ABOUT THE BRAND

Handmade Habitat is an eco-friendly handmade brand of simple, comforting luxuries. It is inspired by the Earth, simplicity and honesty. These values are reflected in the products and designs themselves, as well as in each item’s materials. Each item is handmade by the owner, designer and maker - Amina Ahmad. Whether it is a hand-dyed cotton scarf, a cozy pair of hand-knitted socks or a soothing, soy candle, Handmade Habitat will warm your heart. Good for the Earth and good for the soul.

Handmade Habitat was established in 2010 under the name Cats & Crafts by Amina, but after being tired of asking why she wasn’t selling cats, Amina changed the name to Handmade Habitat in late 2011. She still maintains her blog, Of Cats & Crafts, and still makes catnip toys for stylish and modern, eco-conscious cats (and cat owners).

ABOUT THE DESIGNER & MAKER

Amina Ahmad has been a maker her whole life. She is a recent college graduate of the University of Maryland where she studied Environmental Science and Policy with a focus on human and society’s relationship to the environment. Her studies lead her to the theory that her longtime hobby was actually very environmentally sustainable and she wrote many papers on how the handmade and a handmade marketplace is better for the Earth than mass production. Amina is very inspired by the textures and colors of her neighborhood, Takoma Park. She loves taking her dog for walks, knitting, drinking tea and making things, of course.
