Background

Our aim in holding the Special Needs Information Days is to give families with children who have special needs, and practitioners who support those families, the opportunity to gather information about advice and services available across the county. The events are free to visitors and exhibitors.

The days are widely advertised in the months leading up to the events, via schools and early years settings, exhibitors, voluntary organisations, colleagues in Children’s Services, doctors’ surgeries, libraries, newsletters and press releases (see attached Appendix A, flyer advertising the 2012 information day).

This year’s event

This was the 14th year of the Parent Partnership Service and Contact a Family jointly organising a Special Needs Information Day, after taking a break in 2011. In the main hall were a record 47 exhibitors from the voluntary, commercial and statutory sectors. As well as information gathering, both parents and exhibitors used the day as a networking opportunity, meeting and discussing issues with other families, exhibitors and professionals.

Thanks go to Mr Giant, Honeypot Playbus, Jiggy Wrigglers and Caterpillar Crafts for providing entertainment for the children during the day. Visitors were also able to take time out during the event by stopping at the café for hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, cakes and snacks.

Attached to this report is a list of exhibitors (Appendix B).

Workshops and Talks

This year, 10 workshops and talks were held throughout the day, on which visitors could book free of charge (see Appendix C)

Their support was extremely valuable, and they played a huge part in making the event run smoothly.

Lastly, the Parent Partnership Service wishes to extend their gratitude again to Cay Byford of Contact a Family for organising the event with us. Sadly next year’s event will be the last one for Cay, and we shall miss her greatly.

Interactive workshop: Content:Primitive Childhood Reflexes and their effect on development

If you wish to try the exercises for yourself during this workshop, please be prepared to lie on floor mats, and we recommend you wear loose and comfortable clothing

The Primitive Childhood reflexes are present in all of us to assist the baby to move through the various stages of development. When these reflexes get stuck the child is unable to move smoothly through a developmental stage. The workshop will explain some of the reflexes and how they work followed by a chance to see and then experience some simple movements to help to integrate the reflexes. This workshop is based on Rhythmic Movement Training, the work of Dr Harald Blomberg, a Swedish doctor and specialist in childhood development and special needs.

Led by:Irene Lock, Deal with Stress Irene is a Rhythmic Movement Training

instructor and provider. She trained with Dr Harald Blomberg the originator of this programme. Irene is also a Brain Gym© instructor and former teacher.

Barbara has been working with children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs for over 15 years in primary and secondary school settings.As a Specialist Teacher Adviser for Communication and Language she is part of a multidisciplinary team and works closely with Speech and Language Therapists to support secondary mainstream secondary schools in Hampshire to meet the needs of pupils with SLCN.
