From the Principal
Term 2 has started very well. This
term we have weekly football for
girls and boys, as well as
basketball. It is great to see the
students participating in these
activities.
We have commenced an activity
where we group students from the
area they are from and take them
to learn the traditional ways of
collecting seafood and fishing.
This is an attempt to encourage
them to value the practices of their
ancestors.
We also had seven students who
went for eight days to Geelong
College in Melbourne. All students
enjoyed the experience and grew
considerably from it.
Next week we have NAPLAN
testing for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.
Students are being prepared for
this, but not at the expense of
normal classwork.
Kind regards,
Chris England

FAST FACTS
72% Of the human body is made up of water – which is why
drinking at least 6 cups of water a day is very important!
75% Of your brain is water, so it is very important to drink at
least 6 cups of water a day
Kickstarting Careers!
Dominic Bradshaw (Wyndham, Yr9),
Gize Dau (Darwin, Yr9), Leslie
Phillips-Bangarr (Gunbalunya, Yr10)
and Javarn Cannendo (Townsville,
Yr10) all represented Shalom and
their communities at the 2016 AFL
Kickstart Indigenous
Championships, held in Townsville
over the second week of the Term 1
holidays.
The boys benefitted from the
mentoring and coaching of players
recently involved at an elite AFL
level.
Hopefully next year we will see more
Shalom boys involved in Kickstart!
Off to the cold of Geelong
After arriving on Wednesday, a
group of Shalom students travelled
down to The Geelong College to
spend a week teaching others their
culture, and learning more about
what it is like as a student at Geelong
College.
Kyle Yunupingu (Galiwinku, Yr12),
Carlie-Anne Southward (Cairns,
Yr12), Kiann Walsh (Townsville,
Yr12), Janaya Samardin (Yr12,
Townsville), Sha-Shanna Booth
(Yr12, Townsville) spent the week
with Katrina Booth, and Jodine Daisy
(2015) to Geelong.
Whilst in Geelong, the Shalom
students spent time in the school,
and visited the Fitzroy AMS, Bells
Beach, and some Geelong sites as
well as spending some time getting
to know Melbourne.
Baristas getting busy!
We are working towards getting 16
students who are interested in
getting a coffee (Barista and food
handling) ticket through TAFE in
Term 2.
Some of the students had a trial run
of making coffee and using a
machine that the school is hiring, at
the end of Term 1.
Michelle, from the Willows Coffee
Club came and demonstrated the
skills to the students and then
coached them as they had a go
themselves.
It was a good experience for
everyone and we are looking forward
to doing the official training soon.
Surrender 16
Over the last weekend in Term 1,
Celine Baker, Monique Yarrak and
Head of Boarding Paul Tolliday went
to Melbourne to participate in the
Christian Conference – Surrender 16.
It was a wonderful weekend where
we were able to represent Shalom
Christian College proudly in our
conversations, school uniforms,
Celine praying for the youth in her
language and also sharing a dance
one night on the main stage.
Surrender was all about hearing
about how to “Love God, love one
another and love your enemy”. We
heard from guest speakers of
Mexican, Afro-American and African
backgrounds that all challenged us
to show the love of Jesus in our
communities.
The girls then got to look a little at
the city of Melbourne (they even saw
Djuki Mala one night) and the
weekend was very memorable.
Indigenous Christians from across
Australia were there and it is a place
we will look to be involved in, in the
future.
MANY CULTURES • ONE FAITH | Term 2 Week 4 3
NQ Championships Elliot Clarke (Kalumburu, Yr11) returned to Shalom early
this term to participate in the North Queensland region
U16 AFL Championships. Elliot was a valuable member
of the side that won against Mackay and Capricornia,
and had very close games with Cape York and Cairns.
Surrender 16 Celine (Milingimbi, Yr12) and Monique (Mornington
Island, Yr12) with two of the guest speakers - Noel and
Marianne Castellanos from California.
Suns Academy Lance Hudson (2015) is continuing to impress at the
Gold Coast, recently being selected for the AFL
Queensland U18 State Team.
Junior Hawks swooping! Exciting news this term, with our Under 15s boys joining
with the University Hawks, who for some town have
partnered with Shalom in both senior and womens AFL.
Watch this space for more exciting AFL news.
Confro – 10 weeks away! With only 10 weeks to go until Confraternity 2016, the

Extra sessions are the ones that make all the difference!

Keep Supporting Our School
Supporting us can look like:
• Ask your young person “did they do your best at school today?”
• Ask your young person “What was your favourite class today? Why?”
• Ask your young person “What’s your favourite thing at Shalom?”
• Ask your young person “Who do you go to see if you’re worried or upset?”
Shalom would love to hear from families how their young people are doing at Shalom.
Sometimes they might feel shame or embarrassed to talk about these things with us-they might be a new
student and not know staff very well.
Call and have a talk with one of our PC teachers or Health and Wellbeing Team
