East Street Arts – 130 Vicar Lane, LeedsArts & Cultural Hub
In collaboration with East Street Arts and local partners, Hammerson has transformed a previously derelict building in the heart of Leeds into a unique temporary arts and cultural hub. The new artwork on the building façade was selected through a competition of local artists.
Through its programme of workshops and exhibitions, 130 Vicar Lane provides a range of initiatives and training opportunities to up-skill Leeds residents, encouraging them to make, create and exhibit their work. Since taking up occupancy at the hub, Leeds Print Workshop has flourished into a vibrant, sustainable printmaking community, supporting local people in printmaking.
Nicola Greenan, East Street Arts External Relations Director, said: “Working with Hammerson has enabled East Street Arts to bring 130 Vicar Lane to life, and provide a much-needed space for creative practitioners within the heart of the city”.
At Hammerson, sustainability underpins everything we do. Our vision is to create retail destinations that deliver positive impacts economically, socially and environmentally. Positive Places is our strategy for making that happen and is based on a set of five commitments, each with their own targets:
To Challenge and Innovate Challenging the status quo and trialling new approaches and solutions to support the transition to a net positive business.
To Serve and InvestDelivering social value to the communities we serve, measured in net positive jobs, skills, civic pride and investment.
To Protect and EnhanceProtecting and enhancing our natural environment by minimising resource consumption and delivering restorative projects to deliver a net positive environmental impact.
To Partner and CollaborateTaking a stakeholder-led approach to create collaborative projects that deliver net positive outcomes.
To Upskill and InspireInvesting in our people, as well as recognising and rewarding those who bring change that delivers on our Positive Places vision.
In 2017 we extended our strategy and announced our ambition to be Net Positive in carbon, water, resource use and socio-economic impacts by 2030.

“The Neom Organics store in Victoria Leeds was our first store
outside of London and the first within a new shopping centre development.
Hammerson provided support and advice throughout the project and,
working closely with them, we opened in record time. We look forward to
working with Hammerson again in the future.”
