Sept. 2, 9 & 16, 2020 The start of school and fall activities can be stressful under normal circumstances, let alone during a pandemic. To help en- gage parents and children in open communication and support them through this transition, the North Dakota Department of Human Services’ Behavioral Health Divi- sion has created a new toolkit for parents called Parenting During a Pandemic. The new Parents Lead resource touches on a variety of topics, including how to support children going back to school, whether they are going in-person a few days a week or participating in full-time distance learning, balancing tele- working with children at home, supporting a child when they are grieving the loss of activities, knowing when a child is ready to stay home alone, age-specific ideas on supporting children impacted by COVID-19 and more. The new resource can be found online at www.parentslead.org/COVID-19. “Parents are making difficult decisions relating to child care, education and managing careers,” said Behavioral Health Division Director Pamela Sagness. “Caring for young children while assist- ing with distance learning for older children and working full time, often from home is difficult. Any support or resources we can offer to North Dakota families is important.” The Behavioral Health Divi- sion continues to develop new resources not only for parents, but also for community members and professionals. Individuals are encouraged to check the Parents Lead website regularly for new re- sources, links to helpful informa- tion and for updates on supporting families during these times. The primary goal of Parents Lead is to provide parents and caregivers with tools and resourc- es to support them in promoting the behavioral health and well- being of their children. Interested individuals can also follow Parents Lead on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. The department’s Behavioral Health Division is responsible for reviewing and identifying service needs and activities in the state’s behavioral health system to ensure health and safety, access to services and quality services. It also establishes quality assur- ance standards for the licensure of substance use disorder program services and facilities and provides policy leadership in partnership with public and private entities. Farmers and Ranchers Should Apply for CFAP Support Only 63% of North Dakota farmers and ranchers have taken advantage of the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) so far, and a North Dakota State University Extension agricultural economist encourages more to apply. “This U.S. Department of Agriculture program supports any farmer or rancher whose operation has been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic,” says Ron Haugen, NDSU Extension farm management specialist. “The CFAP provides direct relief to pro- ducers who faced price declines and additional marketing costs due to COVID-19 -- and that’s nearly all North Dakota produc- ers.” Recently, the application dead- line was extended to Sept. 11, and the commodities included was expanded. Contact your local Farm Service Agency (FSA) office to apply or apply online. “It is very easy to apply online,” Haugen says. “A calculator (an Excel spreadsheet) is provided at https://www.farmers.gov/cfap to enter your numbers. The informa- tion you need is your commodity sales quantities, sales dates and inventory. The calculator will do the rest. It automatically puts the information into the proper FSA form, which can be printed or scanned and sent to your local FSA office. Payment is usually received within two weeks.” Haugen says this program offers payments to crop and livestock producers. Most of North Dakota’s livestock producers have faced additional costs in marketing their inventories due to unexpected sur- plus and disrupted markets. How- ever, some livestock producers may not have as much experience dealing with FSA as crop produc- ers. He encourages them to apply because it is a simple process for the inexperienced producer. In addition to livestock, tradi- tional (nonspecialty) and specialty crops, wool, dairy, nursery crops, aquaculture and eggs are included in the program. For a full list of eligible commodities and program guidelines, visit https://www. farmers.gov/cfap. “These payments are a good addition to your cashflow in these tight economic times,” Haugen says.
