100 Year Highlights
4-H friends and families,
As 2018 comes to a close, we are celebrating an awesome 100th year of Hancock County Extension. Our

include the Cool Kids club and Britt Bakers - both meeting afterschool. We offered 53 different camps/
workshops for ages 5 to 18 reaching 703 youth from January—August 2018 in Hancock County. If you have
ideas for workshops please let us know, we are always looking for new ideas!
Be sure to sign up for our Snowflake Sensation and Holly Jolly Holiday Workshops before they get full. Has
your club discussed and explored the 4-H Healthy Living Club Challenge? Be sure to check out this
opportunities and more is in the 4-H Family Newsletter.

Margaret said, “My favorite thing about 4-H is watching kids gain confidence. I’ve seen 4-Hers building skills, especially in communication, and now those 4-Hers are successful grown ups.” She loves that 4-H give kids an opportunity to explore their interests. She spoke highly of the value of 4-H being a safe place where you practice and get comfortable using life skills such as decision making, responsibility, communication, and time management. She loves that volunteering gives her a way to know the community. Hancock County Extension is very grateful for Margaret’s many years of involvement in the various groups she has helped to lead and serve.
Volunteer Spotlight: Margaret Guth
Margaret Guth came into 4-H as an adult with no background being a 4-H member herself. She was a club leader for the Liberty Go Getters for more than 10 years when her kids became active 4-H members. Since retiring as a club leader she helped as a volunteer parent with the Ellery Country Clovers and was an independent 4-Her mentor. She has been helping with the 4-H Afterschool Kids Club for 5 years.

Mock Tournament—Nov. 11th at the GHV Elementary
Join us on Sunday November 11th starting at 2:00 pm to watch what a FIRST LEGO League competition is all about. You will also get to see our Jr FLL Kids in action and see their working model and show me poster.
Teams from Hancock County will come together and get ready to compete in their Regional competitions. During our mock tournament we will see the robots complete missions, see how they will solve the space problems and see how they will work together as a team.
This years challenge is Moon Missions and Into Orbit. Prepare for blast off with FIRST® LEGO® League, break out of your earthly con-straints and go INTO ORBITSM. You and your
FIRST LEGO LEAGUE & JR FIRST LEGO LEAGUE Our Jr FLL teams (K-3rd grade) the LEGO Voyagers, LEGO
crafters, LEGO Robots, LEGO Workers, Ninjago Masters, Brick
Boys and Team LEGO are also
working on ways to learn more
about Mission Moon. They are
looking at what it would take to live
on the moon. The Jr FLL team’s goals are to:
Explore What do you need to know about the Moon to live there? What will you eat and drink? How will you get energy? How will you breath? What will you do for fun? What other problems will you have to solve?
Create and Test a Team Model to show your ideas.
Share Make a show Me Poster, Use it and your Moon base to share what you have learned.
The kids will transport to a place where you make the rules, learn to thrive in a new environment, and explore all that is around you.
Tis the season for Jr. FLL, and FLL competitions. This years
topic for Jr FLL and FLL is Into Orbit and Mission Moon. Our
FLL (4th-8th grade) teams need to solve a problem
concerning life in space and present it to the judges on
tournament day, along with programing
their robots to solve the missions on the
mat. Some space problems the teams are
working on are; how the loss of gravity
effects things, food stortage for astronauts,
atrophy, improving medical kits and doing CPR in space and
more. Jason Lackore, Hancock County Naturalist, was able to
blow up the space lab and give the kids a presentation about
space. Our teams are traveling to compete against other FLL
teams across Iowa. What FIRST LEGO League teams accom-
plish is nothing short of
amazing. It’s fun. It’s
exciting. The skills they
learn will last a lifetime.
They will be competing in
Estherville and Webster
City on December 1st.

4-H Healthy Living Club Challenge - Sign up today!
EARN “MILES” FOR HEALTHY CLUB CHOICES
A new challenge from the state has been organized to engage 4-H clubs across the state to incorporate Healthy Living practices during their monthly club meetings. Each meeting, clubs have 3 challenge topic areas that they can complete to earn miles in the Race Across Iowa.
Offering water as the main beverage
Having fruits or vegetables as a snack option
Organizing structured physical activity
From November through the month of June, clubs will have 8 months to Race Across Iowa on our 1,400 mile route
through all 20 regions. Each of the challenge areas earns them an amount of “miles”. Periodically, a Bonus Challenge will be revealed for clubs to engage in to earn extra miles. Check out the webpage for more details and resources to help accomplish the varying challenge areas. The Top 5 clubs in the state accumulating the most miles will be recognized at the Iowa State Fair in August! By accomplishing challenges each month the club will earn “miles” - each club will submit a monthly tracker online, it is a very short and simple survey. This survey will showcase which challenges they completed and then totaling the miles that
they earned for that month. The Race Across Iowa map, connects all of our 20 regions and totals 1,400 miles! This may seem daunting, but if clubs average 1-2 challenges a month while also completing a bo-nus challenge at some point during the year, they will find their club successfully reaching the end of the route. Does it sound like we have a blast doing hands on learning at 4-H Afterschool Kids club? We definitely do!! Watch for our spring semester registration to be available after the first of the year. We meet on Mondays at GHV and on Tuesdays at WH for a set number of consecutive weeks in a row right after school.
Our 3rd-4th grader 4-H ASK club was all about Exploring bugs this semester. We learned that insects have six legs, 3 body segments, and usually a four stage life cycle. We invented our own insects, explored arachnids, engi-neered our own insect habitats, examined our ant farm, and discovered all about bees from 4-Her Keifer Carlson!! Each week we also say our 4-H pledge, record our meeting minutes, and practice being positive 4-Her role models.
