1980—World Health Day: Smoking or Health,
the Choice Is Yours

Smoking contributes to the morbidity and mortalityof important diseases such as lung cancer, heartfailure, peripheral vascular disorders, and problemswith breathing.1,2 In addition, the economic costs oftobacco use are equally devastating.
The World Health Organization declared WorldHealth Day in 1980 (April 7) to address the healthproblems resulting from smoking. The theme was“Smoking or health—the choice is yours.”2e4 Manycountries around the world issued stamps to supportthis anti-smoking campaign. On April 7, 1980, TheRepublic of the Philippines issued this stamp (Fig. 1).The stamp depicts a hand putting out a cigarette.
