Quick Facts

Hanyang University

Hanyang University is the successor of DongA Polytechnic Institute, which was established in 1939, as the

first engineering college in Korea. In 1959, the Institute became more comprehensive and was upgraded to

university status. Today, Hanyang is home to about 37,000 students in 22 colleges and 16 graduate schools.

To continue its momentum of progress, Hanyang University has been striving to promote

internationalization and consequently, 1,000 courses instructed in English per semester by 150 foreign

professors are now available. Also, through the Hanyang International Summer School (HISS), which offers

more than 45 courses taught in English from distinguished educators, the University hosts more than

700 students from around the world. Efforts such as these have allowed Hanyang to recruit about 4,000

international students, and the University also has formal relations with over 480 universities worldwide.

Testimonials

Coming to Hanyang University as an exchange student was one of the best decisions in my life. I remember my family and friends asking me, “Are you crazy? What are you going to do there?” Well, I have lived here for almost a year. I fell in love with the city of Seoul, where you can never be bored and where you can get anything you can think of 24/7. I will miss the high-tech buildings next to the beautiful Buddhist Temples, the late night shopping, the classic music in clean public restrooms, the Internet connection everywhere, the subways and surrounding mountains, and many more things. And it is unbelievably safe! I remember one of my friends asking me so why I am so happy here? I had many responses because of the school and many trips, adventures, and parties we did but now thinking about it, I would say that the main reason is the people and social connections I have built here, with my Korean friends, and people from all around the world, and even with my teachers. Korea is such a good place to know, understand and learn from. I 100% recommend it!

Mirka Fojtu

I came from California and was given the very fortunate opportunity to come study abroad at Hanyang. This being my first time to ever be away from home, I was not sure what to expect. However the campus was so beautiful and the coordinators so helpful and friendly, I almost immediately felt like I found a new home here. Life at Hanyang has been so amazing, I only have good things to say about my professors I can truly say that they care about you and want you to learn. Hanyang is also located nearby many wonderful places to hang out and eat, and if you want to go somewhere far, public transportation is a breeze. One of my favorite things about being here is learning more about Korean culture. I love it here at Hanyang! I know that I will only have great memories of my stay here and hopefully many other people will also.

Cherish Ignacio

I feel this is a sentiment shared with all of my peers however at the risk of sounding clich 3 - I love Hanyang and Korea! Everyone here is incredibly tolerant, kind and supportive. If you are lost they will help you without you even asking, if you drop your wallet they will tap you on the shoulder and give it to you, if you are walking down the street they’ll sometimes even stop you just to have a friendly chat. This society is friendly. They are curious to learn from you yet happy to share their culture. I have traveled the world and lived in many other countries and I have to say that I enjoy it just as much as living in Australia (which is where I’m from). AND sorry, can’t rave enough about this place - EVERYTHING IS CHEAP!? WHAT?! It’s a developed nation but you can get a huge, really nutritious tasty meal for 2-3 dollars US. In conclusion if you have any reluctancesin coming to Korea forget them all. Move over Disneyland you just lost your title of “the happiest place on earth” to South Korea!

Doing an exchange student program has been one of my dreams since I was a child, and it became true for me. Joining this exchange program was one of the best things that happened in my life. This program gave me benefits and many good experiences. Currently, I am doing my exchange program at Hanyang University. It is a new life experience for me because Korea has a different culture and lifestyle compared to my country.Living in Seoul is awesome! I am impressed with Korean people’s lifestyle. Their hospitality, discipline, and kindness make me love this beautiful and well-managed city. Meeting people from other countries and making friends with them is one of the happiest moments for me. I like to meet new people, make new friends, and share my stories with them. It is a great experience when I can share my opinions and also see different points of views. The exchange program at Hanyang University gave me the greatest experiences ever. I am glad to be a part of the Hanyang exchange program. I love being here, I love the people I’ve met, and I will not forget it. Thank you Hanyang!

Hanyang University has 2 types of housing. The dormitory, located on campus, and off-campus housing located right next to one of the campus gates. Both housings are on a walking distance away from the classrooms. In and around the housings there are general facilities like an ATM, a convenience store and a gym. Most rooms are shared with one roommate. However, there are also a limited number of single rooms available. Two students share a room that is equipped with the latest amenities. The Office of International Cooperation requires a dormitory deposit of 50 US$. When exchange students exit the dormitory room, they should apply for a dormitory deposit refund. Any damages to the dormitory facilities will be deducted from the deposit. Otherwise, the deposit will be fully refunded.

To study in Korea, a student visa (D-2) must be obtained from the Korean Embassy or consulate abroad. In the case of short-term visits (less than 90 days) a short-term visa may be obtained, but it cannot be extended in Korea. In order to acquire a student visa (D-2), students must submit to the embassy the Certificate of Admission issued by Hanyang University. The application procedure may vary according to different embassies or consulates, so the Korean embassy or consulate in a student’s home country should first be checked to determine what documents are required.International students must be insured. International students are strongly encouraged to have health insurance before coming to Korea. When students visit a hospital in Korea, they must pay all fees and should keep receipts and prescriptions for reimbursement by their health insurance companies when back in their own country. If on medication, students are recommended to bring an adequate supply and/or a doctor’s prescription. For students without health insurance, you can apply for Korean health insurance, during the online application. The payment will be arranged when arriving in Korea.

Please plan to arrive in Korea at least one week before classes begin so that you can attend the Orientation for Exchange Students. The Office of International Cooperation can arrange a pick-up service upon request. For this service, each Hanyang University Coordinator will collect necessary information regarding the arrival. Please be aware that students are required to pay for the pick-up service. The fee will be 70000 KRW. (approximately US$ 65)
