FIRST Lego League Regional Tournament On Saturday, November 4th, 24 teams for 9-14 year olds arrived at Crittenden Middle School in Newport News for the 11th Annual Peninsula FIRST Lego League Regional Tournament, sponsored by AIAA HRS. Volunteers and teams started arriving bright and early on the 4th. HRS volunteers filled roles as judges, referees, general volunteers and tournament director and without their help the tournament would not have been possible.

This year's competition was called “Hydro Dynamics” and it challenged teams to learn about the human water cycle – the ways that people find, transport, use, and dispose of water in order to meet a specific need or desire. The theme drove the challenges for the robots, having kids design, build and program their robots to repair broken pipes, flush a toilet, collect rain water, turn on a faucet, plant a flower, put out a fire and many more. Teams also were judged in three areas including robot design, core values and on their research project, in which they had to pick a problem with the human water cycle and propose a new solution or an improvement of a current solution. All of the teams had a great time and are looking forward to next year.

AIAA HRS had 11 volunteers, including Karen Berger, Amanda Chou, Manuel Diaz, Ed Dickes, John Lin, Andrew Lovejoy, Michelle Lynde, Brian Mason, Pedro Paredes, Patrick Shea and Carol Wieseman. The teams had nothing but good things to say about their judges and referees.

Some coach comments this year include: “Please tell all your volunteers from yesterday's tournament that we truly appreciate the time they give this league. The tournament yesterday was so fun and well organized. Thank you for the excellent job you all always do. You give so much to our community and the kids we all love, I truly, truly, truly appreciate it. You are truly making a difference in these kids' lives and you all do it on your own time. Thank you could never express the gratitude I feel to know you and to participate in such a life-changing experience for kids.” – Coach of The Magically Energized Lightning Waffle Bunnies!

“I just wanted to thank you for the outstanding experience you all presented to our students. The feedback I received was very impressive. You all delivered an outstanding program and I appreciate all your hard work.” – STEM Specialist for Newport News Public Schools

In addition to helping at Newport News, a number of AIAA members helped at the Norfolk Regional Tournament held on November 11th at Norview High School. This tournament also had 24 teams and would not have been possible without the help of the AIAA members who filled key roles like judges and referees, including Carol Bauer, Steve Bauer, Karen Berger, Jenna Eppink, Andrew Lovejoy and Brian Mason. Thanks and I look forward to seeing all of you next year!

Lunch and Learn with Tom Strom

The HRS Career & Professional Development (C&PD) Committee sponsored a Lunch and Learn program with Tom Strom at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) on November 8, 2017. Mr. Strom, a contract employee working in the Safety Critical Avionics branch at NASA Langley, has worked for more than 60 years in the airplane business. His work history includes military service, project management for Boeing, and successfully forming two different private companies. Tom’s career interview was recorded live at the NASA Langley Media Studio in late August of 2017. The video-taped interview was played at the luncheon. In the interview, Tom recounted his more than 70 years of experiences in the workforce. He is still working at NASA Langley at the age 93. One kernel of advice he gave to others: “don’t be afraid to tackle any task because you don’t know where it may lead you in the future; and don’t be afraid to make mistakes because your greatest learning can come from mistakes.” Tom said he doesn’t plan to retire as long as he can do the work required. At the conclusion of the taped interview, Tom answered a number of questions from co-workers who attended the luncheon. The group presented Mr. Strom with a plaque celebrating his long service and a birthday cake celebrating his 93rd birthday. For those that wanted to attend but could not, the interview is posted on the AIAA HRS web site in the collection of Career & Professional Development Seminars at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_5sipZVhBw&feature=youtu.be

Call for Submissions for Young Professional Paper CompetitionEach year the Young Professionals Committee of the AIAA Hampton Roads Section holds a paper competition to recognize outstanding on-the-job technical accomplishments of our young members. To be eligible, the first-authored paper must have been either published or accepted for publication in an archival and refereed publication in the past 6 years (such as the Journal of Fluid Mechanics) and originally submitted while the first author was an AIAA member under the age of 35. Please note that papers that are published in conference proceedings are not eligible for this contest and that papers previously entered in this competition, which did not receive first, second, or third place can be re-submitted this year. The award for the winning paper, judged on technical merit, clarity, and relevance by an independent reviewing committee, will be presented at the Section Awards Banquet in May 2018. The winner will receive a certificate and a FREE one-year membership to AIAA, and his or her name will be engraved on a plaque permanently on display in the H.J.E. Reid Center at NASA Langley. Prizes for second and third place will also be given. Young professional members interested in participating in this year’s paper competition will submit a digital copy of the manuscript, the publication acceptance letter, and author information (including date of birth and AIAA membership number). Submissions for this competition will be collected electronically via an online submission website. Access to this website will be provided to all HRS members by January 2018. Eligible submissions must be received by Thursday, February 1, 2018. If you have any questions, please contact Michelle Lynde ([email protected], 757-864-9097) or Vanessa Aubuchon ([email protected], 757-864-7220).

AIAA Honors Leavitt with Sustained Service Award AIAA honors Laurence D. (Larry) Leavitt with Sustained Service Award. The award was announced in the November issue of Aerospace America (https://aerospaceamerica.aiaa.org/bulletin/november-2017-aiaa-bulletin/). The Sustained Service Award ward is presented to recognize an individual’s sustained, significant service and contributions to the AIAA. Only twenty members may receive this Award each year. The citation of the award for Larry reads: “For sustained, significant service over 42 years across local, regional, and national levels with emphasis on technical committees, outreach, and recognition of deserving colleagues.”

Hampton Roads Section The Hampton Roads Section (HRS) of AIAA, which has a membership of nearly 1000 out of more than 30,000 total for AIAA, represents geographically southern Virginia and southern West Virginia. The membership is made up of employees and contractors of NASA Langley Research Center, aerospace industry professionals, retirees, as well as student chapters at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) in Hampton, and Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. The Hampton Roads Section actively participates in AIAA national initiatives and programs. Local programs are held throughout the year and cater to the needs of the entire membership including young professionals and retirees. The Section annually awards scholarships to graduating high school seniors planning careers related to aerospace engineering. The Section has a very active program in pre-college education. Membership Information In an effort to reach all HRS members we are updating our e-mail mailing list once a month. To help us reach you with news and information on upcoming programs, please verify that your contact information is accurate in the AIAA database, especially your e-mail address. This can be done by accessing your account at the AIAA website, www.aiaa.org under the topic “My Information.” Something as simple as an e-mail “typo” could prevent you from receiving Section information. Student members should keep their record current, especially seniors, to take advantage of AIAA’s offer of one free year of Professional membership (2nd year 1/2 price). AIAA encourages students to transition into professional members and to become active in AIAA at the Section, Regional & National levels in order to take advantage of all the benefits AIAA has to offer. HRS is offering free program admission to new AIAA members joining at any of the HRS-sponsored events! For more information, please email your inquiries to [email protected].

New Members Discount New professional members can receive a $10 discount if they join AIAA at a Section meeting. They just need to fill out a paper application form and send it to: Emily Springer, American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics, 1801 Alexander Bell Drive, Reston, Virginia 20191-4344; or email a PDF version of the application form to Ms. Springer at [email protected].
