INTRODUCTION
pa and massage are two of themost interesting buzz words inthis unprecedented time and age
of health and wellness. However, due to someconstraints, not everyone is familiar with theexisting laws and regulations pertaining to thespa and massage industry.
This handbook is divided into fourmajor areas: a) things one has to know aboutspa and massage; b) government regulationsbeing implemented by DOH and TESDA; c)
relevant information pertaining to licensing andcertification of massage practitioners, relativeto DOH exams and various kinds of massage;d) hiring and placement of qualified massagetherapists/practitioners..

A. Things you have to know about spa andmassage.
According to the Webster‟s Dictionary,
a spa is a „mineral spring or a locality inwhich such springs exist‟. Commercially, itmeans, “Salus per Aqua‟ or „healingthrough water”.
At present, there are several types of
spas: day spa, hotel or resortspa, destination spa and medical spa.
1. Day Spa – this is a businessestablishment where people go for
professionally administeredpersonal care such as massages,and facials. It is similar to a beautysalon. It is only visited for theduration of the treatment.
2. Hotel or Resort Spa – this is ownedby or located within a hotel orresort that offers professional

3. Destination spa – this is a shortterm residential lodging facility withthe primary purpose of providingindividual services for spa goers tohelp develop healthy habits.
4. Medical spa – is a hybrid betweena medical clinic and a day spa. This
operates under a medical doctor. Itcombines elements of a cosmeticsurgery, aesthetics clinic and abeauty salon.
A spa must have a clean, safe, calmingand nurturing environment.It should have private treatment rooms.

shows that the (hotel spas)tend to attract more leisure travelers.
In the Philippines, especially in some keycities, it is quite noticeablethat more people have become more healthconscious. One best indicatoris the proliferation of spa establishments in
almost every part of the cities.

the “ Wellness Revolution”,the wellness industry is the „next trillion dollar‟ industry in the next decade.”
Practice of Massage
Massage is the systematic manipulationof soft body tissues through manual ormechanical means for relaxation or therapeuticpurposes.
There are two general types of massage:oil massage- a kind of massage that uses oiland other form of lubricants, such as Swedishand Balinese massage; dry massage – massage that uses bare thumbs and fingers.
This occasionally uses powder instead of oil.
Different types of massages in the Philippines:
1. Balinese massage is one of thetraditional Indonesian massages.
This is a full body, deep-tissue,holistic treatment that combines

2. Foot Reflexology is a simple, non-invasive method used to help balancethe body. It is based on the principlethat there are reflexes in the body
which corresponds to every part of the body. When done properly, itcould provide a truly relaxingexperience, while enjoying itstherapeutic benefits as well.

Fitzgerald is better known as theFather of Reflexology. He was
brought to prominence because of his 10 zone theory concept which says
that every part of the footis connected to a specific part of the
human body.
3. Foot spa includes soaking of foot in aslightly warm water and then scrub it
to feel its relaxing effects. Itsvariations may include foot massageand nail treatments. 15-20 minuteswarm foot soak affects the entirevascular system and helps improve
blood circulation.
4. Indian head massage – this is an Ayurvedic form of massage that
has been practiced for thousands of years. It is a very relaxing
treatment and is excellent for neck and shoulder tension. In earlier

Champi is the Indian word forhead massage.
Champissage is another termfor Indian Head massage.
4. Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage: LomiLomi means to „rub‟ or
„massage‟ in Hawaiian. This is atraditional Hawaiian massage
treatment used to bring aboutphysical as well as mental
relaxation. This massage aims to rid
the body of physical andmental stresses and increase energyflow.

7. Namikoshi Shiatsu is an authenticmethod of massage which was madepopular in Japan by its author, thelate Todujiro Namikoshi. Originally
this massage is meant for therapeuticpurposes only. Today, more andmore individuals avail of thisexcellent form of massage treatmentas well. Essentially, this shiatsu

According to tradition, „hilot‟ helps
remove blockages in the bodyalso known as „lamig‟ when done with
slightly heated and oiledbanana leaves. Once the „lamig‟ is

11. Thai massage is a form of massage thatinvolves stretching and
deep massage. It is believed to have
been developed by Thai monks2,500 years ago. It integratesmovements for the entire skeletal
system, enhancing joint range of motion, removing blockages and
improving blood circulation. Due to its
wide range of movements, itis better done on the floor.

Anatomy is the study of the functional areas orparts of human body.
Physiology is the study of biological andchemical processes in the human body.

A. Skeletal system - it consists of bones,
cartilage, ligaments and tendonsand accounts for about 20 percent of the
body weight. They provide arigid frame work, known as the skeleton,
that support and protect thesoft organs of the body. The large bones
of the lower limbs support thetrunk when standing. The skeleton also
protects the soft body parts.The fused bones of the cranium surround
the brain to protect it from
injury. Vertebrae surround and protectthe spinal cord and bones of
the rib cage help protect the heart andlungs of the thorax.

Skin is the largest organ in the human
body. It s weight is 12-15% of the total body
weight. The three layers of the skin are:
epidermis,dermis, and subcutaneous fat.
The dermis is sometimes called the trueskin
because it consists of elastic layerscontaining
blood vessels that nourish the skin.
D. Circulatory system - is composed of theheart, which is a muscular
pumping device, and a closed system of vessels called arteries,
veins, and capillaries. It is the organsystem that passes nutrients,gases, hormones, blood cells and other
nutrients to and from cells of the body. Blood is pumped by the heart
around a closed circuit of
