The Philosophy of the Port Moresby Grammar School states that we are: An Independent School striving for academic excellence in a traditional, disciplined and caring environment. In our school, a strong standard of discipline is maintained. The key word at Port Moresby Grammar School is RESPECT Or, in other words, as in the Book of Mathew 7:12 reads, “Do for others what you want them to do for you: this is the meaning of the Law of Moses and of the teachings of the Prophets” It is the aim of the founders of the School that our students will leave, not only with a strong educational background but also with the strong knowledge and practice of good manners, self-discipline, and pride in themselves, their school and their country. The Port Moresby Grammar School Board of Directors approved this revised edition of the HANDBOOK FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS on 23 September 2010.

SCHOOL RULES As a condition of enrolment, all students and their parents or guardians undertake, in writing, to respect and to follow the School rules of Port Moresby Grammar School. The school reinforces traditional values and provides a disciplined, safe and secure learning environment for its students. Self-discipline, through support, guidance and consistency, is the ultimate goal for all students. 1. ATTENDANCE Attendance at all lessons is compulsory. It is not acceptable to be absent from one class in order to complete work for another subject. Students are expected to be at school and attend each class on time. It is the school’s aim to produce graduates prepared for employment or training, who understand the importance of punctuality in the workplace. The School enters students for the PNG National Examinations: it must therefore follow the rules governing those exams. Department of Education Secretary’s Instruction 2/94 states: The maximum period of absence from school beyond which student is considered ineligible for certification is 30 days continuous or cumulative absence in any one school year. If a student has a good reason to be away from school, the parents or guardians must endeavor to contact the school. On returning to school, the student must bring a written explanation from parents or a doctor and give it to his/her Class Patron. School fee absences and disciplinary suspension days count towards the 30-day rule. When a student’s absences reach 20 days, a letter will be sent to the parent or guardian advising them of the ruling. If absences are unexplained, parents will be asked to come for an interview. If the maximum period of absence is reached, the student may either be: • Deemed ineligible to sit for the National Exams • Advised to repeat the year • Referred to the Head of School for withdrawal from School 2. DRIVING TO SCHOOL Senior students are permitted to drive to school. The parents/guardians are to inform the Principal in writing of the arrangement at the beginning of the year.

3. FEELING SICK DURING THE DAY Students who fall sick during the day must report to the Class Patron who then refers him/her to the respective Heads of Schools. If a student is too sick to continue lessons, the Head of School will decide if a parent/guardian should be called to pick up the child from the school to go home. A permission slip to leave school must be signed and issued by the Head of School or the Principal. 4. LEAVING SCHOOL DURING THE DAY Students must have a note from a parent/guardian requesting permission to leave school at a certain time. This note is to be shown to the class Patron to sign. A permission slip to leave school will be signed and issued by the Head of School when the student shows the letter. No student should leave the school premises during the day without the signed permission slip from the respective Heads of Schools or the Principal. 5. PUNCTUALITY Coming late to school is often the result, not of the distance travelled, but the poor time management of the student, and in some cases, the parents. The school day starts at 7.45am when the students should assemble before they go into class. Students arriving after that time are deemed late. At 8:15 a.m., the school gates will close. Students are admitted only after the Teacher on Duty records their names and has their diary stamped ‘Late’. Late arrivals must always present their stamped diary before a teacher will admit them to a room. Students who are late disrupt the class. Students who arrive after 8:15 a.m will not be permitted into period 1 lesson and will be asked by the Teacher on Duty to do a cleaning task. Students who arrive after 8:40a.m. will not be permitted into period 2 and will be asked by the Teacher on Duty to do a cleaning task. Students who arrive after 9:20a.m. will not be allowed into School and the Head of School will call the parents to pick up their child. After the Teacher on Duty releases the student, the student will go to his/her classroom, knock and stand at the door until advised by the teacher or class captain to go to their seat. Students who are repeatedly late will be asked to bring their parents for an interview with the Heads of Senior or Junior School.

If our specialist lesson is after recess or after lunch, then we are to take our books for Periods 5 & 7 when we leave the classroom for recess and lunch. We are to move to the Specialist Room as soon as the bell has rung. Recess and Lunch Our breaks are so important for revitalizing us so we go out at recess and lunch and have something to eat and drink. We socialize with other students at Recess and Lunch and we get to know as many students as we can. We do not sit in the classroom and become anti-social. We remain in the classroom on wet days or if a teacher asks us to complete a task. Moving to the Canteen We move quickly. We are always courteous and we keep to the left hand side of the corridors.

Junior School Courtyard for the Years 7-12 students Grades 6 &7 & 8 corridors are out of bounds for Years 9 -12. All Areas behind the School Haus Tambaran. Private Offices. Gardens. Classrooms at Recess and Lunch HEALTHY FOOD We eat healthy lunches and morning tea. We understand that many of our traditional foods contain nutrients essential for a healthy body and a healthy mind. We save sweets and fatty treats for special occasions. We drink a lot of water instead of drinks containing a lot of sugar. GENERAL HYGIENE We are young adults and we are proud to show that we understand the benefits of being clean and healthy. We DO NOT chew, smoke or drink for very good health reasons. We ensure that we wear deodorant in the morning because our climate makes us perspire easily and this can be unpleasant for ourselves and for others. We wash our hands before we handle food. We wash our hands thoroughly after we have used the toilets. We carry a handkerchief or a tissue and we cover our mouth and nose when we cough or sneeze. We DO NOT spit. We maintain a good oral hygiene and we ensure that a dentist regularly checks our teeth. USE OF TOILETS Recess and lunch hours are times when we use the toilets. Unless we are desperate, we refrain from using the toilets in between periods. If we wish to use the toilets in between periods, we ask the teacher who will hand out an EXIT PASS. Port Moresby Grammar School students do not “hang out” in the toilets. They hang out with friends in the Courtyard.

29

We show courtesy to others by flushing the toilet cleanly after we use it. If there is no water or toilet tissue, we report it to the Head of School. We show courtesy to others by throwing our rubbish in the bins placed in the toilets and not in the hand basins. SPORTS WEAR We wear our sports uniform when we play sports because we need to be correctly attired when we are doing a lot vigorous exercise. We wear proper sports shoes because we need to protect our feet from being injured while we play. If we play in our uniform, we might ruin our school shoes and our school uniform. We wear our school cap/hat to protect ourselves from the sun. MUFTI DAY DRESS CODE (Only two options) We are either in full mufti or we are in full uniform and we are neatly attired and presentable in both instances. Mufti does not mean”shabby” and “untidy”. We are supportive of our student leaders in the SRC and pay the “damage” for wearing mufti or wearing uniform. We DO NOT wear thongs unless the theme is beachwear. GENERAL CONDUCT IN THE SCHOOL When addressed by a Teacher in the classroom or in the school grounds We stand up straight and look at the teacher when we are being addressed. We do not place our hands in our pocket when a teacher or any other adult is addressing us. When addressed by a Support Staff We show them the same respect we show our teachers. When a teacher enters the Classroom We stand up straight and look at the teacher when a teacher enters the Classroom. When the teacher greets us then, he or she will invite us to sit down. When a teacher is walking along the corridor It is good manners to stand to the side when a teacher is walking along. When we are waiting for a teacher to commence a lesson We believe in a strong culture of learning so we are prepared for our lessons. If a teacher is a little late, we read our notes or we read a book.

30

We do not disturb other students who have the right to learn in a quiet environment. We speak quietly to other students if we wish to say something. When talking to fellow students It is good manners to speak so that only our group can hear us. We do not laugh loudly to attract the attention of others. We do not shout at other students. We do not swear at other fellow students. It is NOT only rude; it is against our School Rules. We are mindful that we do not offend our fellow students. When we are talking in the corridor, we stand side by side. We are mindful that we do not inconvenience the through traffic. When we hear an announcement, we stop and listen. We do not continue to talk while the announcement is being made because this is rude and we might miss the important information being conveyed. When you see a parent or visitor in the School Our parents and visitors deserve the same respect we accord our teachers and fellow students. We make them feel welcome to our great School. We ask them if they need help if they look lost. PROHIBITED ITEMS Flash drives. IPods & other Music Players Items that could be used as a dangerous weapon White out. Permanent and Whiteboard markers. 31

We are proud to show our Port Moresby Grammar School Uniform and we have every reason to do so because we are the BEST school in Port Moresby. We keep our shirts and blouses tucked in when we are outside the School grounds. We DO NOT Smoke or chew betel nut in Public as this will damage the reputation of our School. We do not offend the Public. Using the Pedestrian Crossing We use the Pedestrian crossing at all times. We do not endanger our lives and the lives of others by not observing simple road rules. We obey the Monitor on duty. It is good manners to thank the motorist for waiting while you cross the road. We do this by either doffing your School cap/Hat or nodding to them in acknowledgement or waving to them and saying “Thank You” visibly so that the driver can see your appreciation. SCHOOL PREFECTS The student body elects school Prefects. Because we elected them, they deserve all our support. We have faith and trust that they will carry out their duties diligently. We show them the respect that they deserve and we listen to them as we would listen to our teachers. SCHOOL COUNSELLOR Our School Counsellor is available at recess, lunch, before, and after school. We sometimes worry about things or we are hurt about something so it is important that we talk about it to someone so that our worry does not adversely affect our schoolwork. We need to be happy at school at all times so we are encouraged to talk to our School Counsellor if we need help in some way or the other. The School Counsellor maintains a high level of confidentiality. RESPECT FOR SCHOOL PROPERTY We do not take anything that belongs to the School. It costs a lot of money to have to replace missing property apart from breaking the School Rule. We report any damage to School Property. RESPECT FOR OTHER PEOPLES’ PROPERTY We do not take anything that does NOT belong to us. We will hurt the person concerned because we have taken something that means a lot to him or her.

FOUNDATION DAY Foundation Day is a day in Term 1 that we come together as a School to mark the anniversary of the establishment of this great school. We show our delight and appreciation by joining in the celebration with our guardians and our parents. We showcase our traditional dances with pride and we accord it the dignity it deserves. Our Cultural heritage is important in our development as young adults and in the shaping of the society, we live in. FRIENDS OF THE ENVIRONMENT (Please become a member of earth@grammar) We love the environment we live in so we throw our rubbish in the bins. We switch off lights and fans if we are not in the classroom to save energy. We switch off computer monitors after we have used them to save energy. We bring clean empty jam jars and sauce bottles from home and we donate them to the Hospital. We use both sides of the paper to save our trees. We love our city of Port Moresby so we do not litter. We ensure that we turn off taps properly so that we save water. We report water leaks in the bathrooms or outside taps. TIPS FOR BEING A GOOD LISTENER Give your full attention on the person who is speaking. Do not look at what else is going on around you. Make sure your mind is focused, too. It can be easy to let your mind wander if you think you know what the person is going to say next, but you might be wrong! If you feel your mind wandering, change the position of your body and try to concentrate on the speaker’s words. Let the speaker finish before you begin to talk. Speakers appreciate having the chance to say everything they would like to say without being interrupted. When you interrupt, it looks like you are not listening, even if you really are. Let yourself finish listening before you begin to speak! You cannot really listen if you are busy thinking about what you want to say next. Listen for main ideas. The main ideas are the most important points the speaker wants to get across. They may be mentioned at the start of the talk or the end of the talk, and repeated a number of times.

Page 33: Handbook for Students and Parents€¦ · Physical Education (PE) Students – are to wear their Sports Uniform to school on their spots r day. All students should purchase the school

33

Pay special attention to statements that begin with phrases such as” My point is…” or “the thing to remember is…” Ask questions if you are not sure you understand what the speaker has said, just ask. It is a good idea to repeat in your own words what the speaker said so that you can be sure your understanding is correct. Give feedback. Sit up straight and look directly at the speaker. Now and then, nod to show you understand. At appropriate points, you may also smile, frown, laugh or be silent. These are all ways to let the speaker know that you are really listening; Remember you listen with your face as well as your ears. Thinking fast Remember: time is on your side! Thoughts move about four times as fast as speech. With practice, while you are listening you will be able to think about what you are hearing, really understand it.

SCHOOL LUNCHES The Canteen is independently run and provides a variety of lunches. For the Junior School, parents need to place lunch orders in the canteen. Packed lunches from home are the ideal. We encourage our students to eat healthily and drink water rather than juice or fizzy drinks. On your child’s sports day, please ensure that your child has enough water to drink. It has been a matter of concern to the School that some students tend to come to school with quite a huge sum of money. Please limit what your child carries in his/her pockets to just enough money to cover for their lunch and bus fare. Please note that our Front Office Staff do not deliver lunches to the students so we encourage you to be more organised. 8. ARRIVING AT SCHOOL The School does not provide any form of transport for the students. It is the parents’ responsibility to transport his or her child to and from school each day. 14. LATENESS TO SCHOOL We are well aware of the congestion in the city but it is your responsibility as a parent to ensure that your child arrives well before school commences. Your child will start on a good note if he or she is early and better prepared for school. Our experience has shown that students who are often late generally have a low self-esteem and this in turn has an adverse effect on their academic performance. The School insists on punctuality as better time management is part of your child’s development.

15. DISMISSAL Students from Prep to Year 6 wait within the Junior School gate for their parents. The Teacher On Duty will call your child to the gate once the parents or the person authorised to pick up your child is at the gate. There are only a few teachers who are in charge of the Dismissal duty to ensure that your child is picked up by authorised persons only. Please fill in the Pick Up Authority Form, which should list the people authorised to pick up your child. The form should be filled in at the commencement of each year and pasted in front of your child’s diary. 16 LATE PICK UP There are some students who are picked up very late in the afternoon and some times, students are still at school after 5:00 p.m. Students need to be at home at a reasonable hour so that they can have a rest after a long day at school, do their homework and have an early night. Your child will need a good eight hours of sleep per night. 17. PEDESTRIAN CROSSING Please reduce speed when you are approximately 500 metres to our School Pedestrian Crossing. Two members of our Staff manage the crossing each morning and afternoon and both are in luminous jacket. We welcome volunteers for this duty. Please email our Office Manager [email protected] if you wish to be involved with our crossing duty or car park duty. Support us in educating your child in being road safety conscious. 18. PARKING There is adequate parking space in the Oval Area. Our narrow driveway entrance into the Car park from Bava Street requires all our drivers to be mindful of children crossing from the Oval Area into the School or across the entrance of the Car park into the school. In the interest of everyone’s safety, please drive into the car park entrance, park your vehicle and then allow your child to alight and walk into the School. In the Afternoon, please park your vehicle in the car park and walk into the School to pick up your child. We would prefer that you DO NOT ask your child to wait on the kerb side or at the bus stop for you. The Traffic build up is quite heavy between 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. and it can be hazardous for pedestrians and hold ups occur too. 19. PARENTS’ REQUEST FOR CHILD TO EXIT THE SCHOOL DURING THE DAY If you wish to take your child out of class during the day, please write a note to the Head of Junior School or the Deputy Head of Junior School or the Head of Senior School who will give your child a permission slip to leave the School. Please comply with our School procedure,

as this is essential for your child’s safety. 20. STRICT ACCESS INTO THE SCHOOL DURING SCHOOL HOURS At 8:15 a.m. each morning, our School gates will be closed. The visitor will be required to sign out and hand the badge back in to the front office Staff. Please cooperate with us. Your child’s safety is paramount to us. 21. APPOINTMENTS Please ring the Front office to make an appointment if you wish to see a member of Staff during school hours. You may also text us to any one of the two school mobile numbers listed in the last section of this book. The teachers are in class at various times during the day and will not be able to leave the class to see you. Appointments will be set from three o’clock onwards unless of course we are able to slot you in during the day. 22. SCHOOL’S REQUEST FOR AN INTERVIEW WITH PARENTS Should we require an interview with you, the teacher will contact you directly by phone, by letter, via your child’s diary or by email. 2. CURRICULUM (Please also read our Curriculum Handbooks) Port Moresby Grammar School follows the prescribed PNG curriculum for Years Prep to 12. Outcomes Based learning has been part our teaching modus operandi for many years. Some parents are quite anxious about the new curriculum when they should not. If one could explain it simplistically, Outcomes Based Education is a rearrangement of learning in the classroom to better suit the child. There are no changes to the actual content of what your child is learning. What changes in OBE are the style of teaching and the style of assessment. Please also read our Curriculum handbooks for the Year levels. This is made available to the Parents on Parents’ and Teachers’ Information Night. 3. ASSESSEMENT SCHEDULES Schedules are given out at the commencement of the School Year. Please ask your child if he or she has a copy. 4. ACADEMIC REPORTS The School produces two types of report for your child. One is a Mid - Semester Report, which reports on your child’s progress during the term. It includes learning aspects such as how your child completes set tasks in class, how many assessment modules your child has completed and your child’s general attitude to school. The Mid - Semester Report is given twice a year in Terms 1 & 3. Please read this carefully and communicate with us to ensure that your child is on track with their performance. The second type of reporting is an Academic Report. This is issued twice a year at the end of each semester, Terms 2 & 4. This reporting covers your child’s performance in one semester. The students are required to complete the prescribed assessment modules for each course in a semester. The marks are cumulative and your child is ranked in the Year group for each course. (Please also read the Curriculum Handbooks – these are issued at Parents’ and Teachers’ Information Night. 5. INTERNATIONAL EXAMINATIONS Our School offers the following International Examinations. The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS). The ICAS is the largest independent assessment programme for schools in Australia and it is part of the University of New South Wales Global Pty Ltd, a not- for- profit provider of education, training and consulting services. Every student entering ICAS receives a certificate acknowledging participation. Students are eligible for awards including High Distinction, Distinction and Credit Certificates as well as the prestigious University of New South Wales ICAS medals. Visit their website at www.eaa.unsw.edu.au or email them at [email protected] Examinations offered at our School are as follows:

NSW Education & Training National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). This is a benchmark test for literacy and numeracy for Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. This test is held around May each year. The test also provide parents and schools with information on each child’s skills in literacy and numeracy. For further information, please visit the NAPLAN* website at http://www.naplan.edu.au/ Please also see School Fee Information. 6. READING PROGRAMME Much care is taken in our reading programmes in the early years. The School has an established phonics programme for students from Prep to Year 2. Our students are put through a Reading Test by the School at various intervals during the year. The school uses the PM Benchmark Kit to assess students ’reading abilities using unseen and meaningful texts. It includes 30 accurately level texts ranging progressively from emergent level to reading age 12. 7. LEARNING SUPPORT - LITERACY This is a reading recovery programme for students designed to reduce literacy failures. It aims to accelerate student progress, to the average level of their grade, as quickly as possible so students may obtain maximum benefit from their classroom instruction. The School uses the Phonics Alive Programme. 8. EXCURSIONS Various excursions for Years Prep to Year 12 are organised by the teachers throughout the year. A fee is required and this is updated in the latest Information for Parents. Please pick up a copy from the Front office. The students are expected to be in full school uniform on these days unless they are requested to do otherwise. Please ensure that your child has enough water to drink on the day of the excursion. Parents of our junior students may join the excursion if they wish. Please email the Head of Middle School or the Head of Lower School if you wish to join the day’s excursion. 9. HOLIDAY CLASSES Holiday classes are conducted for Years 10 and 12 during the terms breaks. The classes are

Page 48: Handbook for Students and Parents€¦ · Physical Education (PE) Students – are to wear their Sports Uniform to school on their spots r day. All students should purchase the school

48

held in the mornings from 8:00 to 12:20 noon - Monday to Wednesday during the break. The classes are not compulsory but should you wish to have your child attend, the School will require a signed authority. A form is sent out just before the term break. 10. SCHOOL LEAVER FORMS FOR YEAR 12 The School Leaver Forms are completed by the Year 12 students towards the end of Term 3. Our experience has shown that quite a few parents strongly influence their child’s choice when they are filling in the School Leaver Forms. Parents make a decision on what their child should do. In some cases we have experienced in this School, the parents’ expectation and what the child can do often do not reconcile. This “push” from the parents has seen quite a few students make an unwise choice in their School leaver Forms. Sadly, the student does not get a placement. The impact on a student’s morale is often devastating, to say the least, when the student has not achieved the prerequisite mark required for a particular course. To avoid this sort of disappointment for both you and your child, please communicate with the School. Your child knows what he or she is capable. The teachers know what your child can do. Sensible advice from the teachers and yourselves should guide your child choose wisely. 11. CAREERS Our Year 12 students are given ample opportunity to visit workplaces or be visited by representatives of various companies such as the major banks and other small businesses. The School also invites representatives of Technical institutions and the two Universities to come and talk to our students. If your child is given an opportunity to work soon after he or she leaves school, then it would be a sensible decision. Sometimes earning that money immediately after school will better prepare the student for the economic responsibility that they will face if and when they start a family. Financial literacy is included in our careers lesson in Year 12. Please feel free to talk to us as often as possible in your child’s final two years at school.

POLICIES

1. RULES, SCHOOL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES The founders of this school have taken great care in establishing our school rules. The rules have been written, taking into consideration our Christian principles, our traditional values of respect and the rule of law of Papua New Guinea. Things such as pornography, dangerous weapons and drugs are treated seriously. Our rules are important in shaping our students for life after school, in making them aware of the importance of good governance and of becoming a good citizen of Papua New Guinea. Please work with us in guiding your child. When students break our rules, they are breaking their declaration that they signed with the school at their enrolment. The declaration that is signed by both the parents and the students will need re-reading from time to time. We have included the declaration in this handbook so that we can work together as a family to help our students. 2. SUSPENSION AS A CONSEQUENCE OF ACTION No School enjoys suspending a student as it means time out of school for your child. However, Port Moresby Grammar School is very clear on its rules and policies and it will suspend students who cross the line deliberately or who break our rules more than once. We have included in the students’ handbook, penalties that the School will impose if a child breaks our rule. Please take time to read this through with your child. Port Moresby Grammar school operates as a family school and it is the School’s expectations that older students act as good role models for the younger ones. Suspension will only occur if a very serious rule has been broken or the child has difficulty complying with our rules. We always remind our students that it is easier to comply with our rules than to face the Disciplinary Committee. 3. RELIGION We are a multi-denominational school and our prayers and service on special days like Easter are ecumenical. Our students say their morning prayers in the Assembly every morning before school commences. If you would like to assist us in this area, please see our Special Events Coordinator.

2. FOUNDATION DAY Our Foundation day is a day that the School comes together at the end of Term 1 to celebrate the founding of our School. Please join us in this celebration as we not only celebrate our humble beginnings but we also celebrate our culture. Many of our students are born and bred in the city so to promote this wonderful aspect of our culture, learning our traditional dances has become an extension of our formal curriculum. In 2011, the School will include traditional dance, song or poetry as an assessment module in Personal development. 3. JUNIOR SCHOOL DISCO The Discos for Years Prep to Grade 6 are held twice a year in Term 2 and Term 4 in the Junior School courtyard. The Staff choose a theme and art classes are used to make the decoration for the dance. This is usually an exciting time for the little ones. From the School’s point of view, the students learn important social skills and generally, we want the students just to have fun. There is usually a very good turn out of parents who use it as an opportunity to meet other parents or an opportunity to have a family night out. There is usually a sausage sizzle going at a reasonable prize. Please attend. 4. JUNIOR SCHOOL SPORTS DAY The Junior School from Years 1 - 6 have an organised sports day at our School Oval. The Sports Day is held for half a day from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Please come, join the little ones, and if you wish to be part of the supervision please email us. Head of Lower School [email protected] Head of Middle School [email protected] 5. COMMUNITY DAYS Community Days has been part of our excursion for the last four years. Our students donate to the Franciscan House in 16 Miles and in return, the students have a day out on their property. A note is sent home with the students and the cost includes transport and lunch, which is usually a sausage sizzle, a drink and a fruit. The lunch is sufficient and students do not need to bring extra food. They may bring an extra snack if they so wish and lots of water to drink. 6. PARENTS AND TEACHERS’ INFORMATION EVENING This is held at our School once or twice a year usually in Term 1 to inform you about what your child will be learning during the year. You will also be given your child’s assessment programme. Please attend these meetings, as it is an opportunity for you to meet the teachers and use the time to clarify things with the Staff.

7. SENIOR SCHOOL MINI CONCERT The Mini Concert is organised by the Student Representative Council and this is held in Term 2 each year. The SRC would meet with the Principal and agree the school project it would fund from the proceeds of the Mini Concert. The concert grows in popularity each year and it is well supported by the student body. The SRC are given this opportunity by the School to learn important organisational skills and more importantly learn important aspects of leadership. Please attend or encourage your child to be part of this student-organised activity. The teachers keep a respectful distance but a watchful eye from the concert planning to the actual performance. 8 YEAR 12 GRADUATION The Year 12’s have a graduation ceremony, which is held a couple of weeks after their final HSC paper. Parents and Guardians of Year 12 are issued with invitations to attend. The ceremony is a formal occasion and it is a time that the School farewells our final year students. The students may wear their traditional costume on this day. Otherwise, the School insists on neat formal attire on this special day. 9 YEAR 12 FAREWELLL DINNER The Year 12 formal dinner is a school event and a formal invitation to the parents is issued by the Principal. This dinner, which is usually held in one of the big hotels, is an opportunity for the parents of our Year 12 students, the Year 12 students and the staff to celebrate the Year 12’s final year at school. This is an event that is well attended by the parents and an event to which our Year 12 students look forward. The formal committee, which consists of representatives of the Year 12 classes, the Dean of Years 11 and 12, is chaired by the Principal. There is a strict dress code and students are usually briefed on the expected forms of behaviour in formal functions. 10 GOOD FEELING ASSEMBLY In period 1 on Fridays, the School comes together from Year Prep to 12 for a Good Feeling Assembly. The events coordinator will select the classes that will put on an item for that week. The main reason is “good feeling”. The students are given an opportunity to show-case their talents, give a speech or tell us what they have been learning. It is usually a nice break from formal classes and the school being together helps foster the feeling of being part of the family in the school. 11. WEEKEND SPORTS Sports is an important part of our curriculum and we encourage many of our students to participate in the soccer matches run by the Soccer Association and the Independent Schools Sports Association, which run the netball for the girls. We appreciate any form of help from parents, be it in coaching, washing team jerseys or helping with providing water. Please email the Principal –[email protected] if you would like to be part of the weekend sports programme.

12. YEAR 11 CAMP The Year 11 camp is held over a period of two weeks in Sogeri and the students and the teachers reside at the Sogeri Lodge. The purpose of the camp is to teach the students important skills that will help them to cope with their final year at school. The camp also focuses on leadership, making choices, working with others and more importantly an opportunity for students to reflect on who they really are and what they would like to do when they leave school. The School has had two years of very successful camps led by our senior staff. 13. SRC CHARITY DRIVE The Student Representative Council, launch two major charity drives in a year. The drive is usually in kind. Please donate generously, if there is an appeal from the School Captains. The SRC donate sweets and toys to the Children’s’ ward at Christmas time and milk and baby toiletries to the Nursery Ward in the POM General Hospital. The SRC also donate to the Cheshire Home.

WELFARE

1. EMERGENCY DRILL The School has a standard evacuation Plan and all the students go through this at the commencement of each year and periodically throughout the year. Every classroom has an evacuation plan pasted near the door. Please take time to read the plan if you are in the Front office. If you are caught up in the drill, we would expect you to be part of it. 2. STAFF WITH FIRST AID CERTIFICATES All the middle management staff, our sports teachers and some support staff have a first aid certificate. The Staff also attend a refresher course each year. 3. SICK CHILDREN If your child is sick and is too unwell to be at school, the School will ring you to pick your child up straight away. Please ensure that all your contact numbers are up to date. We do not allow any student to leave the site without your permission. 4. CONTAGIOUS DISEASES The School is well informed of the types of diseases that are contagious.
