BirthdaysA camper’s birthday is very special! Campers celebrate with a cabin party and a Birthday Ball celebration (at our longer sessions). For birthdays, campers may receive cards, letters, and ONE birthday package (no food) from the parents.

Birthday Labels: We will be sending a birthday mailing label (prior to camp) to use for the ONE birthday package from the parents. Please use this label for the birthday package so that the package makes it into camp and to your daughter.

PenpalsIn the springtime you will receive a card with the name of your daughter’s Penpal. Encourage your camper to write her Penpal; it is disappointing when a Penpal does not write. Request for your camper’s Penpal to be in her cabin (on your Cabin Request Form) if that is important to you. We do not automatically put your camper’s Penpal in the cabin. Try writing a 2nd time if you have not heard from your Penpal.

In addition to a Penpal, all 3rd, 4th, and some 5th graders at Main Camp will receive a “Big Sister” in the spring. At Main Camp, our 9th - 11th graders don’t have a Penpal.

Cabin AssignmentsWe encourage campers to attend without concern for cabin requests, but we will make every effort to place your daughter with ONE special requested friend, IF that friend also requests her.

Please understand that clear communication with your requested friend is very important. If you do not think it best to be with a camper who is requesting your daughter, be honest with the parents involved. Such difficult conversations are easier before camp. Cabin requests are not confidential. We place girls in the cabin with other campers in their same grade. If space requires us to have a cabin with two grades in it, then we will consider double requests from girls who are one grade apart only. Please do not assume that we know your request already. If your girls are twins, please let us know if they are requesting to be together. If you have questions about cabin requests, please contact:

Junior - [email protected], Main and August - [email protected]

If you would like to request someone, please fill out the Cabin Request Form before the deadline of May 1st. Feel free to not request anyone…meeting new people is the best part of camp! You will find out your daughter’s cabin assignment when she arrives on Opening Day (not before).

Bunks and DecoratingIn order to comply with health regulations, all camp bunkbeds are set up Head-to-Toe, meaning that campers on the top bunk cannot have their heads facing the same direction as campers on the bottom.

Camp Bedding: New this year! We will have sheets and a red jersey style blanket available for all campers. Beds will no longer be made, as many campers choose to bring their own bedding. If bringing your own bedding, please bring two sheet sets at our June and Main sessions, as we can not wash personal sheets. Many campers bring egg crates for their beds, but these are not necessary. You can also purchase these through the Greystone Store online, and they will be waiting at your cabin on Opening Day. We recommend a comforter or warm blanket for cold nights, and all campers need to bring a pillow and pillowcases.

Bunk Assignments: New this year! We will be assigning bunks at Junior, June, and August Camps this summer. You will find out your bunk assignment when you arrive at your cabin on Opening Day. We cannot accommodate bunk

5

requests, and you may not switch bunks. At Main Camp, campers will be able to choose their bunk when they arrive to their cabin on Opening Day. We do not allow bunk saving.

Bunk Decorations: Campers may only bring bedding items and photos to decorate their bunks. Bedding items include blankets, stuffed animals, personal sheets/comforters (if you choose to bring these), and pillows. As in years past, you cannot bring plug-in or

battery operated string lights. Please do not bring extension cords (these are safety issues enforced by our fire marshal).

Each camper will have a large wooden drawer under her bunk where she can unpack her clothes. These drawers are 32 x 32 x 9.5 inches.

No Visitor PolicyGreystone has a No Visitor Policy that applies to all of our camp sessions. This policy includes trips out of camp with parents/friends; these are not allowed. We recommend parents visit camp on Opening and Closing Days to tour camp. Greystone will be closed to visitors between sessions as we prepare for Opening Day. We love giving tours to prospective camp families - tell your friends!

Required Camp travel? Any campers with required travel that occurs during camp must be pre-approved prior to Opening Day. Please e-mail: [email protected].

Early Bird EnrollmentSave a spot for 2019! Early Bird Enrollments for our 2019 sessions will open for ALL 2018 campers (who are in good standing) on Friday, August 10th. We will send you a letter and a series of emails as we enter the Early Bird time frame; we do not want there to be any misunderstandings. You must complete this registration prior to Sunday, August 26th in order to be guaranteed a spot in the session of your choice. It is normal for camp to fill during the Early Bird Enrollment, so it is very important that you not delay in registering. Your deposit is fully refundable until November 1st, so consider this to be a no risk decision!

Food & Dietary ConcernsWe have wonderful food at camp and serve three well-balanced, healthy meals a day. Campers can also enjoy Apple Cart during morning classes, Watermelon Table after Rest Hour, and can visit our Snack Huts, where we offer free snacks of cheese sticks, granola bars, or bean chips. After dinner, campers can visit our free Candy Shoppe where they can enjoy one sweet, savory, or healthy snack.

We are able to accommodate most major food allergies and provide many options for picky eaters. Please see our website for more information: Parents/Health & Safety/Health Care.

Personal allowanceThe Store Allowance/Personal Expense account is designed to cover any extra expense a camper incurs while at Greystone. Please refer to your Online Forms to add money to your daughter’s Greystone Store personal allowance account.

Suggested amounts: Junior: $75, June: $150, Main: $175, August: $125

The Store account can be used for purchasing Greystone merchandise (tshirts or sweatshirts), bedding items (blankets, pillows, egg crates), Crazy Creek chairs, backpacks and totes, flashlights, toiletries, stationery, swim gear and towels, and the little things your daughter may need (batteries, stamps, etc.). The account is also used to cover any prescription medications needed, the Main Camp group picture, and more.

During the summer, you can see how much money your daughter has left in her account by clicking the ‘View Store Allowance/Personal Expenses’ link in your Greystone Account. This amount is current within 24-48 hours. Through the Greystone Store website, you can then add money to your daughter’s account if you would like.

The Greystone Store is online: www.thegreystonestore.com. We encourage you to buy clothing and larger items prior to camp. Use your Greystone Account login to sign in.

We provide mail bins on the office porch on Opening Day for you to leave mail for the first few days of camp. Many parents pre-write letters before Opening Day to leave in these bins.

Under the Online Community menu, you may create guest accounts for family. We do not allow friends to e-mail campers (encourage them to send letters). Do not give out your password, as your account is connected to your financial information. E-mails with inappropriate content are not delivered.

No Package PolicyGreystone is Package-Free! Campers may not receive packages at camp. All large envelopes, padded envelopes and regular envelopes containing “anything” (other than your letter) are considered packages and will be returned.

However, if there is a necessary item left at home (i.e. toothbrush, Bible, rainboots, eye glasses, retainer, pillow), you may mail the package addressed to:

Laura Hollowell ATTN: (Your Camper’s FULL Name)

We cannot wait to welcome you to Greystone on Opening Day! For all of our sessions, campers may go up to their cabin and meet their counselor starting at 8:30 a.m.

For All Sessions: You may arrive anytime between 7:30 - 9:30 a.m., but we will not allow campers and families into our cabin area until 8:30 a.m. When you arrive on Opening Day, you will be greeted at your car and find out your daughter’s cabin. We will tag your heavier bags and carry them to the cabin for you. You will need to carry loose items (wear comfortable, waterproof shoes).

If you arrive prior to 8:30 a.m., we invite you to join us at our Opening Day Tent. You can meet other families and grab a coffee. At 8:30 a.m., you can walk up to your cabin. Your daughter’s counselor will be there to meet you!

You are then welcome to unpack, to visit our parent reception on the Dining Hall porch, and to take medications to the Health Hut. The Greystone Store will also be open. There is no need to check in at the office, unless you have a question. Please plan to depart by 10:15 a.m., as campers begin cabin activities at that time.

New this year! Animals: We ask that dogs and all other animals stay below our Lower Road on Opening Day and do not go into the cabin area. Animals must be on a leash.

Junior, June & August Camp: Because bunks will be assigned (see p. 4 for more details), there is no need to race up the hill to your cabin. At 8:30 a.m., we will have Group Leaders ready to walk campers and parents to the cabin area.

Main Camp: At 8:30 a.m., we will allow campers to go up to their cabin area. Remember, no bunk saving.

June & Main NEW campers: If this is your first summer at Greystone, you will be able to go up to your cabin prior to 8:30 a.m. to ensure that you know where to go. We will contact our new camper families prior to Opening Day to explain how this will work.

Airplane ArrivalIf Greystone is responsible for picking your daughter up from the airport, please enter her flight information on your Online Travel & Baggage Form. Important: If you are flying into the area and renting a car to bring your daughter to camp yourself, she is considered a CAR ARRIVAL. Only girls who need to be picked up at the airport by a camp representative are considered flying.

We service two airports: Asheville, NC (AVL) - 25 minutes from camp Greenville, SC (GSP) - 1 hour from camp

A Greystone representative will greet your camper at the airport, help collect bags, and drive her to camp. Please note, we may be picking up multiple campers with close flight times before shuttling to camp.

If your camper is flying, we recommend sending luggage via UPS ahead of time (see Shipping Luggage on pg. 18). If luggage is sent on the airline, please clearly mark any bags as a Camp Greystone item, with your daughter’s first and last name.

UNACCOMPANIED MINORAs you purchase your daughter’s ticket, please check your airline’s Unaccompanied Minor policy. If your daughter is considered an Unaccompanied Minor on your airline, this must be purchased while booking the ticket. Please be sure to get a receipt or email confirmation that this fee has been paid, as the Travel Director will request this document from you closer to camp.

Please Note: Adding Unaccompanied Minor after the initial purchase of her ticket can be difficult and cause issues for your daughter as she checks in at the airport. It can also lead to double charges by the airline.

When asked to provide information on who will be meeting or taking your daughter to the airport, please enter:

For All Sessions: On Closing Day, the gates open at 7:30 a.m., and we encourage you to be here before 9:00 a.m. You will park in the same manner as Opening Day, then walk up the hill to your daughter’s cabin.

We carry all of your daughter’s heavier items down to the track and sort them by cabin. Please check the tags on the bags, as we have labeled them (i.e. “1 of 4,” “2 of 4,” etc.). We will have staff available to help you load your car.

AIRPLANE DEPARTUREIf Greystone is responsible for taking your daughter to the airport, please enter her flight information on the online Travel & Baggage Form. Important: If you are flying into the area and renting a car to pick up your daughter from camp yourself, she is considered a CAR DEPARTURE. Only girls who are taken to the airport with a shuttle provided by Greystone are considered flying home from camp.

On Closing Day, girls prefer to take the early flights (around 8am); otherwise, they are waiting at camp after all other campers have gone home. All flights should be scheduled to depart no later than 2pm.

Greystone can transport one checked bag to the airport for your daughter. We will pay the checked bag fee for you and

We have one of the most impressive Health Care staffs anywhere! We hope that your daughter will never need to experience our Health Hut, but if she needs us, we are here to help her get back on her feet. Greystone has up to 7 registered nurses, a 24-hour a day resident doctor, and our Health Director to care for your daughter.

We are committed to calling you if there is ever an issue that affects your daughter’s camp experience. This would include: if your camper spends the night at the Health Hut, needs a prescription medication, needs to visit a doctor in town for x-rays or lab work, or if her class schedule must be changed due to illness or injury.

Calling the Health Hut: Should you ever have questions regarding your daughter’s health, please call us directly at the Health Hut. Health Hut phone #: 828-693-9841 Prior to Opening Day, please contact us to discuss any health concerns. For your daughter’s sake, as well as the health of other campers, please do not bring her to camp if she has had

a fever or other illness within 24 hours of Opening Day. Please call the Health Hut to discuss this with us.

Health Forms: Please be sure we have your daughter’s Health Form on file by May 1st! If there are changes after submitting your form, contact the office to update her records.

Medications Campers are not allowed to keep ANY medication in their cabin. Medications brought to camp will be stored and administered by a nurse at the Health Hut. Please bring all medications to Pill Hill at the Health Hut on Opening Day.

• Rx medications: Rx Meds must be in their original bottles with pharmacy labels that include the camper’s name and the correct dosage and instructions for administration OR must be accompanied by a Dr.’s Rx and orders for administration. Our nurses CANNOT accept or administer any medications (pills, liquids or injectables) that are not properly labeled.

• Over the Counter medications: There is no need to bring OTC medicines to camp as we have these at the Health Hut and will administer to your camper if she needs them. If you do choose to send personal OTC medications to camp, they will be kept at the Health Hut and need to be checked in just like a Rx medication on Opening Day. OTC medications also need to be in original bottles that are properly labeled. We cannot administer medications that are not clearly identified.

• Vitamins/Supplements: If you and your physician feel these are necessary during your campers stay, please bring these to the Health Hut in original labeled containers and with a Dr.’s prescription or order for administration.

• Emergency Medications: If you daughter needs to keep a medication with her such as a rescue inhaler for Asthma or an Epi-pen for severe allergic reactions, please check in with a nurse at Pill Hill on Opening Day. Please check the expiration dates on these before bringing to camp.

**Please note: Because we have a very structured schedule, children who are on medication for ADD/ADHD often have a better experience if they stay on their medication while at camp.

Health CareLice: All campers will have their heads checked for lice by a professional service on Opening Day. Any cases found will be treated that day. Parents will be notified regarding the treatment and will be responsible for the cost. Please have your daughter checked (by someone who knows what they are looking for) BEFORE she comes to camp, and let us know if she or anyone in the family has been treated for lice in the 6 months prior to camp. This will help avoid a false diagnosis when she arrives.

Emotional Health (ADHD, anxiety, depression, mood disorders, food issues, etc.): Your daughters’ emotional and mental health is just as important to us as her physical health. We want every camper to be supported and successful while they are here. Please let us know of any concerns or issues that you have been dealing with at home.

Eating Concerns and Disorders: Campers sometimes arrive at camp with eating issues. Focusing on “control” of food and diet in the camp atmosphere is frustrating and can be harmful.

Page 25: handbook · buy a Five Year Ring or Charm. You must place your order no later than May 1, 2018. Order forms for rings and charms will be included with your Online Forms. If you have

23

Should a camper exhibit any signs of an eating disorder, we will contact you immediately and make arrangements for her to go home.

Accident and Medical Insurance Coverage: Greystone provides Accident and Medical Insurance coverage FREE OF CHARGE! This policy (Axis Insurance Company) will be the primary insurance coverage for your camper and will pay for medical expenses, subject to the policy’s limits. To find out more about this policy and what is covered, please visit our Health & Safety information on our website.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us: Margaret Miller, Health Director, [email protected] Jamie Hutchinson, Head Nurse, [email protected]

HOMESICKNESS If you or your daughter are having misgivings, or if she has had consistent difficulties with overnights in the past, please call us and speak to a Director for advice on resolving these issues before she comes to camp. Do not attempt to calm her fears by inferring that she can come home if she does not like camp. This is the #1 reason that many campers are homesick the first days at camp. Parents should never put the burden of this decision on a camper. Never give a child this option before she goes to camp. For more information, please visit the Parents section of our website.

Welcome to Junior Camp!! We are anxiously waiting for Opening Day 2018!

Schedule: At Junior Camp, we pre-schedule classes so that when you arrive we can jump right into camp! You can see a detailed list of classes offered at Junior and choose your classes through your Online Forms.

Laundry: There is no laundry for Junior, so pack enough clothes for 10 days.

Letters: Many parents pre-write letters for the first 4 days of camp. You can drop these off in the mail bins on the Office porch on Opening Day. Please pre-address and stamp envelopes for letters your camper will send from camp.

Swim Check Policy: On Opening Day afternoon, all cabins will have a time at the pool. Campers will take a swim check which consists of being able to tread water for two minutes. If your daughter cannot pass this check, she will only be able to participate in the small slide, if she is taking Waterpark. Campers can retake the swim check during their time at Junior Camp.

If your daughter does not pass, we will work with her to make sure she can pass by the end of the session and then participate in water activities.

The following activities are offered as special additional activities and require an extra fee. To find out more and sign up, please refer to the Forms in your Greystone Account.

RIDINGRiding is an extra activity that campers may choose to take during the summer. We are offering three types of riding:

Hunt Seat Equitation Instruction: As the basis of all disciplines, Hunt Seat Equitation teaches a solid foundation built on strong basic skills. Each camper will be placed in a class with girls of similar skill level and challenged in a safe, uplifting riding environment. At our longer sessions, more experienced riders will have the opportunity to participate in the Horse Show.

Apple Hill Western Trail Ride Experience: June Campers, spend a half-day with friends getting to know all the Apple Hill horses. Campers will have their own horse to love, groom, bathe, and ride out on the trail. Campers will enjoy special activities at the barn and with the horses.

Thunderhead Western Trail Ride Adventure: New last year, this trail option is an opportunity for June and Main campers to enjoy the beautiful Thunderhead property with their horse. This experience is open to girls who have completed 5th grade and older. This is a half-day (with lunch) option where girls will get to spend time caring for their horse, trail riding on mountain trails, playing in the river, and eating lunch by the camp fire.
