Breast Cancer Awareness Camp Held in HFZAWorldwide, one woman is found to have breast cancer in every 24 seconds and one woman dies from the condition every 68 seconds.

On October 30, 2014 an event aimed to raise awareness about breast cancer was held at the Hamriyah Free Zone

Authority (HFZA) auditorium.

The non-profit initiative was organised by HFZA to raise awareness about breast cancer and educate women about the disease. As part of the event, organisers distributed educational booklets which illustrated self-detection methods.

“Health studies indicate that the highest number of breast cancer cases appears in women above 40, and 64 per cent of cases in the UAE are detected at advanced stages of the diseases. Breast cancer is curable if detected early enough. So we want to focus on the importance of regular self- examination as a precaution against breast cancer,” said Saud Al Mazrouei, director of HFZA and Sharjah Airport International Free Zone.

Breast cancer has four stages of severity defined by the prevalence and size of

the lymph nodes and tumours. If caught at stage one, the chance of survival is between 95 and 100 per cent.

The camp aimed to highlight the importance of regular screening and self-examinations. From the age of 20,

women should carry out monthly self-examinations and visit a GP every three years. After the age of 40, they should have a mammogram every two years.

Signs and symptoms of breast cancer include lumps, unusual swelling and a change in the size and shape of the breast. The campaign also advised on preventive lifestyle measures women can take to reduce the risk of breast cancer. Studies reveal some risk factors such as late menopause, taking hormones, such as birth control, for a long time, alcohol and smoking.

“We conducted this camp as one of our main CSR activities. The camp aimed to increase the health awareness of the community,” says Al Mazrouei

Breast cancer is the second-biggest killer of women after cardiovascular disease. Newspaper reports last year claimed that there were more than 54 deaths in the UAE’s capital Abu Dhabi due to breast cancer, the youngest being only 24. Half the women found to have breast cancer were between 49 and 54.

Teamed up with Sharjah Airport International Free Zone (SAIF ZONE), Zulekha Hospital and Joyalukkas, the free medical camp was organised by Hamriyah She-Q Club - a non–profit forum of HFZA.

Saud Al Mazrouei, Director of HFZA, T.V. Ramesh, Director-Finance and Strategic Planning (HFZA); Sonia John Paul, Executive Director, Joyalukkas, Taher Shams, President of Zulekha Healthcare Group and Ananth Swaminathan addressed the attendees.
