Greetings from Spiritual Care

The holiday season is fast approaching. And with it comes all sorts of emotions and attitudes. Some of us look forward to the holidays with anticipation and excitement; others of us dread that they are arriving and can’t wait for January 2nd to arrive on the calendar. Listed below are some ideas and suggestions that others have found helpful in coping with the holiday season. Choose the ones that help you.

• Family get-togethers may be difficult. Be honest with each other about your feelings. Don’t set expectations too high for yourself or for the day. Do things a little differently. What you chose to do in years past, you don’t have to do this year. Undertake only what each family member can handle comfortably. Initiate activity yourself; do not wait for others.

• There is no right or wrong way to handle the day. Some may wish to follow family traditions, while others may choose to change.

• Set limitations. Realize that it isn’t going to be easy. Do the things that are very special and /or important to you. Do the best you can.

• Once you have made the decision on the role you and your family will play during the holidays, let your relatives and friends know. Time spent by yourself can also be rewarding.

• Emotionally, physically and psychologically, the holidays are draining. You need every bit of strength. Try to get enough rest and exercise. Be aware of the increased accessibility of sugar, caffeine, and alcohol during the holidays and guard against overuse of these substances. I know the ladies in the Wellness Center would be happy to work with you on a plan of attack for staying healthy during the holiday season!

One thing that can help, if the holiday seasons are difficult for you, is to tell yourself that they are just another day. Another thing that is important to remember, is that you may not, be in good enough emotional shape to be able to do all the above activities. That’s all right. You can only do what you can do. Know what your limits are. You will find that you will survive the holidays and may even thrive in them this year. Know too, that my door is always open to conversation or to listen. Blessings and God’s Peace to you all this season.

~Chaplain Jennifer

No other concerns shared. Kenyon Place: Dining room service has been slow. The center sidewalk needs repair. Beautiful fall foliage was noted. The men’s restroom soap dispenser needs attention. Kenyon Place gutters have been overflowing. Simpson Health Center: No report. Gardens: No report. conference in New Orleans. A waffle breakfast will be held this week. Other upcoming events include a volunteer appreciation, donor reception and a holiday concert. Mel Smith: Concrete repairs across campus have been assessed with Jensens. Work to repair these will be scheduled. Mel read a letter indicating his plans to resign effective December 1. Rollie Peterson: Kenyon Place and River Ridge neighborhood meetings are scheduled this week. A retirement party for JoAnn Hunter, beautician, will be held on October 16 at 1:30 p.m. No response from the Des Moines Register has been received; however, residents at Town Hall indicated they are receiving papers. Sunday delivery may yet be a concern, however. Julie Thorson: Julie thanked LuVerne Dass for his remarks at the Alzheimer’s Walk and stated that Mel Smith will be missed. Brett Asay is absent today due to some work he is doing with some Health Center issues. Julie shared some thoughts about her son playing on the football team. The Unity Point medical director is the expected speaker for the October Town Hall. The meeting was adjourned and closed with prayerful thoughts and a reading.

Respectfully submitted, Rollie Peterson

Town Hall October 9, 2017

Glen Thompson called the meeting to order and Rev. Jennifer offered the opening prayer. Program: Jennifer Crimmins, UnityPoint introduced herself and Dr. Roderic Gottula, Hospice Medical Director for UnityPoint. Dr. Gottula shared the major criteria as well as some of the myths of hospice. In summary, he stated hospice is not a place. It is not expensive. Medicare pays for hospice. It costs the patient nothing. Hospice care allows you to make decisions about your treatment. There is not a limited amount of time you receive hospice care. Some of the hospice indicators are: increased pain, repeat emergency department visits, recurrent infections, frequent falls, increased dependence with ADLs, significant weight loss. Friendship Haven Service Club: LaVerne Dass presented a check in the amount of $500 to the Friendship Haven Good Samaritan Fund from the Service Club. Denise Halverson accepted the check on behalf of the Foundation. She expressed her gratitude for this contribution and for the many volunteer hours and projects that help fund the Good Samaritan Fund. Staff Reports:

to change. Doug’s Corner…

“UnLOCKINg the Power of Philanthropy Share Your Heart by Sharing Your Stories!

It is a great time of year to break from articles that involve the strategies, the tools, the techniques, or the benefits of charitable giving. I have a favor to ask each of you . . . more about that later. Frances brought a very business-like approach to her charitable giving. She turned highly taxable property into a very nice, low-taxed stream of income for herself and her family. And she helped hospital patients and children with disabilities at the same time. Helen wrote modest checks to her favorite charities almost every day of the week. She gave away half of her annual income in retirement. Reading and responding to appeals from “her charities” was her primary retirement activity. Her heart swelled as she talked about feeding children on a Native American reservation or about helping a young woman attend nursing school (as someone had done for Helen so many years earlier.) These are two of my favorite (very true) stories from my 30 years in this business I call “gift planning.” Now for the favor I ask of you . . . Will you write, and send to me, a few sentences about your motivations for charitable giving and perhaps a story of blessing that you have made possible or experienced? I would like to, in turn, share your story with all the readers of this column. If you wish for me to print your thoughts anonymously, I will happily do that. What a great December issue that could be. Please pass along your story one of several ways:

• Enclose in a sealed envelope and leave it with Denise Halverson, Torri Werner, or Sue Blanchet at Friendship Haven. Simply write “To Doug Lockin . . . My Story” on the outside.

• Email me your story at [email protected] • Call me at 515.210.6603. Tell me your story, and I’ll write it down. (This might

be the most fun way of all!) I promise that your story will encourage and uplift many others . . . please let us hear from you. Holiday Blessings,

Doug Lockin, 515.210.6603 or [email protected]

“Great Decisions” The following individuals have made a great decision by making a move to Friendship Haven during the past month. Please join me in extending a warm welcome to them. Robert (Bob) Smith has made his new home in River Ridge. Bob was born in Chicago, Illinois and spent his childhood there. He attended college in Grinnell before enlisting to serve in WWII. Upon return from the service he began several years of working in the automobile industry with family members in Illinois and California. He eventually landed in Omaha, Nebraska, with his wife, Lois, where he worked as a sales representative for Texas Gulf Chemicals. Good-Bye It is with excitement and also some reluctance that I tell you that after 20 years of working at Friendship Haven I have decided to resign my position as Vice President of Campus Support Services. With all the projects completed and with a mutual agreement with Julie I have decided that my last day here will be Dec. 1. I have supervised some great people over my years – my supervisors of Mary Jean, Annette, and Bill have been with me for a long time. A lot of the staff that I supervise have also been with me the entire time I have been here. I want to thank the executive team and Sue for all the work we did together – you are a great bunch. I have made a lot of friends over the years with the staff, but also with a lot of the residents – some I will remember very fondly. Some of my decisions I made over the years were not always agreed with but I always tried to do what I thought was best. I have had many proud moments here with all of the construction projects and when I drive by in the future it will remind me of those moments. Friendship Haven is nothing like it was when I first started and I hope to be remembered as the guy that built the buildings – not the one that tore them down. One of my favorite things I have done is the design of the monument sign on the corner of our property – I look at it every morning with pride as I come to work. The other thing was to get Father Jim to move here on campus - it has worked out great for Friendship Haven. It will not be easy to leave this place but hope I will always be welcome to return and say hi and walk down the hall proudly and know that I played a part in making Friendship Haven what it is today.
