Adam’s Camp 2015 Annual Report

Dear Adam’s Camp family and friends,

We beat Disney!

It was a simple note written by a 9-year-old camper in her spiral notebook, but it meant the world to us at Adam’s Camp. Josie, on her list of “Special Things I’ve Done,” ranked going to Adam’s Camp in Colorado higher than the two times she went to Disney World. Talk about heady stuff! In 2015, Josie’s note was the best evidence that the payoff from the daily grind of preparing, fund-raising, recruiting, marketing, driving up I-70 countless times and surviving the late nights and early mornings of camp is likely more profound than anyone on our team realizes.

For 30 years, Adam’s Camp has passionately aspired to change the lives of children and young people with special needs and their families for the better by helping them realize potentials and develop strengths. The real genius that our founders Karel and Bob Horney brought to Adam’s Camp back in 1986 is recognizing that rather than focusing on “can’t,” tremendously powerful things happen when you focus instead on “can.” This principle still guides Adam’s Camp today.

The year of 2015 was one of transition for Adam’s Camp. Karel stepped away from day-to-day leadership of the organization. As Founder, she serves as our best advisor and ambassador. Our longtime Finance Director (and Adam’s Camp’s first Executive Director) Laura Johnson handed over daily financial management to oversee the management of our scholarship program. We are fortunate that these two leaders, who have been constants with the organization since Day 1, remain active and accessible to share their expertise and experience.

Adam’s Camp also enjoyed measured growth in 2015. We served more summer campers, more children ages 1-4 through our expanded Early Start programs and more young adults with weekend excursions than in 2014. We will expand to offer even more of these opportunities in 2016. Our Outreach sites in Alaska, Nantucket and New Hampshire operated at capacity and we laid the groundwork for more exciting expansion.

While we are proud of what we accomplished in 2015, which was possible because of the financial and volunteer support our community provides, we know our work is never finished and we are confident the best for Adam’s Camp still lies ahead.

Today, Disney. Tomorrow, the world!

With best wishes from the Adam’s Camp team,

Jay ClarkExecutive Director

Adam’s Camp Promise

Successfully completing a new building that will have more than 10,000 usable square feet on the Snow Mountain Ranch campus promises so many great things for Adam’s Camp. It is a promise kept to see the vision through. It is the promise of a bright future for our camps and campers. It only makes sense that the new building be named “Adam’s Camp Promise.”

Promise will provide a full commercial kitchen, a large multi-use area for improved therapy spaces and some desperately needed aditional storage space to better serve our campers and staff.

The YMCA of the Rockies and Adam’s Camp are sharing the fundraising responsibilities for the $2.3 million Adam’s Camp Promise. The project is the result of a capital campaign that was originally scheduled for three years. The campaign, while not complete, was far enough along after two years to break ground and for construction to begin one year earlier than anticipated. Adam’s Camp continues to actively seek new partners to help fulfill its capital commitment.

The YMCA of the Rockies will manage and maintain Adam’s Camp Promise, which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2016.

“Adam’s Camp Promise” should be finished and open in the fall of 2016

The new building expands the Adam’s Camp campus of Adam’s Camp Summit, the gathering space and playground.

Intensive Therapy ProgramsWhen our namesake, 5-year-old Adam, stood and walked by himself for the first time after a period of customized, intensive, one-on-one therapy, a seed was planted that in the 30 years since has blossomed to serve thousands of children with special needs.

Each week-long Adam’s Camp program provides therapies for children with developmental delays often related to autism, cerebral palsy or Down syndrome. Teams focus on each child’s strengths to provide goal-centered, outcome-based treatment. Teams produce a comprehensive digital, clinical report outlining goals, strategies, out-comes and recommendations for each camper that often serves as an annual treatment road map. In 2015, 47

percent of families reported their camper achieved a major milestone at camp. In 2015, Adam’s Camp served:

• 29 campers ages 1 to 4 through our Denver-based Early Start programs.

• 64 campers ages 4 to 8 in our Pathfinder programs.

• 67 campers ages 8 and older in our Trailblazer, Explorer and Pioneer programs.

Sibling and Family ProgramsA cornerstone belief of Adam’s Camp is that when a family has a child with special needs, the entire family has special needs, which we address with support and respite for parents as well as recreation and connection for siblings.

While the child with special needs receives therapy, the siblings participate in their own summer camps that include nature walks, arts, crafts, outdoor activities, games and the chance to explore their feelings about having a sibling with special needs with experts. For several hours a day, five days in a row, parents also have the opportunity to enjoy respite and re-energize in a supportive and caring environment.

In 2015, 423 parents and siblings of therapy campers enjoyed the following opportunities:

• Resource presentations from experts.

• Connections to other families in similar situations.

• Respite from care-giving activities.

• Group activities and discussions.

People are talking: “I would say they definitely need to try Adam’s Camp as it has changed our lives and

we cannot say enough great things about the therapists at Adam’s Camp! They have a special place in

my heart for all they’ve done for our daughter!! We will continue to carve out our schedule year after year

for our daughter (and our family) to make time for annual Adam’s Camp sessions!!”

Adventure and Young Adult ProgramsCamaraderie? Check. Awesome Activities? Check. Learning social and independence skills? Check. Growing life-long friendships? Check. Caregiver respite? Check. When it comes to Adam’s Camp Adventure Camps and Young Adult programs, our campers and their families checked all the right boxes. In 2015:

• 258 Campers, 52 counselors, 105 volunteers and 5 nurses wrung all of the exhilarating fun possible from the activities (swimming, hiking, archery, arts and crafts, rafting, sailing, shopping, picnicking, zip-lining, tubing, dancing, singing, camp-firing and more!) at our Adventure Camps at Snow Mountain Ranch in Granby, CO.

• 86 Campers took part in our fall, winter and spring getaways all across Colorado and the Denver Metro area.

• 256 Parents enjoyed respite from care-giving responsibilities while their campers participated in Adam’s Camp young adult programs.

Volunteers2,832 8-hour work days. Think of that – if you took all the hours that volunteers provided Adam’s Camp in 2015 serving critical functions from helping therapists and counselors to behind-the-scenes office work, it would add up to more than a staggering 22,600 hours, or 2,832 work days. To state it as simply as possible, Adam’s Camp could not operate without our volunteers. In 2015:

• 313 volunteers helped us with our Early Start, Therapy, Adventure and Siblings programs:

• 203 volunteers helped us at our summer programs at Snow Mountain Ranch

• 110 volunteers helped at other programs held outside of the summer months.

• Seven adults, including three with special needs, provid-ed more than 100 volunteer hours in the Adam’s Camp administrative office.

People are talking: “We love how the counselors/staff really encourage the kids to try things that we as

parents have difficulty talking kids into doing. Especially activities that might seem “scary” or “hard.” My

son was worried about the tubing, but after the counselors encouraged him to try, it ended up being his

favorite activity. I’m not sure I would have been successful with that.”

Jared + Haley Rachel Beau

People are talking: “Adam’s Camp is life changing for everyone that is involved. I was inspired by every

single camper that I interacted with and felt moved by their contagious smiles and laughter, determina-

tion even in the toughest of situations, and their empathetic attitudes towards others.”

In 2015:

• 10 Campers took part in Adam’s Camp Alaska

• 10 Campers took part in Adam’s Camp Nantucket

Loyalty CircleIt is a thrill to recognize the Adam’s Camp “Loyalty Circle” of donors who have contributed for 10 or more years in a row. These dedicated givers encirlce and enrich us with their longstanding devotion!

Adam’s Camp Fundraising EventsA critical piece of the annual Adam’s Camp fundraising plan is the three annual special events held in the spring, fall and winter. In addition to providing crucial financial support, these events also provide an opportunity for Adam’s Camp to engage and interact closely with many of our most important contributors. Between these three events, each with its own character and flavor, there is “something for everybody” through sponsorship and participation packages available to supporters. In 2015:

• Approximately 400 volunteers and spectators took part in “Adam’s Camp Hoops for Hope,” a celebri-ty basketball game at Cherry Creek High School on March 8, 2015. The event raised more than $70,000.

• The “Mark Wiebe/Adam’s Camp Golf Classic” hosted 132 golfers from all over the U.S. at the magnificent Colorado Golf Club in Parker on September 28, 2015. Celebrating its 10th year, the event raised more than $190,000, raising its 10-year cumulative total to over $1 Million raised for Adam’s Camp!

• More than 100 supporters honored Adam’s Camp Board Member Dr. Nancy Lataitis of Partners in Pediatrics for years of outstanding service at the annual Adam’s Camp Recognition Dinner on November 22 at Ya Ya’s Euro Bistro. The event raised more than $50,000.
