NEW MATERIALS FOR A NEW AGE.

It wasn’t so many years ago that automobiles were forged from steel, airplanes built from aluminum and boats crafted out of fiberglass. Times sure have changed. Today, composites and other advanced materials, tools and technologies are revolutionizing the marketplace, creating new opportunities for businesses to get in on the ground floor of innovation and invention in Washington State’s advanced manufacturing sector.

Nearly 100 companies statewide are pushing the envelope of what is possible in advanced materials, creating a new generation of cutting-edge products in nearly every category, from recreational equipment and aviation to music and medicine. New products continue to flow out of research labs across the state, including guitars, snowboards and bindings, fly rods, surveillance radars, ship hulls, aircraft landing gear doors and overhead storage bins, bikes, racing shells, helicopter rotor blades, golf clubs and machinery – all made by Washington State companies.

A veritable who’s who of innovationOn the manufacturing front, companies such as Electroimpact, Globe Machine, Flow International and Janicki are creating next-generation tools and equipment to form, mold, cut, cure and finish composite structures, from custom-designed prosthetics used by athletes to highly complex winglet structures, which add fuel efficiency to aircraft. Boeing continues to push the limits, first with its mostly composite commercial aircraft, the 787 Dreamliner, and soon the next-generation 777X, featuring the largest composite wing ever produced.

Page 5: HALL 7.3 UPPER FLOOR WH M63 C TON WASHINGchoosewashingtonstate.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/... · quality systems such as NQA-1, Mil-I-45208A, Boeing Company D6-82479 and ITAR complaint

In fact, Washington State is one of the few places in the nation, if not the world, where the entire composites supply chain is represented. For example, SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers’ plant produces a fifth of the world’s carbon fiber – 9,000 tons a year – and Toray turns carbon-fiber thread into resin-infused tape, which is used in the tail sections of airplanes.

The sector is supported by cutting-edge research conducted by world-class R&D labs such as the Automobili Lamborghini Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory and the Center for Excellence for Aerospace and Advanced Materials Manufacturing, as well as college training programs designed to create a steady flow of highly skilled advanced manufacturing workers to keep up with industry demand.

Opportunities aboundWhether you are looking to invest in existing companies, expand into the U.S. market or establish new partnerships with some of the most successful advanced materials companies in the world, Washington State is a great choice. Not only are we business friendly, but Washington offers you a strong network of support, including: EB-5 Citizenship, the FDI Network and the Department of Commerce’s European office can help you with investment and expansion opportunities in Washington State.

Our team can help you with site selection, education and workforce training, permitting and regulations and financing. These services are free to any company wanting to do business with or in Washington State.
