In the course of the Is lamizat ion of India since the2nd.8th century t many Islamic col leges have beenfounded there. The history of these colleges and theiract iv i t ies are not yet known2. Their glor ious past istestified by an immense number of manuscripts inArabic, Persian and Urdu, many of which can betraced back to the t ime of the great moghuls; they werecopied in the early 1l , l7th century, but also in thel l l S t h a n d l 3 l 9 t h c e n t u r i e s .

From these manuscripts only a small portion hasbeen described in catalogues. Even the number ofIndian l ibrar ies with manuscript col lect ions is st i11unclear: the enumerat ion of Is lamic manuscript l i -brar ies in the survevs of A. J. W. Ht- lsrt . , rr 3 and Fu,rrSEzctNa is not at al l complete. E'"en the comprehensiveHandbook o.f Librurie.s. Art'hive.s und Infnrrnation C'en-tres in India which was published in 1984-5 in NewDelhi5 gives in a chapter about ' Is lamic Studies Li-brar ies in India'6 an incomplete and part ial ly correc-table picture. Therefore we must collect informationabout manuscript libraries in India from differentsources and correct and supplement them by directinquiries in situ.

I f we do not take into considerat ion the probablygood-sized number of pr ivate manuscript l ibrar ies'wecan add, according to the already mentioned Handhookof Librctr ies 8 35 l ibrar ies to the l ist of F. Sezclt ' , ' I Andeven this list can be completed by the chapter 'Modern

Rel igious, Cultural and Educat ional Centres of Mus-lims' in AeuL Hnsex Ar-t Neowt's book Muslínts inIndiulo. Apparently there are stil l many manuscriptcol lect ions which are not yet known.

My tr ip to India from 20th December 1984 t i l l 30thJanuary 1985 has conf irmed this impression. In thefol lowing the reader wi l l f ind some obsenat ions onIslamic manuscript col lect ions; they do not pretend tobe exhaustive. I shall give some information aboutheretofore unknown collections, new catalogues andlists, and facts. These are the result of my visit to theIndian towns Aligarh, Delhi, Hyderabad (Deccan),Jaipur, Lucknow, Rampur and Tonk.

L Aligarh

The Muslim University Library in Aligarh, knownas Maulana Azad Library, owns about 14,000 Ara-bic and Persian manuscripts. The oldest part of this

fu Hans Daibercollection originally belonged to Sir Sayed AhmadKhan who founded the Universi ty in 1877. His col lec-tion has been enlarged by the 'Lytton Collection'which is today cal led the 'Universi ty Col lect ion' . Be-sides this collection there are eleven other big col-lect ions which were donated": 1) the Abdu' l HayyCol lect ion; 2) the Abdu's Salárn Col lect ion; 3) theÀftab Col lect ion: 4) the Ahsan Col lect ion; 5) theHabibganj Col lect ion; 6) the Jau'ahar Museum; 7) theMunrr Álam Col lect ion; 8) the Qutbu'd Din Col lec-t ion: 9) the Shif tá Col lect ion: 10) the Subhàn Al láhCol lec t ion : 11) the Su laymán Co l lec t ion .

Among these only the Shiftá Collection and theAhsan Col lect ion have been described in cataloguesl2.Both col lect ions contain besides Persian mss.. whichhave the upper hand, respectively 82 and 79 Arabicmss. They deal with tradi t ional Is larnic f ie lds l ikeKoran, tafsïr, hadr1, prayers, ./iqlt. mystics. theology,grammar, metr ics and eschatology. but also logic, dia-lect ics and scienceslr . The l ists do not contain newand important t i t les. - The greatest col lect ion is theHabibganj Collection with 2000 mostly Persian manu-scripts. So far only the Persian poetical texts have beendescribedla. The Arabic mss. of this as wel l as theother col lect ions are registered in a handwri t ten l ist : aselect ion containing mainly texts on the history ofsciences can be found in a handwritten list of 17pages ts .

Here we shall present some selected texts mainlyfrom the field of Islamic philosophy and Graeco-Arabica. They are mentioned in the handwritten cata-logue of the University Collection (pp. l6-23) and areincluded only partially in the above-mentioned shortlist or have been insufficientlv identified:

Both texts differ from the known Prohlemata text which. inGreek. is ascribed to Aristotle and which has been translatedinto Arabic from a more complete Greek version (by IsháqIbn Hunain; see the unique ms. Manisa (Turkey) 1790) andpartially from Arabic into Hebrew. An edition of bothversions is being prepared by L. Filius (project AristotelesSemitico-Latinus).

I I . Delhi

According to F.SEzcrN3e there are in Delhi andNew Delhi two public libraries with Arabic mss.,namely the Institute of History of Medicine and theNaziriya Public Library. This statement requires somecorrection. The collections mentioned by Sezgin arenow stored in the Indian Inst i tute of Is lamic Studies(New Delhi , Tughlakabad). 2. Nat ional Museum

It is scarcely known that this Museum has a collec-tion of several thousand mss. in Persian, Arabic, Urduand Hindi. Some of the Arabic (and perhaps Persian)mss. may have come from the collection of NawwábMuhammad Waztr Khan Bahádur. the second ruler ofTonk (1834-1864); they were acquired by the Govern-ment of India and transferred to the National Museumin 195244.

All manuscripts are registered in a handwritten listcomprising 10 volumes. The number of Arabic mss. isnot known. The first 6 volumes each contain 1000-1500 Arabic and, more especial ly, Persian mss.; there-fore the total number of Arabic texts will scarcely bemore than 3000. They mainly deal with theology andmystics, but also with history and less often with nat-

3. National Archives

It is little known to scholars that here too mss. arepreserved, partially on microfilms of mss. in otherlibraries (e.g. Rampur). A handwritten list gives someinformation about the Arabic original mss. (approxi-mately 100). These mss. are said to have mainly comefrom the former Tipu Sultan library in Mysore whichwas dissolved in the early l9th centurys3. Most of itsmss., which were described by Csnnr-rs Srewenr in

1809 s1 had been transferred to the Royal AsiaticSociety of Bengal (now in the National Library,Calcutta) and to the India Office Library in London.They reappear in their catalogues in more convenientdescriptions. However, these catalogues ss and thehandwritten list of the National Archives do notinclude three mss. which are mentioned in the oldcatalogue of Srewanr and which seem to have con-tained important texts concerning Graeco-Arabica andPhi losophicas6. Apparent ly they are lost.

I I I . Hyderabad (Deccan)

Hyderabad has at least seven libraries which possessArabic (and Persian) mss. In the first place we shouldmention the Andhra Pradesh Government OrientalManuscripts Library and Research Institute, subse-quently the Sayeedia Library. the Salar Jang Museum,the Osmania University Library, the Urdu Academy,the Óámi'a Nizámrya and the State ArchaeologicalMuseum. The collections of the Urdu Academy andthe State Archaeological Museum are described incataloguesst and.are excluded in our survey. as is thecol lect ion of the Gàmi'a Nizámi1-a ( founded 1875) with2000mss. of which onlv a feu are descnbedss.

This manuscript library is mentionecl in the Huul-book oí ' Librar ies5e as 'State Central Library' . 'a l id butshould be consulted since we have no other catalogue.However. many texts are insufÍiciently described inthem. A preliminary typewritten list (Caralogue ofArobic Munuscripts; 245 pp.) of the in total 6000Arabic Mss. is also not of much use: singular items incollections of texts (maÈmu'at) are rarely mentionedseparately. The Sayeedia (: Sa'idfya) Library in Hyderabad isa private collection of 3141 Persian and, mainly,Arabic mss. Until now only 700 Arabic mss. aboutKoran, tafsír, hadt1, síra andfiqh have been describedin a catalogue publ ished in 196881. Three morevolumes had been planned; however, it seems that forthe present we will have to content ourselves with ahandwritten list in the library. This list mentions(p. l8 l , Hikma 36) an old ms. with 140 fol ios whichwas copied in 1060r1650. I t contains pseudo-Aristot le 'sThectlogt'.The ms. is badly damaged by worming. Nevertheless the textwhich has been collated and as a result contains quite a lot ofadditions in the margin may be useful for a critical edition oft h e t e x t 8 s .

The greatest manuscript library in Lucknow is theprivate Kutubhana-i l{cisirta, the Naziriya Librarywhich belongs to a Shi'ite family. manuscripts from the former Public Library of Luck-

now (bui l t l9 l0). Original ly the books had been stored(since 1882) in the Provincial Museum. The printed

books and manuscripts in Arabic and Persian have notyet been sufficiently described. They contain mostly

Persian works on later history, theology and poetry.

We mention here Abdalqàdir Badà'fni's Persian his-

torical work Muntalah at-tan'arífi : Ta'rífi-í Bada'unï(undated, 2 vols.)121; the author came to the court of

Akbar in the course of 981 i1574.

We have now reached the end of our survey of someimportant Indian libraries and their manuscripts. Ourselection of texts concentrates on Graeco-Arabica andimportant philosophica. We have identified and regis-tered some heretofore unknown mss. The reader shouldnot expect to find every library and every ms. ofimportance in this survey. An immense quantity ofmaterial is stil l awaiting an analytical description. Theresearch in Arabic (and Persian) mss. in Indian li-braries can stil l lead to surprising discoveries - also inthose libraries which have comprehensive catalogues.For example, the Oriental Public Library (Hudàba[S)of Patna (: Bankipore), one of the greatest collectionsin India with a detai led cataloguerss, has under thenumber 2641(314Jï.) a collection of texts (copied in theI l/l7th century) which are stil l insufficiently described.Besides numerous philosophical treatises in Persian(e.g. by Bábá Afdal)1s6 we f ind Arabic phi losophicaltexts and Graeco-Arabica 1s t .
