A Study of price movements in any sector can reveal the demand-supply imbalance in it. Analysis of prices play major role in monitoring progress of an economy. The “Half Yearly Bulletin on Price Statistics January 2017 to June 2017” provides monthly wholesale and retail prices of selected commodities from the local market. I am thankful to the merchants for extending their co-operation in collection of wholesale and retail prices of selected commodities. CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

The price indices are closely monitor indicators to measure economic performances. They

play vital role in the designing, operationalizing and monitoring the fiscal policy. There are

three government agencies namely, Labor Bureau in the Ministry of Labor, Office of

Economic Adviser in the Ministry of Commerce & Industry and Central Statistics Office in the

Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) responsible for the collection,

compilation and computation of various price indices such as Consumer Price Index

Number(CPIN) and Wholesale Price Index Number(WPIN).

Price Indices are direct indicators of the purchasing power of money in various types of

transactions involving goods and services. As such, they are also used as deflators in

providing summary measures of the volume of goods and services produced and

consumed.

The Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Gandhinagar is collecting prices for more than

100 food items on fortnightly basis, and more than 100 non- food items on half yearly basis

from 33 District Head Quarters. The “Half Yearly Bulletin on Price Statistics January-June

2017” provides information on different price indices as well as wholesale and retail prices of

selected food commodities for the time period January 2017 to June 2017 for the Bhavnagar

District of the State.

Bhavnagar is one of districts, which collects and submits price data to DES on regular basis

in this context; in line with the publication published by DES, Gandhinagar.

DSO, Bhavnagar office has brought out this publication presenting the price movement and

trend analysis of movement of wholesale and retail price of the various food commodity viz.,

Rice, Wheat, Jowar, Bajri, Gram dal, Tur dal, Moong, Gur, Sugar, Groundnut Oil,

Cottonseed Oil, Vanspati Ghee, Potato, Onion and Butter.

• An upward trend has been observed in Retail prices of Gramdal and a downward trend

has been observed in Retail and Wholesale prices of Turdal and Moongdal.

• In 1st half of the year 2017, wholesale price of Gram Daal decreased by 33.5%.

• In 1st half of the year 2017, Retail price of Turdal-split decreased by 21.4% and

Wholesale price decreased by 14.1%.

• In 1st half of the year 2017, Wholesale price of Moong dal increased by 15%.
