Statement of Communion Practice

In the early church, the celebration of the Lord’s Supper was viewed as a continuation of the resurrection appearances of the Risen Savior. It was viewed much the same as Jesus saying to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see My hands. Stop doubting and believe” (John 20:27). As Jesus promised, we believe that He is really present in this Sacrament with His very body and His very blood for our forgiveness. We also believe that oneness in doctrine is Biblically affirmed for those who receive the Sacrament together. We therefore ask guest desiring to

commune to kindly speak with Pastor Dahling before the service.

We thank Marv Drier (baritone) and Cindy Houser (organ), who shared their instrumental talents with us this morning. It enhanced our services. We are blessed to have individuals in our congregation who are willing to share their God-given gifts with us.

Can you imagine Mary Magdalene’s grief as she cried, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have laid Him!” (John 20:2)? Many today ask, “Where is God?” Like Mary, many today are looking for Him in the wrong places. The angel told Mary, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen!” (Luke 24:5-6). Like the angel, we have the answer for those who are looking. Let’s not keep it a secret!

Class, the class is on a short break, resuming April 9.

Included in this morning’s bulletin is our weekly study guide. This week’s guide focuses on “Faith in the

Risen Christ.”

A special thank you goes out to our Decorating Committee for organizing the Easter Garden this year. The

church looks beautiful this glorious Easter morning. Please wait until after the Festival service to take your

Board of Stewardship’s Food for Thought – During this past season of Lent, we followed the events leading up

to the night in the Garden of Gethsemane; we imagined the anguish in Jesus’ voice as He prayed to His Father;

we cringed as we heard the insults hurled at our Lord, and we almost felt the whip on His back and the thorns

piercing His head. Now, today Easter arrives, and we rejoice in our risen Lord and Savior and then we go back

to our lives as usual. But Paul told us how our lives as redeemed children are to be different. “And He died for

all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him Who for their sake died and was

raised” (2 Corinthians 5:15).

Visit Roz’s Reading Room. No check out needed; just return the items when finished so others may

have the opportunity to read them. There’s a basket next to the bookshelves for any new donations.

Tami Stoppenhagen (728-9101) is the coordinator for Meals of Grace in April. If you know of someone who

could benefit from this ministry, please contact Tami.

If you don’t have your Council minutes sent via e-mail, you may pick them up in your slots

(found in either entranceway of the church). The next Council Meeting is this Tuesday, April

2, at 8 p.m. in the church basement.

The youth are selling t-shirts to promote the new association youth group and help raise funds for their Montana

trip this summer. The cost is $15 per shirt and they come in adult sizes small through 3XL. There are forms

available on the SCRIP table this morning as well as in the church office.

At a recent Indiana District Board of Directors meeting, it was announced that the LWML mite

collection in both the National and Indiana District are running behind substantially. The

National’s two-year mite goal is due this March 31, 2013, while the Indiana District’s mite goal is

due on March 31 of 2014. Would you consider donating to mites to help the National LWML

come closer to meeting their goal? The District Board has made the decision that any mites received by March

31, 2013, will be divided 50-50 between the Indiana District and the National organization. Normally the split

is 75% to the Indiana District and 25% to the national organization. After the 31st,

the split will return to 75-25.

Mite envelopes may be placed in the offering plate or given to our LWML Treasurer, Shirley Buuck.

Our LWML Quarterly Meeting will be on Tuesday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the church basement. We hope to

have a DVD to share about the “Little Dresses for Africa” project. Hope to see you there!

The LLL/LWML Spring Rally is at Emmanuel (Soest) on Sunday, April 14, at 3 p.m. The

guest speaker will be The Rev. Dr. Daniel Brege who will speak on his recent trip to the

Philippines. A light supper will be served with a free will offering taken for the supper. The

LWML Spring Prayer Service is Saturday, April 20, at Zion (Decatur). Registration begins at

8:30 a.m. with the service, “Joyful, Joyful,” starting at 9 a.m. Brunch will be served with a free

will offering taken. The ingathering is paper products to be taken to the Seminary Food Bank.

A box is in the Gathering Area if you would like to contribute to the ingathering but can’t make

it to the service.

The 175th

Anniversary Committee has been working hard putting together the history of our congregation. A

limited number of books are available. The cost is $20 per book. There are also adult T-shirts available (sizes

S – M – L – XL). The T-shirts are also $20. There will be a table in the Gathering Area if you would like to

make a purchase.

Our congregation has an opportunity to raise funds by running a food pavilion at the Red

Power Round Up in Lima, Ohio on Wednesday, June 19, through Saturday, June 22.

During this four-day event, we would be preparing and serving the breakfast and lunch meals

at one of the two food pavilions at the Allen County Fair Grounds. In order to make this

successful, we would need a large number of volunteers as the regional show draws around

60,000 people annually. Profit from the work project would go to the church. (In the past those that have run

one of the pavilions has raised around $10,000. Although we can’t be guaranteed that we would raise that much

again this year, it does help to give you an idea of the potential this project would hold.) For more information

about this event, you can check out the following websites, http://www.rpru2013.com/ and http://www.ihc-

oh6.com/. If you are interested in volunteering your time for this event, please contact Beth Kitson as soon as

possible. We realize this is early to make a commitment, but it would be helpful in the planning stage to know

who may be willing to help. Please don’t think you need to volunteer all four days, whatever time you are

willing to give would be appreciated.

Do you have pictures of a confirmation class prior to 1971? A baptismal gown or vintage clothing?

A quilt made by the Tabea Society? Old photos with short stories? The Anniversary Committee is

collecting artifacts such as these to be used in a display to be housed in the Parish Hall during the

summer months. Contact a member of the Anniversary Committee if you have items to share for this

bookshelf in Roz’s Reading Room). Please check to see if there is one for you and take it home today!

As part of our 175th anniversary celebration, on Sunday, April 21, at 2 p.m., we will be

hosting a hymn and choir service under the theme “All God’s People Sing.” The service

will feature the Decatur Circuit Choir, under the direction of Deb Miller, and our choir,

under the direction of Jody Paschal. There will be no sermon and no offering. All are

welcome to sing the praises of Jesus, our Good Shepherd. Invite your family and

The Sunday School students will be making stepping stones to be incorporated into the landscaping around the

church. They will complete this project during the Sunday School hour on Sunday, April 21. Each students is

asked to bring one bag of gems (found at Walmart, Michael’s, JoAnn’s, Hobby Lobby, etc.). The rest of the

supplies will be furnished. The class may run a little longer that Sunday, depending on how many helping

hands are available!

The church cleaning date is this Saturday, April 6. Besides willing hands, rakes, buckets,

wheelbarrows, etc. would also be useful. Cleaning begins at 8 a.m. Hope you can make it!

The LYF is selling dinner and cinnamon rolls with the proceeds to benefit their trip to serve &

explore in the Rocky Mountains, near Glacier National Park, on July 1-10. Order forms can

be found in the Gathering Area and need to be returned by next Sunday, April 7. The

rolls will be delivered to you at church on the 14th

(and no later than the 15th). Please submit

payment with your order with checks made payable to Oasis LYF with “rolls” in the memo

line. The Seasoned Walther Leaguers are planning our next bus trip to Fair Oaks Indiana

on Saturday, August 10! The Dairy Adventure includes a collection of educational

exhibits for the whole family to enjoy, a one-of-a-kind 4D movie experience, a world-

buffet meal or eating in their cafeteria. The buffet would be served to our group only at a

invite friends & family. For reservations, contact Kathy Bultemeier (639-3636), Jim Fuhrman (639-6812), or

Shirley Hormann (724-3101).

The Symbols of Easter

Christianity has many symbols; the most recognizable is, of course, the cross. There are a number of symbols linked with Easter or the Resurrection: the butterfly, the lily, the pomegranate, the phoenix and the peacock.

The butterfly represents the Resurrection and eternal life. It emerges from its cocoon or chrysalis and gloriously rises into the sky in its splendid new body. Similarly, Jesus and his followers are born into a new life on Easter.

The lily is perhaps the most common Easter symbol because it’s displayed during Easter worship services and blooms around this time each year. The lily’s bulb decays in the earth, yet new life sprouts from it in the form of the flower — reminiscent of the new life that emerged from the tomb so many years ago.

The pomegranate is used as a symbol of the power of Christ and his Resurrection because of the many seeds that burst forth from the fruit. These seeds represent the many believers who follow Christ. They also represent the magnificence of divine grace and the fertility of the Word.

The peacock sheds his feathers annually. Each year the feathers grow back more beautiful and more brilliant in color. This renewal symbolizes eternal life or resurrection. There’s also a myth that the peacock’s flesh doesn’t decay after death — immortality. (The peacock is sometimes used to represent human vanity, because of the way he proudly struts and displays his plumage.)

The phoenix was a mythical bird that lived in the Arabian Desert for five hundred years. It set its own nest on fire and perished in the flames. But on the third day, it rose from its own ashes and ascended into the sky as a new and beautiful creature. It’s easy to see why the phoenix represents immortal life and the Resurrection.

The Easter Readings

The First Lesson - Isaiah 65:17-25: “Behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I will create, for I will create Jerusalem to be a delight and its people a joy. I will rejoice over Jerusalem and take delight in my people; the sound of weeping and of crying

will be heard in it no more. “Never again will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not live out his years; he who dies at a hundred will be thought a mere youth; he who fails to reach a hundred will be considered accursed. They will build houses and dwell in them; they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit. No longer will they build houses and others live in them, or plant and others eat. For as the days of a tree, so will be the days of my people; my chosen ones will long enjoy the works of their hands. They will not toil in vain or bear children doomed to misfortune; for they will be a people blessed by the LORD, they and their descendants with them. Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear. The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, but dust will be the serpent’s food. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain,” says the LORD.

P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

The Second Lesson - 1 Corinthians 15:19-26: If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

P: The Gospel according to St. Luke, the twenty-fourth chapter.

The Gospel Lesson - Luke 24:1-12 – On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the two men took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee. The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ Then they remembered his words. When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

The Sermon Text – 1 Timothy 6:12-16 – But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
