2018 YEAR OF COURAGE - LEADING WITH COURAGE

ST RITA’S COLLEGE

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As the 2019 school year draws to a close, we reflect on the year that has been and give thanks for all the successes we have enjoyed and learn from the failures that we may have experienced. You might recall that in the first Verbis of this year I wrote to you about what our College theme was going to be. It was framed in the context of a quote that came from one of the Old Testament prophets, Micah, when he posed to the

people of the time what God wanted of them. He wrote:

“To act justly, to love with mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8)

Now at year’s end we can look back to consider how we have risen to the challenge of making for a more just world. It is about looking at what we have done, or are doing, about justice issues within our own spheres of influence. God’s challenge to us today is the same as it was for the people of Micah’s time. Micah challenged unjust rulers and defended the rights of the poor against the rich and powerful. His prophecies of the coming of the Messiah foretold of the One who would come to champion the poor and disenfranchised and, in fact, would be born to humble beginnings. Jesus’ life was a model for how we are meant to walk humbly with our God and stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters. The urgings of our God, through the examples of this prophet and Jesus, is as relevant today as it has ever been. As God’s people we are always being called to Identify where injustices exist within our own communities and look for ways to right them.

The challenge our God has for us in this area is a serious one but in our busy lives it can be too easy to dismiss. As Father Ronald Rolheiser writes:

There is a common tendency to think that the practice of justice, especially social justice, is an optional part of being a Christian, something mandated by political correctness rather than by the gospels. Generally, we don't see the call to actively reach out to the poor as something from which we cannot exempt ourselves. But we are wrong in this. In the gospels and in the Christian scriptures in general, the call to reach out to the poor and to help create justice in the world is as non-negotiable as keeping the commandments and going to church. Indeed, striving for justice must be part of all authentic worship.

In the special season of Christmas that approaches, we see once again the special emphasis our religion gives to the simplicity of the poor. The Saviour is presented to us in the pureness and simplicity of the stable where people from all walks of life may come, laying aside their differences and basking in the love we have as humans to share. May the true message of the Gospel touch us all and compel us to Christian action - action which promotes love and care for all those in our community. I offer to you and yours all the blessings of a holy Christmas.

God Bless

Semester 2 Academic Transcripts Semester 2 Academic Transcripts will be available in MySRC for parents to download on Friday 6 December and print if they wish. They will remain in the student’s MySRC profile until they leave the College. Parents and students will be able to see more detailed information regarding assessment tasks in MySRC.

QCS ResultsOur Year 12 students have received their QCS results. We are very proud of the hard work they put into preparing for this test since July last year. Students attended extra tutorials and workshops afterschool since February and their hard work has certainly been rewarded in their results. 2020 TimetablesStudents will receive their timetables for 2020 when they return to school in January. Please note that it is not possible to request specific teachers. The timetable is created based on student subject choices and balance of class sizes and it is not possible to meet such requests.

Study Skills in 2020Ms Amanda Wallas has been appointed Head of Program – Study Skills and will commence in this new role in 2020. Amanda will be working with staff and students to equip students with effective study skills. In preparation for this new role, staff, students and parents will be sent a survey this week to seek their feedback on ways we can support students in their academic learning, with a vision to further improve student outcomes. I strongly encourage you to participate in the survey.

I hope that all students, staff and their families have a restful break and return safe to St Rita’s in the new year. May the Lord bless you and your family this Christmas.

ST RITA’S COLLEGE

Merry ChristmasAt our Christmas Liturgy on Friday, the College community will reflect upon how Christmas is celebrated around the world. Mrs Rana Abdo will share her memories of Christmas in Syria. This Term, Rana has been working as a teacher aide as part of Multicultural Australia’s Work and Welcome Program. This program offers short term placements for migrants and refugees in order to provide experience in an Australian workplace. The program is funded through the contributions of College staff via payroll deduction each fortnight. We take this opportunity to thank Rana for her contribution to the College during her time with us. In extending my best wishes to you and your family this Christmas, I would like to leave you with the prayer that will conclude our liturgy tomorrow:

Jesus, the Light of the World, as we celebrate your birth, may we begin to see the world in the light of understanding you give us. As you chose the lowly, the outcasts, and the poor to receive the greatest news the world had ever known, so may we worship you in meekness of heart. May we also remember our brothers and sisters less fortunate than ourselves in this season of giving. May we always strive to live justly. Amen.

Christmas Collection As part of our Christmas charitable giving projects this year, each House is supporting a special cause. Kildare House is preparing hampers for families at St Joseph’s Murgon and Cascian House is collecting donations for the Ecumenical Coffee Brigade. All other Houses are invited to contribute to the following causes:

• Contributions to the St Vincent de Paul Christmas hampers (Our Lady Help of Christians Parish Hendra and St Agatha’s Parish Clayfield)

• Cash/coin donation to the Salvation Army in support of those affected by drought and bushfires (at the request of a group of Year 10 students)

Donations to the hampers can be placed in the boxes (one per House) in Student Services. Cash/coin donations for the Salvation Army will be collected in House Assembly on Friday 29 November. All of these donations – for Vinnies, the Salvos, St Joseph’s and the ECB – will be presented during our Christmas Liturgy on Friday 29 November. We sincerely thank you for your generosity and support.

St Vincent de Paul Christmas Hampers: The hampers support people in the local area who are in need. Items required include: Non-perishable food items; biscuits and Christmas cakes; toiletries. Please note: no gifts or alcohol.

• Tinned fruit and vegetables, spaghetti, baked beans • Noodles, pasta, rice, sauces• Biscuits (sweet and savoury)• Christmas goodies: lollies, puddings, Christmas cakes• Soft drink, juice, long life milk, cordial• Chips, muesli bars, cereal• Tea, coffee, milo• Spreads: jam, Vegemite, peanut paste, Nutella• Toiletries (especially toiletries that are already gift wrapped)

Salvation Army Bushfire Appeal: Salvation Army Emergency Services (SAES) teams are responding to devastating bushfires in New South Wales and Queensland as an unprecedented number of emergency-level fires cause tragic loss of life and property. Salvation Army teams have been activated at multiple locations, with a number of teams on standby ready to activate should they be required at other evacuation centres. Cash donations assist the Salvation Army to deliver crucial support right when it's needed, and that they can stay as long as it takes to help local communities make a full recovery.

Thank YouOur sincere thanks are extended to the many, many parents and family members that have volunteered their time during 2019 to assist the College with a large number of projects. From Parents & Friends, Sports Subcommittee and Music Support Group functions and fundraising exercises, to our very large Carnival, Orientation Day, Careers Day, and volunteering in the Pantry, the Boutique, at sports and music events. Your invaluable assistance has been warmly received and your willingness to support the College in the education it provides to your daughters is held in high regard. Parents have also given of their time to sit on committees, to complete Surveys, attend to CareMonkey notifications and so much more in helping the College to administrate the work it does. We thank you for your time.

Businesses too have helped the College enormously during the year – from sponsorship to Carnival, Rita’s Longest Lunch and Race Day through to product and prize donations, educational partnerships, providing work experience opportunities for the girls and more. Our grateful thanks come to every business the College has had the pleasure to work with and promote during 2019.

Thank you also to each and every donor to the College’s Giving Day in October. Our venture into charitable fundraising specifically for the College was met with fabulous success and continues to be talked about by the parents and students.

We hope our valued relationships with our parents and the business sector will continue to flourish in 2020. Please be assured that your support has been instrumental in allowing the College to advance the educational development for the girls of the College.

Rostrum Voice of Youth 2020Rostrum Voice of Youth witnesses thousands of students a year greatly improve their verbal communication skills through entering the competition and receiving constructive feedback. Entering Rostrum Voice of Youth is a tangible way to encourage young people to have confident communication skills. More information, including the rules, topics, basis of adjudication, etc. is available from Rostrum ‘Voice of Youth’ website here. During the first two weeks of Term 1, 2020, a meeting will be held for interested students.

Speech and Communication enrolments for 2020 are now open for students from Year 7 to Year 12. Places are available for students to attend either private, semi-private (2 students) or small group lessons (4 students). Places for new students in our dedicated Year 7 Communication Savvy for Senior School classes are now also open.

Please email Speech and Communication Teacher, Ms Hannah Jones at [email protected] to place your name on the list or to find out more. Classes are 45-minutes and held on a rotational timetable at St Rita’s College.Speech and Communication Tuition is a life skills base, contemporary elocution and public speaking program, designed to empower students through the art of effective communication and conversation.

Our strength is eliminating the fear of public speaking and presenting, as well as teaching students how to think on their feet, speak up and speak out.

We thrive on creative thinking and innovative ideas and see the immense value of offering a program to students, which will help them in their schooling years and beyond.

Whether you are an avid presenter wanting to further develop your voice and gain exposure to more performance and presentation opportunities, or need support to build public speaking confidence (especially for school oral presentations), the Speech and Communication Program has something to offer every individual student.

Additionally, students can enrol into AMEB Voice and Communication exams (through to CVCA Certificate Level) and Eisteddfod poetry and public speaking competitions.

A fortnight ago, Rosa and Nagle House families dusted off their Thermomixes and KitchenAids to make, bake and create cakes in a huge effort to raise funds, supporting those affected by CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome). CRPS is a chronic pain condition caused by a malfunction of the central nervous system, resulting in prolonged, excruciating pain, which, according to the McGill Pain Index, is worse than childbirth or amputation.

From Women’s Weekly wonders to Taste.com treats, the Undercroft was awash in a sea of orange – a banquet of baked delicious and delectable delights that were on offer at the Rosa and Nagle Bake Sale. In support of girls and their families who are affected by CRPS, Rosa and Nagle united, working better than any MKR team to raise funds for CRPS Network Australia.

Over $800 was raised, with many a Rita’s girl snagging a sugar spiked sweet. Plenty of teachers also braved the crowd, navigating the brown and white swarm.

A massive thank you goes out to all the families who passed the Mystery Box challenge to bake “orange coloured goods” for the sale; to Mrs Holden and Mrs White for organising the event; and most importantly, to all those who helped raise money for CRPS. It was a wonderful day filled with more happiness and orange than Ed Sheeran and Prince Harry combined.
