Working with donated fabric, the squares are stitched together in coordinating colors and pat- terns with the only criteria being that they measure 60 x 80”. “The mission isn’t fussy about how they look, but our ladies are,” said Kane. Collectively, around 1,400 quilts were packed into a large truck that was headed to the Lutheran World Relief warehouse in Baltimore, Maryland. “We have a spacious parking lot and good storage, so we’re hoping to serve as the drop off in years to come,” said Kane. In 2014, Lutheran World Relief sent 408,245 quilts to 19 countries, including Armenia, Iraq, Jordan, Nicaragua, Philippines, Serbia and Tanzania. The organization focuses on long term solutions to poverty and emergency operations, such as helping with recovery ef- forts after the Nepal earthquake. “The quilts go to people who have nothing and fulfill a basic need,” said Kane. In addition to being a cozy, clean bed cover, the quilts are used as a baby car- rier, tied around a mother’s back; a market display, spread on the ground and piled with vegetables; a sack for transporting those goods to market; a sunshade; or a shawl. “Our hope is that the recipients will feel the love of Christ through the warmth of our quilts,” said Kane. Top, Carolyn Hurlbutt (left) and Lois Kane hold one of the quilts the Quilts for Christ volunteer group creates for those in need around the globe. “It’s a great crew and we work really well together,” said Kane. Bottom photo: Before the quilts are picked up by Lutheran World Relief, they are laid on the church pews at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hilton and blessed. While the group makes the majority of quilts for mission efforts overseas, occasionally they will give one to someone who is ill or in need locally. The quilts are never sold. G. Griffee photos.

For nearly a decade, a group of about 15 volunteers have been churning out over 60 handmade

quilts a year and then turning them over to Lutheran World Relief so that they can be sent overseas. Handmade quilts have long been collected and cherished - and are pricey to purchase - but these wom-en think nothing of creating these

works of art, boxing them up and donating them to people around the world.

“It’s like an old-fashioned quilt-ing bee,” said Lois Kane, who heads up the Quilts for Christ group. Volunteers work on the squares at home and then the quilts are assembled during two monthly meetings. “We have a meeting in the afternoon and then one in the evening for those who work during the day,” said Kane.

Working with donated fabric, the squares are stitched together in coordinating colors and pat-terns with the only criteria being that they measure 60 x 80”. “The mission isn’t fussy about how they look, but our ladies are,” said Kane. Sheets are purchased for the backing and huge rolls of fiber-fill for the filling.

Before the finished quilts are boxed up, a dedication ceremony is held during which all of the quilts are draped over the church pews and blessed.

The Kiwanis Club of Brockport sponsored this year’s “Read Around the World” program at the Seymour Li-brary. Students in Brockport elementary grades kinder-garten through fifth were invited to participate in a book-mark contest which was judged by library staff and mem-bers of the Kiwanis Club. From the designs submitted, winners for each grade level were chosen and the winning designs printed and distributed to library patrons. There were 170 entries in this year’s contest.

On the day the winners are announced, all students re-ceive a soft cover book and the winners receive a hard cov-er book. All books are appropriate to the students’ ages. The Kiwanis Club then sponsors an ice cream social which this year was enjoyed by 200 students and parents.

This year’s winners were: Kindergarten and first - grade - Jose Angel Vazquez III, second and third grade - Jose-phine Belde and fourth and fifth grade - Laura Bishop.

Hamlin-Clarkson Herald - May 10, 2015 3Help Fill the Bus for H-P Food Shelf

The Hilton Central Schools Teachers Association is sponsoring their first Care Day on Saturday, May 16. A major part of the day is the collection of non-perishable food items to benefit the Hilton-Parma Food Shelf. On Saturday, May 16, a Hilton district school bus will be parked outside of the Hilton Tops market from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. to collect food. Each district school began col-lecting items on May 4. The HCSTA goal? Fill the Bus with healthy food to then stock the shelves of the Hilton

Food Shelf. Hilton teachers will also volunteer their time on the

16th with a variety of community organizations. Area churches, Hilton East, Parma Public Library and differ-ent areas of Parma Town Park will benefit from the efforts of district teachers. Several area businesses including Green Acre Farms and Nursery, Tops and Wegmans are providing donations.

Hospice of Orleans volunteers recognizedMary Anne Fischer, Executive Director, addressed a

crowd of around a hundred at the Hospice of Orleans an-nual organizational meeting and volunteer recognition event April 30 at the Medina United Methodist Church.

Fischer applauded the work of the Hospice volunteers and reported that in 2014, more than 150 volunteers contributed over 6,800 hours to the Hospice mission of providing comfort, compassion and expertise to Orleans County residents facing serious illness. She attributed a cost savings of over $110,000 last year to volunteer in-volvement. “Our mission would be impossible without you – our volunteers.”

Fisher also detailed key accomplishments of 2014. These included implementing changes in employee medical and dental coverage, evaluation of the agency’s cost structure and saving over $350 in postage alone with increased use of email and online volunteer scheduling. “Hospice of Or-leans has grown from an average daily census of 5 to 17,” she reported.

Agency priorities for 2015 include implementing the new Pet Peace of Mind program, strengthening the in-frastructure of the agency to ensure its long term viabil-ity, investigating a group purchasing program with other area hospice programs, and continuing to educate our community about the benefits of hospice.

Don Algeo received Hospice’s Volunteer of the Year Award. Volunteer Coordinator Christine Fancher noted that “Don is always willing to help. He volunteers at the Residence four or more hours a week and goes to a pa-tient’s home and prepares meals twice a week.” Algeo also serves on the Hospice of Orleans Board of Directors.

Jerome Pawlak received the Mary Janet Sahukar Award, named for Hospice of Orleans’ founding director. The award recognizes a community member who under-stands, embraces and supports the organization’s mission in sacrificial ways. “Jerome always says ‘yes’ when we ask if we can sell bouquets at his Save-a-Lot Stores or ask for any other assistance.” said Mary Anne Fischer as she presented the award. Jerome told the group that his father had been a supporter of Hospice since its inception and that he is proud to carry on that tradition.

Merrill Grinnell Funeral Home received the Hospice Business/Civic Award for their role in developing and sup-porting the Classic Car Show for the past two years.

A Special Recognition Award was presented to Leon-ard Oakes Estate Winery for their many contributions

to fundraising for Hospice. Wendy Wilson accepted the award for the Winery. Her voice filled with emotion, as she said, “I can’t thank Hospice enough for taking care of one of our long time, much loved employees this past year. Two of our employees are receiving services now. Hospice staff has been incredible! Hospice has been near and dear to our family and we are happy to support them in any way we can.”

John Girvin was honored for completion of his term on the Hospice of Orleans Board of Directors. Lynn Short, former owner of Arjuna Florist, and Pamela Reamer, pro-fessor of Nursing at SUNY Brockport, were elected to serve two year terms on the Board of Directors. The Board had previously elected Dennis Piedimonte, owner of JP’s Farm Market in Holley, to a three year term.

Entering its fifth season, Challenger Baseball offers area youngsters ages 5 to 18 who have a physical or developmental disabilities the chance to take the field to play ball. Over the years, the Kiwanis Club of Brockport has supported the program through donations to help supply shirts, hats and equipment. Above, Kiwanis Club members present a check to Challenger Baseball organizer Mike Meyers to help with this year’s program. Challenger Baseball participants learn the fundamentals of baseball as well as aspects of teamwork and sharing. Every participant bats and plays the field. Provided photo.

The Poppy Program important recognition

Each year during the month of May, American Legion Auxiliary members distribute red crepe paper poppies in exchange for donations. The donations assist disabled veterans, their families, VA hospitals and starting this year active military in need of assistance.

The poppy became a symbol of the sacrifice of lives in war and represented the hope that none had died in vain. The poppies are made by disabled veterans.

Look for auxiliary members around the village of Spen-cerport and in other towns and villages. Wear your poppy on Memorial Day, and throughout the month of May.

B-B 2015 HOBY participants named

Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminars provide sophomore students the opportunity to meet many leaders of the community from various sectors such as business, technology, education, government, arts, and science. Through intense but informal panel discussions, HOBY participants get a realistic look at their nation, its people and their own role in the world community.

This year, Clare Fraser, daughter of Mary and Ed-ward Fraser, was selected as the Byron-Bergen High School “HOBY Ambassador,” with Adam Walter, son of Terri and Philip Walter, selected as alternate. Clare and Adam, together with sophomores around the country, are selected based on a variety of criteria such as leader-ship ability, sensitivity to others, communication skills, community service, etc. Clare will attend the seminar June 5-7 at the University of Rochester. The funding for Clare to attend this program was provided by the Byron-Bergen S.T.E.P. Boosters.

Brockport celebrates Erie Canal opening with weekend of eventsby Kristina Gabalski

The Erie Canal is filled once again and spring will be officially welcomed in the Village of Brockport next weekend during the annual Low Bridge High Water Canal Opening Festival.

The event is set for May 14 through 16 - slightly later than in years past - and will include an all-new Craft Beer Big Tent event featuring local craft beverages, sig-nature eats and live music.

The celebration begins Thursday, May 14 at 7 p.m. at the Morgan Manning House with Tom Grasso, president of the New York Canal Society. Grasso has been a popular part of the festival since it be-gan and this year will speak about “New and Exciting Projects for the NYS Canal System.”

The Local Craft Beer Big Tent event is set for Friday, May 15, from 5 to 11 p.m. on Water Street. The event will benefit Bring Rowing to Brockport, Camp Abili-ties Brockport and Camp Good Days.

Tasting tickets are $15 in advance and are available at www.tentevent.event-brite.com, the Brockport Village Hall and the Stoneyard Brewing Company. Tasting tickets are $20 at the door. ID is required and minors must be accompanied by an adult. Five dollar general admission is also available.

A dozen local craft beverage makers including beer, wine and hard cider will

take part. Brockport’s Stoneyard Brewing Company is among the Tent Event partici-pants.

“They will be making a special Low Bridge High Water brew for the occasion,” Brockport Mayor Margay Blackman says.

Restaurants providing Signature Eats include Jimmy Z’s, Barber’s Grill & Tap-room, 58 Main, Union Street Eatery, Coleen’s Cafe’, Amora’s, Java Junction, and Calios.

Big Eyed Phish - The Dave Matthews Tribute Band and the Mike Melito Quartet will provide live music.

Saturday, May 16 events include the Canal Opening Ceremony and Awards at 10 a.m. at the Barge Stage located at the Welcome Center on Water Street. Addi-tional Saturday events at the Barge Stage include a rowing demo, kayak rentals, the Golden Eagle String Band, the Pizza Olympics at noon; Yoga on the Barge and Bollywood Dance Mania.

The Barge Charge 5K Fun Run will be-gin at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Corbett Park on the corner of Smith Street and Clark Street Registration and packet pick-up be-gins at 9 a.m.

Applications are available at the Brock-port Village Hall, 49 State Street, or sign up at www.yellowjacketracing.com. The race benefits the Sgt. Clifton Rife II Me-morial Scholarship.

Village of BrockportTRASH COLLECTION

NOTICEAs students prepare to move out at the end of the year, re-fuse left behind is an issue that Village residents have dealt with on an annual basis. This year, the Village is taking a proactive stance, to ensure that the community will remain safe and sanitary during the move out period.

Beginning Monday, May 12, 2015 Village Code Enforcement Officers will begin patrolling neighborhoods to make note of addresses where refuse items are being piled up. At the end of each property’s regular garbage collection day, the Vil-lage of Brockport Department of Public Works will be making rounds to clean up any items left behind. Please note that this is not a free pick up. The property owner will be billed for the collection of any refuse by the Department of Public Works. To ensure this does not take place, contact your refuse col-lection company to verify what they will pick up and make sure any items left behind are brought back from the road.

Please keep all refuse in containers with adequately sealed lids and ensure that all refuse is placed neatly at the curb for collection. Do not place any refuse in the road or block any sidewalks. Refuse may not be placed curbside more than 24 hours prior to scheduled collection. Electronic items will not be picked up by refuse collectors.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Building/Code Enforcement Department at (585) 637-5300 Ext. 14

Thank you for doing your part to help our Village remain clean for everyone!

Appleton featured at season-ending Words on the Verge readingby Kristina Gabalski

Brockport’s Steve Appleton will be fea-tured Saturday, May 16, during the fi-nal reading of this season’s Words on the Verge Reading Series at A Different Path Gallery, 27 Market Street in Brockport.

Appleton is passionate about creating all-inclusive, artistic events which draw together diverse groups of people in a par-ticipation-charged, energetic atmosphere.

Appleton will choose his readings from work he has written himself, says Chris-tine Green, who organizes, hosts and pro-motes Words on the Verge.

“He read some at last month’s Open Mike and was a huge hit,” Green says.

Appleton’s prose and non-fiction is in-spired by the environment, spiritual topics and community service.

Words on the Verge readings are free and open to the public. The May 16 read-ing runs from 5 to 7 pm.

Katherine Weston, owner of A Different Path Art Gallery, began literary readings when the gallery opened in 2010. At first, Tom Holmes hosted and organized month-ly readings, but Green took over the duties when Holmes moved away.

Words on the Verge is supported by do-nations of funds from business leaders and private citizens in the Brockport commu-nity.

Green explains that writers come to the series with a variety of backgrounds which include those who have several published works under their belt, as well as emerg-ing writers just breaking into the scene. Featured writers have read poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, journalism, personal essays, memoir and flash fiction.

Following the May 16 Steve Appleton reading, Words on the Verge will take a summer break during June, July and Au-gust, and will return for the fall-winter reading series in September.

Plan ahead if you want to try straw bale gardeningby Kristina Gabalski

If you want to try growing your vegetables in a straw bale this year, remember you need to work to con-dition the bale before you plant it - about 2-3 weeks ahead of planting time.

You can plant the bale with seeds or transplants, but it’s important to set the bale out a few weeks before planting and keep it well watered so the inner straw will begin to break down. Experts recommend add-ing three cups of organic fertilizer - blood meal, com-post, and cottonseed meal are three examples - every

other day before watering to carry the fertilizer down into the bale.

Conditioning creates a moist, nutrient-rich rooting environment in the bale.

The best straw to use is wheat straw and make sure it is straw and not hay - hay typically contains lots of weed seeds.

It’s recommended that the bale be placed with binding strips on the side to make it easier for water and fertilizer to penetrate - but the process will work either way. Make sure your bale or bales are placed in a sunny spot where they can be easily watered.

Also, give the bales a chance to cool before plant-ing - if they have heated up during the conditioning phase - just stick your hand in the bale to check. When you are ready to plant, dig out a section of straw and add compost or high qual-ity potting mix on top of the straw and gently water the bale before planting.

Keep the bale well wa-tered as it will dry out quickly. Mold/mushroom growth on the bale itself is normal.

If your plants need sup-port, place stakes at either end of the bale and use them for stringing up sup-port, or can place the bales near a fence or shed to help with support.

The bale will continue to decompose during the gar-dening season. What’s left can be used next year as a source of organic mate-rial to build up your garden soil - as long as the plants you grew stayed healthy. If there was any sign of dis-ease, dispose of both the plants and the straw.

Don’t Mask a Back Problem With DrugsWith the array of over-the-counter medica-tion that’s available, and with people’s time always pressed, the temptation is strong to “treat” aches and pains with some sort of tablet. Over the long haul, treating the symp-tom of a problem, rather than the problem itself can put you in jeopardy of injury. The

results of a study published a few years ago in the medical journal Neurology found that the subjects who regularly used pain relievers were significantly more at risk for developing chronic pain. Without addressing the underlying cause of pain, the situation is never going to improve.Chiropractic treatment is well recognized as an effective treatment for lower back pain in particular, and for addressing other types of pain. At the center of chiropractic philosophy is the belief that when the body is functioning properly it is capable of curing many of its ills. Key to the proper functioning is the alignment of all the vertebrae of the spine. The nerves that control the body’s functions pass through those individual vertebrae. If the nerves are under pressure or impaired in any way by vertebra that is out of line, the result can be dysfunction or pain in the part of the body controlled by that nerve. Chiropractic treatment does not involve the use of drugs or surgery. Talk with a chiropractor about ways you might benefit from treatment.

Trillium is a native perennial flowering

wildflower plant which grows in woodsy areas

that are undisturbed. It’s named for its tri-count of petals and leaves.

Some species of trillium are listed as threatened

The red/maroon one photographed above grows in a swampish

area in southern Ogden. The more common -

- but equally beautiful -- white trillium blooms

at the same time as the more rare variety.
