RUINS IN THE T HIRD A GEThis is a new series articles presents playable adventure sites that expose your Middle-earth players to the richhistory of and dangers in the lands. All of the sites in these articles can be played by your players if you areplaying in the Third Age without necessarily coming into con ict with the Fellowship, allowing you to use theWar of the Ring as an ongoing backdrop to your campaign 'running alongside' that story.

Each entry begins with a short history of the ruins, followed by a brief description of the climate. After that afew story hooks are mentioned. The entry concludes with a description of what the ruins may be like today. The Narrator will have to create maps and encounters, of course.

A MON SÛLby Joel Sanda

Amon Sûl ("Weathertop" in Westron or Mannish) lies at the southern end of the Weather Hills and was awatchtower that stood near the center of ancient Arnor. Elendil built the tower to hold a Palantir. In its laterdays, it marked where the kingdoms of Arthedain, Cardolan, and Rhuduar met after Arnor broke apart

following the death of its last king, Eärendur, in 861 of the Third Age.Weathertop lies about 100 miles east of Bree, along the Great Road. It is the highest point between Bree andRivendell along the Great Road so it makes an obvious point to survey the surrounding area.

C LIMATESummers and winters are both mild. It's not uncommon for fog to ll low-lying areas during cool times of theyear, lending a haunting scene for those gazing on the lands around from the top of Amon Sûl. The countrysidesurrounding the hill is scattered woodlands interspersed with some short grasslands. Concealment along theroad is particularly dif cult if there are watchers on Weathertop. Rain is common in the spring and earlysummer.

ADVENTURE HOOKSWeathertop is a convenient place to rest when traveling to or fromBree. Because it's the highest point along the Great Roadbetween Bree and Rivendell, it makes a convenient placeto observe the surrounding lands.

The small hollow with a nearby spring on the hill'snorthwestern slope where Aragorn led the hobbits isa possible rest stop, and some travelers are likely tobe aware of this spot.

T HE RUINS TODAYToday Weathertop is a ruined tower, with little leftbut the road leading up to the hill's summit and a ringof broken stones. There will likely be no timber or woodremaining from the tower's construction, as it has eitherrotted over the years or been used previously for res.

FELLOWSHIP TIE- INWeatherto was visited on October 6, 3018, when Frodo was wounded b the Witch-kin .

FAN FLAVOURNEW ITEMRING OF C OURAGEby Celebraen

"Fell deeds awake, re and slaughter! Spear shall be shaken, shieldbe splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!" --Theoden, The Ride of the Rohirrim, The Return of the King.

The Ring of Courage is a slender band of gold inset with a erycarnelian which gives the wearer great courage in battle. Theelven-smith who crafted the ring actually wore it into battle.Specically, the battle of the Last Alliance before the gates ofMordor, and it hasn't been seen since. During the battle, the smithfell into a rage upon seeing a kinsman killed by one of Sauron'scaptains. He pursued the captain across the plains, driving the manbefore him as they fought. The captain ed the battle itself, but wasunable to shake the furious Elf. In the confusion of the ghting, noone actually saw where the smith and his foe went.

In game terms, the ring provides either 2 temporary extra Courage points or +3to all Armed Combat rolls; the effect must be picked at the beginning of the session. Unfortunately, it wascrafted using the techniques that Sauron taught so a Willpower test is required to avoid falling into bloodlust;the wearer must make a roll at the rst signs or sounds of combat or temporarily gain the Battle-fury aw, withthe level of the aw depending on the degree of failure in the roll. Another Willpower test is allowed afterevery 5 rounds to resist continued battle-fury. Every time the wearer succumbs to bloodlust, the Willpower TNgets higher.

As a side note, the ring tends to increase the wearer's fertility as well as courage; the wearer typically has manychildren for his race, and even Elves feel this effect.
