Miss Pulane Baloyi, Soul city spokesperson told Hammanskraal News that they (Soul City) intervene

with rural communities on life challenges in general. She voiced that people have a wrong conception that Soul City caters for people in Johannesburg only. She stressed that her institution concentrates on communities that are in need. She explained that they do health promotions through drama series, messages and edutainment. Pulane added that there is a good interrelation between Soul City and other government departments to ease communicating the message to the people.Pulane further said that they have an integrated school health program to uplift the health status of the citizens of this country. She explained that Soul City is a non-profi t organization and that they depend entirely on funders who prioritize for them. She explained that people should rather not take Soul City to be Gauteng base as it concentrates on the needy communities. She further explained that they intended delivering services to salvage pride and self-esteem in the young and upcoming girl children. She said that they would further consider image maintenance in these girls to become better citizens and mothers.Pulane relayed that the needed to focus on the future as well as their abilities and capabilities. She said that the girls have to lead by example, go out there and make a difference. Some of the girls referred to poverty as a contributory factor towards younger girls going for sugar daddies. They cited peer group pressure, internet use, reliance on money. They deliberated that charity begins at home and urged others to have self-discipline. The gathering said that they needed to confront the odds of life to succeed. These girls pleaded with parents to be closer to them for fi rst hand advice against relationships with older men. They said that such relationships bring a disturbance in their studies and that money is addictive and true

root of all evil.Bafana Chauke advised the young girls to accept poverty but not allow it to drag them down. He further voiced the sadness of getting marred with a child. They were further warned not to become practice fi elds for grown men and urged to take charge of their lives. They were told to dream big, have self-control, be responsible and shape their own future. They were further told that changes do not come

overnight and that they should be patient. The gathering was told to use technology for the good that it is intended for. Bafana reiterated that the same technology can be detrimental and detractive. He voiced that child headed families are also a target to older men who become sugar daddies to these young girls. He concluded that these men are therefore not assets to their communities and that these girls should learn to protect their siblings.

Different media throughout the world bear news about rape, abuse of any kind as well as ill treatment directed to the womenfolk of this country. The cases stated are rife in the country and every court of law surely handles these cases on daily basis. Mmametlhake residents and high school leaners from the area gathered at high school to introduce a young woman’s league. Soul City took to the said area to introduce a Young women’s league to combat and help to weed out the problem.

Service delivery is the key to the community’ s hearts. Ward 75 in Temba is a well-known ward in Hammanskraal after being in the spot light with huge fi ghts and service delivery protests. However the community of ward 75 seems to enjoy the work of the counselor whom they choose as their leader. After the huge fi ghts that happened in ward 75 in the previous months things seems to gel between the counselor and the community. Later last year towards early this year some of the community members where in the spot light after making attempts at stopping the project. Jane Makgato counselor of ward 75 which she held the meeting in Chris Hani and said to the community “ I can promise you that in my ward there will be no area that has no service delivery, not in my term. I’m saying this to you my community as I’m here to tell you that on the 17th of this month I will be handing over another project in the community. I promise you that a place called Phophola in my ward will be no more as Eskom will be starting with the project of electricity in this very month. “However the counselor said to the community that block G area that has been there for a decade now will also get electricity.

However Makgato who is working her heart out to impress the community introduced the LDO and CLO of the project right in front of the community. Meanwhile she left the community hanging and surprised - she asked the LDO of the project to prove that she does know the community that well, when she asked the LDO to elect ten people from the community whom she knows suffer. However the hard ever pleased community of Chris Hani complained of the criteria or method of hiring which left the counselor speechless and out of ideas. The community showed the anger that they are tired of cat and mouse games that’s been played by the counselor and the so called claiming chairperson of ANC youth league in ward 75. It was again them who nearly destroyed the meeting that was all about the electricity project that will be in the area but the community managed the situation well. On the time of print Makgato was still going to confi rm when Eskom will install electricity in Block G as dates has been confi rmed for phophola. “I will be meeting with Eskom offi cials on the 10th to discuss the fi nal dates as I have been waiting for the plan and aerial map from Eskom.” She also highlighted that installing electricity in Block G does not mean that they cannot be removed in that area. I can also confi rm that people will get RDP houses. “I can also confi rm to you that this project will not take longer than two months.”

Communities are always encouraged to ensure they also contribute in fi ghting poverty in the areas and stop depending on government. Two pensioners in Hammanskraal are adhering to that as they have started a food garden near Apies River. Johanna Diretse (60) and Rebecca Matlala (63) have planted vegetables at the land near the river. The duo maintains that their major problem is that they don’t have water and they cannot apply for the water tap as they solemnly depend on their pension money.

Diretse told the Hammanskraal News crew that they started the project near Temba sewage sites about three years

ago however water have always been their challenge. We were told to move from that area after the construction started extending the sewage and moved to the current location said Diretse. She said that they are very grateful to the construction company as they sometimes deliver water. “However the water they are providing are not enough for our vegetations we need more” she elaborated. She further said that they have approached the department of land and agriculture for assistance but they were told they only help those with bigger land.“With the vegetables we are planting we are able to feed our families though it is a challenge because sometimes we have no electricity because most people don’t buy our products because sometimes we sell less than R50.00 per day and sometimes R10.00 which

We need help with water for our food garden

is not enough for two of us” maintains Diretse. She told Hammanskraal News that they also need more assistance from community members who are committed in working in vegetable gardens. “The challenge we have always encountered is that people don’t want to extend the garden when we accept them and it is too small they just want to water the plants” explained Diretse.Rebecca Matlala (63) one of the participants said that the type of soil they plant in is mud so it uses more water and that affects some of the plants. Lack of water affects mostly green beans and carrots as they draw more water so they don’t grow properly explained Matlala. “We also lack garden tools such as hoes, fork, spade and rake” she said. Matlala and Diretse said that they would like to grow their garden

bigger and trade with big wholesalers. They said that they would also like to do chicken farming in the near future. They plead with local business communities to help them with equipments or maybe donate seeds. The two oldies told Hammanskraal News that their other challenge is that their garden fence is bit small so they use tree branches for insuring that their animals are not eaten by the livestock. “ We use thorny branches to keep the goats and cattle from destroying our vegetables. We were given donation of wires and metal poles but they were stolen said Diretse. If we can have more people who can join us many of their families might benefi t because unity is power and I believe we can produce more vegetables” sh e said.

Most people associate liquor traders with bad things however this month some learners’ lives were changed by these business owners. Concerned Tshwane Liquor Traders (CTLT) which consists of liquor traders around Tshwane, donated pairs of school shoes to 19 Phalesane learners at Suurman Village in Hammmanskraal. President of CTLT Oupa Mthombeni said that they need to support the learners “because some of their parents are our customers so this initiative, it’s a plough back to our different communities.”

Learners were also given shoe polish, soap and also pampered with snacks including sweets. They were also told not

to allow their parents or neighbours to send them to buy alcohol or cigarettes at shebeens as they are still young and it is against the law. Mthombeni further told Hammanskraal News that they don’t have money but they need to support education in or communities. “As liquor traders we need to be responsible and take care of the needy children so that they can have a better education” said Mthombeni.Mthombeni said that they are not going to tolerate learners who, after completing their exams, engage into liquor in what they call pens’down celebrations. ”We have strictly discussed with members of CTLT not to sell liquor to learners during pens’down

celebration as they are still minors and we don’t want to destroy their future” . He said that learners must focus on their studies and not on liquor or drugs. Mthombeni also wished success to learners with their final year exams and said they must take their education serious as it is the only weapon which can shape their future.Phalesane Principal Mmiha Manne told Hammanskraal News that they are very happy and humbled by the support they

have received from liquor traders of CTLT Hammanskraal branch. Manne further said that some learners had to come to school barefooted while some wear. He encourages other local business owners and parents to support schools in their areas. Manne pleads with parents who are employed at big companies to try and market their children’s schools for support in order to improve their childrens education.Hammanskraal News spoke to some of the

learners who received pairs of shoes, one said that he is very happy as he never had any because he stays with his unemployed grandmother and mother and they cannot afford to buy him a pair of shoes. He further said that he wants to tell CTLT members that he loves them and want to thank them for the shoes and sweets he received. The CTLT Chairperson Michael Ledwaba mostly known as Bro Biza of Chris Hani said that he was touched by the emotions the

learners showed. “I am very happy to see the learners smiling because some of their parents cannot afford to buy them school shoes and uniform” he said. He said that they would like other business owners to partner with them so that more learners can benefit from the project as we lack funds and we hope to help more schools in Hammanskraal and the surrounding areas.

Government tries hard to ensure that they provide the public with proper infrastructure which will improve their daily lives.

Less than five years ago one bridge was built while anoter one was revamped by the De-

partment of Public Works in part-nership with South African National Defense Force (SANDF) through the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) are being vandalized. Thieves have already destroyed two wooden blocks of the Tshwane Bridge near the area known as Tem-ba beach. The bridge enables resi-dents to cross from or toRockville, Temba,Hammanskraal Station, Por-tion 9, Marokolong and it is also used by learners daily. Some residences raised their con-cern saying that the bridge can result in injuries to residents that pass over the bridge. “This is taxpayers money which is being wasted by someone who I believe is not employed, which would be their reasons for destroying it “.The second bridge which fell to the hands of the “scrapmetal addicts” is Temeteme Bridge which links Leb-oneng and Babelegi Industrial sites.Thabo Tshabalala who grazes cat-tle around the bushes said that he

doesn’t see the reason why a person could do such evil deeds. He further said that it’s dangerous for the pri-mary school learners as they might fall into the Apies River. Hammanskraal News spoke to one of Lebonengs businessman Elias Sepuru and he said that the bridge really affects his service of selling electricity coupons. Some of his cus-tomers reside in Ramotse and Ma-rokolong. Some of the bridge users are Selang Primary School and they are still children, the bridge might be dangerous as they are very playful. “ Other learners are forced to use the bridge as their guardians cannot af-ford the travelling fare” emphasized Sepuru. The metal handrails which have been stolen were very protec-tive. The thugs have also vandalized sidebars of Babelegi. The sidebars were slowly removed by unknown people now both sidebars are no-where to be found some allege this was caused by scrap addicts who took them to the scrapyard. Hammanskraal News spoke to Ward 74 Councillor Jabu Sibaya about the issue of Temba Bridge being vandalized and he said that though the bridge was built by the Gauteng province maintenance must be done by the City of Tshwane (CoT). Si-baya said that they have received reports from community members and he has since consulted the CoT

and he is still waiting for their re-sponse. Our efforts to contact Ward 75 Jane Makgatho were unfruitful as we contacted her but her phone was on voicemail.

About twenty fi ve young boys’ from Kanana village have joined a new soccer team called Kanana united football club. They meet during the week for a soccer practice from fi ve o’clock until half past six in the evenings. These boys aged between 12 years and 17 years old, seemed very determined during their practice and some even said they want to see themselves play at a national level (premier soccer league or national fi rst division). Founder and the couch of the club, Mr. Jones Marakalla said this is a newly formed soccer team, which has only been in existence for three weeks now. “We see more and more boys coming to join us and some have real soccer talent, and I believe that if they keep the very same spirit within them they will reach their goal which is to play at a national level and that is also one of my desires for them”, said Marakalla. He further explained that this is another way to keep them away from the use of substance like nyaope and alcohol. On Saturday 01 November 2014, the team had a soccer match challenge from Mentor FC which also originates from Kanana village. The game

ended in a draw of one goal each. “We then went to penalties and we won the game with fi ve goals with mentor FC scoring four goals”, said Marakalla. Marakalla conveyed his many thanks to the parents for allowing their children to come and be part of his football club. He said at the moment they are in need of a soccer jersey, and the one they are using is borrowed from other soccer teams.Jabu Ntuli a 15 year old midfi elder and Sphiwe Ndlovu 13 years old striker, had the same views about being part of kanana FC. They are both aspiring football stars, with Ntuli wanting to see himself play at a level where Steven Pinaar is playing (former Bafana Bafana midfi elder and captain) and as for Ndlovu his dream is to see himself play like George Lebese (kaizer chiefs striker.Ntuli thanked the coach for the opportunity given and said “I encourage other youngsters like me to come and be part of the team or, if they have other talents in other sports besides soccer they must just pursue them”. Ndlovu said the soccer practice does not distract them from their school work. The team will have many more games to come over the coming weekends.

It seems as if the death of South Africa’s number one goalkeeper, the late Senzo Meyiwa, has not gone unnoticed, as South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan and fellow countrymen have officially launched the Gun Free South Africa campaign at Safa’s Nasrec headquarters. Jordaan said they wanted all the weapons confiscated during the campaign to be melted down so that they could be used to make a statue of Senzo Meyiwa which will be placed at the entrance to the Safa headquarters. He further added that the campaign was not only about Senzo, but also about other 17 people who were shot on the same day Meyiwa was killed. Former SuperSport United FC player Peter “Fire” Kgobane added that youngsters are

now afraid to realize their dreams, because criminals have gained the upper hand. He further cited that, within a short space of time of Meyiwa’s death, the house of BIDVest Wits FC midfielder Sibusiso Vilakazi’s parents was ransacked by criminals, who looted valuable items at gunpoint while the unsuspecting football maestro was asleep on the premises. These incidents have driven Safa to plead with the public to hand in all unlicensed firearms. According to a media report issued by Gun Free South Africa, South African has more than 300 000 unlicensed firearm. The campaign is long overdue, as trigger-happy criminals are shooting randomly, disregarding the lives of innocent and law-abiding citizens. However, the Gun Free South Africa campaign will be resurrected too late to prevent the senseless killing of Meyiwa.
