Minutes of the June Meeting Keith Miller

The Meeting was called to order with the Pledge of Allegiance at 7:02. Board members present were the President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. There were a total of 30 members present.

New Members and Guests: A prior member has returned — welcome back to Tom McCart! Approval of Meeting Minutes: M/S/P to approve the minutes from last month’s meeting. Treasury Report: M/S/P to approve the Treasurer’s Report.

Safe and Sound: No report from the Safety Officer this month. Lee Main, as Contest Director for our representation at the Wings Over Gillespie demonstration, reports that all events were carried out safely.

Old Business: Wings Over Gillespie – Bob Muhleman thanked EVERYONE that participated, regardless of the extent. We may be missing one ball cap, but we made $75 on hat sales and $77 on other sales. The patron raffle for the Super Cub went to Tim Babington, who came all the way back from North Park with his kids to pick up the prize. Lucas (age 8) and Connor (7) were absolutely thrilled! Bob presented certificates of appreciation to many of the club participants which include but not limited to: Ted O’Fallin who was there for the ENTIRE event, and never even took time to go to the bathroom (um, ew). Lance Edmunson was also there all three days. Richard and Ryan Cructhfield handed out flyers, built some planes and assisted in setup and tear-down. Keith and Ben printed out the flyers that were handed out.

Dun Guliher helped with model building. Glen Merritt and Don Madison manned the aircraft display tree and spent a lot of time schmoozing the crowd and talking up the hobby. Tim Peterson flew his hexacopter both days. Lance and Art flew their P-51s. Ron flew a B52 on Saturday and Scott flew his Chipmunk on Sunday. Glen flew his Multiplex Gemini biplane on Sunday. Keith Miller and son Jeramy demonstrated a Gentle Lady glider launch from the top of a Kadet tug. Scott coordinated the two flight simulators which were busy the entire weekend. Bob Muhleman very graciously offered a Raffle Ticket to each of those who participated, and donated the prize: The winner was Glen Merritt who wins an Extra 300 ARF (.60-.90) by Aeroworks. On behalf of the club and as a past club President who’s hosted many of these events, Glenn Merritt thanked Bob for hosting this event. He said that at this event we easily had 100 times more exposure than any of the past 10 events Glen has seen!! Pylon Races—Lance Edmunson – External event coordinators (from another local club) failed to let us know that they have a conflicting club event on the agreed race date of June 25th. So our event will be on Sunday June 26th.

New Business: Runway resurfacing - Ron: Duane Norman contacted a guy who does the Tex Coating – rough estimate is $2000. Goal is to have it done before the full heat of the summer sets in. By this time in the meeting funds grew to over $2200 (check out where the Treasurers report started at the beginning of the meeting! That’s Progress!) So Ron will get it started ASAP. Ron will look also at having the runway extensions coated. We will also need to remember to put an X at both ends of the runway which are required to indicate the

whatever scrap he had. It flies FAST, but is easy to see with that screaming fluorescent orange scheme. Bill Vecera presented his Midwest Pitts Special which he picked up partially completed from a friends grandson. Had to do a LOT of re-work on struts and landing gear. It has an HB .61 for power and uses standard servos. Pin-striping was done with the Monokote stripe cutting tool. Bill used an Airtronics radio with standard servos. Demonstrations: None this month. For the Good of the Order: None this month Story Time: Ben Newkirk shared some snapshots of his recent trip to Europe. Nice! Electric Seminar: No seminars were needed.

runway is closed to full scale aircraft (Did you know that?). Don Madison has a line painter. M/S/P for Ron to move forward with runway resurfacing. M/S/P to move the safety line to 25 feet North of the pilot line (as briefed in last month’s Hangar News). Rule Change— in addition to the movement of the safety line to 25 feet, a motion was passed to accept the rule change as stated last month:

11. Flying should be confined to the area over the middle of the river flood control channel to the North, bounded by the flag/plane marker to the East, entry gate to the west and the northern runway edge to the South. a. Other than landing or taking off, flying is prohibited south of the SAFETY LINE, situated 25 feet from the PILOT LINE. b. All aircraft will yield to aircraft landing and taking off.

The red spectator line will remain. Historically, the line defines the north edge of the pit area, and hence also defines the spectator boundary.

Drawing for Free Membership: Ken Lawrence—PRESENT and WINS! (That’s two months in a row!)

WINNER! WINNER!WINNER! WINNER! Model Sharing: Ken Lawrence shared his Balsa USA 1913 Taube 90 kit. It’s semi-scale (doesn’t have the scale under camber or control surfaces). It’s powered by an OS 65 LA and controlled with an Airtronics RDS8000 2.4GHz, weighing in at 8.5 lbs. It’s beautifully covered with Antique Solartex. The stained woodwork is 32” ply, stained with walnut and polyurethane gloss. Rick Matthews says his Sig Wonder was a two-week build, covered and p a i n t e d w i t h

caused areas of the runway surface to begin lifting (and in some areas, breaking up). While the surface area in the pits is now in very good condition, it is also clear that the runway itself needs a new surface of at least one inch of compacted asphalt. The cost for the latter will be upwards of $13000. We have some work ahead of us in securing the needed funds for this project. In the meanwhile, Don Madison, Keith Miller, and a crew of volunteers are planning to repaint the stripes on the runway and in the pits beginning on Thursday morning, June 30, at around 11:00 a.m. Once the multicolored “floaty” tubing is installed along the top of the new wire fence the field will have a very different look than it did a year ago. If you have not been out to the field lately, come on out and take a look. The days are long and the weather is fine. Happy Skies,

President’s Message By Ben Newkirk

The news for this month focuses around the sealing of the runway at Cactus Park. Events occurred quickly after approval was granted at our meeting on June 7 to go ahead with the project. When Ron Smith contacted the contractor, Mike George, a few days later he was given two alternative dates: Sunday, June 12, or “some time three or more weeks from now.” Ron went with the earlier date. In negotiations, Ron was able to get the entire runway, plus an extension at the west end and the pits included all for the single price of $3000. I met with Mr. George and his crew bright and early Sunday morning. The crew started by completing a very thorough sweeping of the entire surface, using a gas-powered “broom” (or fan). The sealing material was applied with a large spray nozzle handled by one worker and then was spread and smoothed by another worker with a conventional push broom. The accompanying photos show the process clearly. The before-and-after photos show the considerable change in the appearance of the field. I was joined periodically by Ron Smith, Keith Miller, and Ted O’Fallin. We were able to discuss a number of club issues while enjoying the “ambiance” of another beautiful Spring day at Cactus Park. It should be clear to anyone who has visited the park since the sealing was completed that this process is not the equivalent of a complete resurfacing of the runway. Rather, a sealing coat was applied with the intention of retarding further deterioration of the runway surface pending application of a new layer of asphalt. The combination of vehicular traffic on the runway during the recent environmental work (even though this was kept to a minimum by the workers) and the heavy rains this past winter
