Halloween in the United States
The Colors of Halloween
•In the United States, Halloween is associated with the colors orange and black.
•Orange is associated with Halloween because it is the color of pumpkins, which are a very important part of the holiday.
•Black is associated with Halloween because it is the color of night, darkness, and scary
things.
Who Celebrates Halloween?
• Young children: 3-12 years old
• College students and young adults: 18-25 years old
• Parents with young children
• Anyone who enjoys candy, costumes, or having fun!
Costumes
• Dressing up in costumes is a very important part of Halloween for all ages.
• Some costumes are very simple and others are much more complicated.
• Some people wear scary costumes, but others choose to wear funny or silly costumes.
Some costumes are always common…
• Ghosts, vampires, mummies, witches etc.
• Superheroes
• Princesses
• Pumpkins (most often for little kids)
• A favorite sports player

Trick or Treating• Children dress up in costumes and walk around
their neighborhood with their friends.• They go to their neighbors’ houses and say: “trick
or treat!”• Their neighbors then have to choose between
giving the children a “treat”(candy) or receiving a “trick”(a prank or practical joke).
Most often, the neighbor will give the children a ¨treat.¨

Jack-o-lanterns• Another popular tradition
is carving jack-o-lanterns.• To make a jack-o-lantern,
you first take out the insides of a pumpkin.
• Then you carve a scary or silly face in the pumpkin’s side.
• Finally, you place a small, lit candle inside the pumpkin to make it glow.
Halloween parties
• College students and young adults often celebrate Halloween by having a costume party with their friends.
