Handout 1: Thinking skills initiatives  

This list is not exhaustive, but initiatives of interest include:  Philosophy for Children (P4C) aims to encourage children (or adults) to think critically, caringly, creatively and collaboratively. It helps teachers to build a ‘community of enquiry’ where participants create and enquire into their own questions, and learn how to learn in the process.  SAPERE www.sapere.org.uk/  The Philosophy Foundation  www.philosophy‐foundation.org/  Let’s think: Cognitive Acceleration is a programme developed from research related to cognitive acceleration – focusing on questioning, collaborative work, problem solving, independent learning and challenge. It is an approach to teach subjects in the curriculum (e.g. mathematics and science) which focuses on learners’ development as thinkers. www.cognitiveacceleration.co.uk/  Six thinking hats is a tool outlined in Edward de Bono’s ‘Six Thinking Hats’ to help people think more creatively, critically and collaboratively. Each hat represents a different way to channel the direction of thinking: white hat – facts; green hat – creativity; yellow hat – benefits; black hat – cautions; red hat –feelings and blue hat – process.  www.debonoforschools.com/asp/six_hats.asp  Creating a thinking school encourages schools take a whole‐school approach to the teaching of thinking. Thinking becomes central and explicit and all teachers and students develop a common thinking language and toolbox.  www.thinkingschool.co.uk/  Thinking together is a dialogue‐based approach to the development of children’s thinking and learning that connects the development of children’s ‘thinking skills’ to the development of their communication skills and curriculum learning. It emphasises the importance of both teacher‐learner and learner‐learner talk.  http://thinkingtogether.educ.cam.ac.uk/
