Governor Peter Willis-Jones will be having his Official Visit to the Lions Club of

Australian Lionsonoz at the February 16th Meeting 2015.

I am sure that all our members will endeavour to be on line for this important visit.

Membership Chairman’s Report– Lion Stewart Payne

REYCLING: Eye Glasses -Lion Barry Gazzard

Editor’s Note: Please remember to collect any eye glasses you happen

across and contact Lions Barry Gazzard for assistance with disposal of these.

good project or they will send them to The Lions Club of South West Rocks

who also collects eyeglasses. A good project to be involved with. Lion Barry Gazzard contact email is [email protected]

Ring Pulls -Lion Brenda Payne I have nothing to report for the month of January.

Regards Lion Brenda

Dear Colleagues in Lionsonoz,

Happy New Year to all. I started my Lions year getting your best wishes

out to the January Birthday people Stewart, Lesley, John, Betty Anne

and Rolly. Hope you all started the year well and that this year is a little

slower than the last few which seem to have just flown by.

In early December our Helen McLeod had some surgery on her eyes and then had a very bad

reaction to the eye drops. This resulted in her having a variety of tests and these led to the

discovery of and diagnosis of vascular dementia which restricts the blood flow to the brain. Ever

since then she has been having tests and changing hospitals to get improved results in her health.

She is currently home and is on the mend, but still has some recovery in front of her. She has

been well supported by husband Don and also Yvie and Kel and many other friends. It was good

to speak to her and find that she is very positive and looking forward to celebrating their 50th

Wedding anniversary this year. Best wishes Helen and Don. We all know it is hard for the support

team too.

I also spoke to Merilyn Languish and I am pleased to say that whilst she is still battling to be well

enough to have her chemo every three weeks and her liver is acting up, she has done remarkably

well to recover so well from such major surgery and is currently enjoying being at home and even

helped Reg tidy all the pot plants. This gave her a great sense of achievement and boosts her

great strong will and determination. Best wishes also to Reg because the partner support is so

special and he has been with her for every chemo treatment in the past three years. They are both

looking forward to catching up with everyone in Newcastle.

Bob Buckley is continuing his chemo treatment and showing gradual improvement. He loves to get

that almost normal rating. Most days are great and he is enjoying activities at our resort (especially

the bowls) but every now and then gets some unexplained pain and has “bad day”.

To the best of my knowledge everyone else in the club is ok. Please keep in touch. The spirit of

our club depends on contact and we can get to know each other well through online chats and

phone calls.

Best wishes to all for a happy 2015 and if you haven’t signed up for Newcastle convention yet do it

now while you are thinking about it.

NO KEL, IT’S DONE LIKE THIS!!

WOOLGOOLGA CHRISTMAS PARTY

At the recent Grafton Lions Christmas Party I snapped

this photo of Lion Don McLeod and Lion Kel Kearns

discussing the quickest way to peel a prawn.

He was showing Kel how to peel the shell off the back

of the prawn, eat the tail then pick the meat out of the

head with the spike to get that extra bit of prawn. Talk

about recycling this appears to going a bit over board.

YUK!!!

At this point I don’t think the lesson was going

too well.

The look on Kel’s face is one of full

concentration and Don appears to be yelling in

frustration at Kel.

Anyway by the time the lesson was over, with

bits of prawn all over the table and floor the

rest of the Lions had got into the prawns and

eaten the lot, so the two guys having perhaps

learned the skills of prawn peeling have

learned a valuable lesson. Eat then discuss

details later.

During the evening it was my pleasure to present a 30 year Monarch Award to Lion Greg Jackson

a member of the Woolgoolga Lions Club.

LIONS CLUB OF GRAFTON

Kel and I enjoyed an evening out with

KNITTING REPORT

December – January, 2015

The past couple of months have

been considerably quite naturally

because of Christmas and the festive

season. Who wants to knit whilst there are parties going on?

However, I do have in my cupboard several baby items which I

am in the process of doing up into packages to deliver to

maternity wards during our travels.

Moree hospital has asked me to do some items in aboriginal colours as the young women really go

for these. Pictured is showing a tiny jumper with matching beanie. Kel and I will not be going out

west to Moree in the near future and if anyone from our club are in that area, perhaps these can be

dropped off for me.

I have made several small bears which will soon be delivered to the Coffs Harbour Hospital to the

radiology section, these are used to help settle the little children during x rays, scans etc. The

nurse told me at the end of the procedure the child gets to take the teddy home.

I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and healthy 2015r and look forward to catching

up with you all.

Santa visited Grenfell once again this

season calling in to the HACCS

Christmas Party , The MPS Aged care

party, Dramatic Society Children's Party,

Bowling Club Children's Party,

Rotary Christmas party and a local

Crèche. Unfortunately Santa was no

good at doing " selfies "and is unable

to send any photographs.

However he did manage to get a

picture of Ruby Claus, his granddaughter, who was a Santa helper and this is attached.

Warren’s Knitting Venture - PDG Lion Warren White

Another box of 100 knitted garments arrived from Coonabarabran last week, destined for the AIDS

effected children of certain parts of Africa. A 90 year old lady Ellen Murdock keeps active by

knitting these garments and they are done beautify. Unfortunately the African outlook is now

practically closed due to graft problems among the bureaucrats in a lot of the African countries.

This time I have given them to the Bush Aids Society (BCA) to be distributed to our own Aboriginal

children in the various centres that the BCA members visit in their travels around Australia. These

travellers are a bunch of volunteers who regularly visit the outlying missions and Aboriginal

settlements, at their own expense to render any aid they can such as building and maintaining

community structures, teaching both the children and the adults various skills and just generally

helping out in the Lord’s name.

Pictured is Lion Warren handing over the knitted garments to Mrs Pauline Norton who will

distribute them to BCA members visiting Aboriginal centres throughout Australia.

Also Pictured is Frank Norton proudly

showing Lion Warren a fantastic

collection of items carved out of

beeswax and bottles of honey put

together by his late Grandfather.

Service Hours

I have been fortunate enough to be able to assist Tamworth Peel Valley Lions with their Christmas

projects.

TPV Lions get really busy leading up to

Christmas and then again in January when

they cater for the Country Music fans who

visit Tamworth from all over the world.

Before Christmas the Lions man a stall either

at Shopping World or Kmart Plaza selling

Christmas cakes, slices, puddings and

emergency medical books as well as their

main project, selling tickets in the Christmas

raffle. Vouchers of $750, $400 and $100 on

various local shops are the prizes and they

are very popular.

In January the TPV Lions Club are flat out

obtaining, storing, cutting up and selling fresh fruit salads in cups. A very welcome treat on a hot

day. At night they man the doors for

various concerts and also take on

traffic duty for various functions, so if

you are ever in the vicinity of

Tamworth during the Country Music

festival in January, please offer your

services to TPV. You will be made

most welcome.

The Keen Fishermen

Picture the scene. It is the park at Coffs

Harbour when a Policeman walks by and

spots three men sitting on a park bench.

The middle one is reading a newspaper but

the other two are fishing.

They are baiting imaginary hooks, casting

out imaginary lines and reeling in imaginary

fish and thoroughly enjoying themselves

while they are doing it.

The Policeman, who had no sense of humour gruffly told them to move on, so the fishermen wound up their imaginary lines,

the middle man put down his newspaper, picked up a pair of imaginary oars and rowed off.

Fishing

Report Mud Crabs

At the last meeting, mention

of Mud Crabs prompted me to

clarify a matter.

I was talking to a fisherman

from Queensland recently and

the subject of Mud Crabs

came up. He said that the

rules regarding Mud Crab

captured in Queensland is

causing unforseen problems.

The Queensland rules state

that only legal size male Mud Crabs can be taken, the females have to be returned to the water. In

NSW both legal size sexes can be taken except females carrying eggs, which must be returned to

the water.

Now it seems that the crab’s situation in Queensland is in a dilemma. Unless the male crab is big

enough and strong enough to subdue the female she won’t mate. The situation is arising where

the big males have been taken and only small males remain. The female crab can outfight the

males now and frequently kill them and so mating and future breeding is in jeopardy. Frightening

isn’t it. We think we are doing the right thing and muck up the balance of nature.

On another related note, I was fishing in the Bellinger River (NSW) when I noticed a small female

Mud Crab on the surface of the water appearing to be struggling to swim. I netted her to have a

closer look.

The female crab was not much bigger than a 50cent piece but she was loaded with eggs,

apparently trying to distribute them from the flap under her belly. She must have been an early

starter.

Lion Warren

Pictured: A small (very small)

female Mud Crab carrying

hundreds of eggs ready for

distribution. The eggs are the

black patch under her belly

flap. (I am not much good at

“Selfies”).

Tours will once again be a feature of the weekend’s activities. We are still in the process of finalising

tours. When tours are finalised we will put them on our webpage along with the Tour Booking

Forms. Some tours are subject to cancellation due to wet weather, instead of a refund, an alternate

tour will be arranged if it is not possible for these tours to be taken.

The “Food Court” will again operate from the Wednesday night until Sunday night of the Campfire

Weekend with lots of variety available at reasonable prices.

A free shuttle bus will this year be available to ferry people between the showground and town on

Saturday for the Anzac Day morning service.

This year’s entertainment will include Good Corn Liquor, John Battle, Two Gals, Skits, Jazz Club

and others.

Market stalls will once again be set up in the old pavilion while the antique machinery display and

procession will be joined by a group of “heavy horse” enthusiasts who will be demonstrating the

sheer power of the working horses.

Billy boiling competition, caravan display, Sunday church service, Pony club demonstration, bingo,

wood turning demonstration are just a few of the other activities planned for the weekend which

also provides the opportunity to meet up with old friends and make new ones!

We will have industrial bins at the end of each street for Recycling and General Waste.

There is a 9pm curfew on the use of generators and this will be policed. We ask that you consider

your fellow campers.

Dogs must be on a leash at all times and it is your responsibility to clean up after your dog.

Due to OH&S regulations dogs are not allowed in the food court area and you will be asked to

remove it if you bring it in.

Most dog owners do the right thing and we have no problems except for one or two so if you are a

dog owner and see someone doing the wrong thing it is in your interests to make them aware of

their unacceptable behaviour.

Please note information provided is subject to change without notice.

We will post updated information on our webpage.

We look forward to welcoming you to the 2015 Boggabri Drovers’ Campfire Weekend Chairman: Geoff Eather Phone: 0267 434469

DARWIN LIONS BEER CAN REGATTA -Email received and reply

Hello Gwyneth, As President of the Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta, I am writing to offer your members an open invitation to join with the four Lions Clubs (in the greater Darwin Region) in the annual Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta. The next regatta is scheduled for Sunday 12th July 2015, but with an event this large there are always jobs to be done before and after the actual day.

I believe that a number of your members have joined with us in the past, but they’ve only done so by turning up on the day, and not letting us know earlier about their intentions.

The policy that I have recently implemented is that participating clubs are advised of their pro-rata share of the funds raised [based on hours worked as a % of total Lions hours] to include in their WMMR report. So far that has only extended to local clubs, but I would like to see that extended to Lions On OZ, so that your roaming Lions members get due credit for work done, and the DG Council can see a bit ore demonstrable value to the Lions On OZ network.

I have Skype and could join in to one of your future meetings as a guest speaker if you’d want that.

On a personal note, I (along with my wife, Peg) hope to transfer to Lions On OZ in about three years when I can retire. Des Gellert, Convener Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta Inc. PO Box 42099, Casuarina NT 0811

I will forward your email to our members and I am sure that if they are in the area they would greatly enjoy helping the four Lions Clubs in Darwin. I have as a past Bulletin Editor promoted the Beer Can Regatta to our members.

Our Lions Members provide our Lions Club with the hours worked at each monthly meeting and these I do include on the WMMR as Australian Lionsonoz hours worked. We have a separate Activity Report that Specifies assistance to other lions Clubs.

Australian Lionsonoz does not raise money in their own right, we do help other Lions Clubs with their projects. As such we do not have an Activities Account only an Administration Account. I know that when we do our service work with the Communities in which we visit we do so that that Community gains the benefit of our efforts not our Lions Club.

While we appreciate your generosity, we would rather that the moneys raised stay within your Community.

If you would like any further information, I would be happy to assist. Regards

Lion Gwyneth Payne

Food for thought! Grocery List As I was walking Down life's highway

Many years ago

I came upon a Sign that read

Heavens Grocery Store..

When I got a Little closer

The doors swung Open wide

And when I came To myself

I was standing Inside...

I saw a host of Angels.

They were Standing everywhere

One handed me a Basket

And said 'My Child shop with care..'

Everything a Human needed Was in that Grocery

store

And what you Could not carry You could come Back

for more

First I got some Patience.

Love was in that Same row.

Further down was Understanding, You need that

Everywhere you go..

I got a box or Two of Wisdom And Faith a bag Or

two.

And Charity of Course I would need some Of that

too..

I couldn't miss The Holy Ghost It was all over The

place.

And then some Strength And Courage to Help me run

this race.

My basket was Getting full But I remembered I

needed Grace,

And then I chose Salvation for Salvation was for Free

I tried to get Enough of that to do For you and me..

Then I started to The counter To pay my grocery Bill,

For I thought I Had everything To do the Masters Will.

As I went up the Aisle I saw Prayer and Put that in,

For I knew when I Stepped outside I would run into

Sin.

Peace and Joy Were plentiful, The last things On the

shelf.

Song and Praise Were hanging near So I just helped

Myself.

Then I said to The angel Now how much do I owe?'

He smiled and Said

'Just take them Everywhere you go.'

Again I asked 'Really now, How much do I Owe?'

'My child' he Said, 'God paid your bill A long long time

Ago.'

This poem has Been sent to you With love and

Blessings.

Have A Great Day

WHERE IS IT? Submitted by Lion Warren (answer is found somewhere in the Bulletin)

DOGS ARE WELCOME

A man wrote a letter to a small hotel in an outback town which he planned to visit on his

vacation.

He wrote “I would very much like to bring my dog with me. He is well groomed and very well behaved. Would you be willing to permit me to keep him in my room with me at night?" An immediate reply came from the hotel owner, who wrote: "I've been operating this hotel for many years. In all that time, I've never had a dog steal towels,

bed clothes, silverware or steal pictures off the walls or use them as a colouring book. I've never

had to evict a dog in the middle of the night for being drunk and disorderly. And I've never had a

dog run out on a hotel bill. Yes, indeed, your dog is welcome at my hotel. And, if your dog will

vouch for you, you're welcome to stay here too."
