Half-Halt The Newsletter for the Southeastern Chapter of the Virginia Dressage Association Volume Number 21 Issue Number 11 November 2007 JEANNE MCDONALD CLINIC REPORT The long planned SVDA clinic with FEI “I” Judge and successful trainer/ instructor Jeanne McDonald was well worth waiting for when we all had a chance to learn from one of the best the first weekend in October. The theme of the weekend was improving the correct use of the aids with precise timing. She emphasized the use of seat and the rider’s core with only very light rein aids. Use of a dominating rein was quickly changed to aids that focused on the seat and core. Jeanne’s lessons were fun and informative with many great analogies and visual concepts for everyone. Below are some of Jeanne’s unique quotes that SVDA members report has “stuck with them”. “Ride your horse in the canter with the feeling of a dolphin coming out of the water from your inside leg to outside rein” (the use of a sweeping leg and seat) “Downward transitions need to be made with a big SIGH not with your hands”. “Think HICCUP with your chest for a half halt” (the idea of stretching up tall from your core – instead of using your hands”. ”Riders need to bend their knees and keep their ankles next to the horse” “Hands always need to be forward thinking with a following seat.” “Take regular strokes with your seat for working canter, short light and lifting strokes for collected canter and big sweeping strokes for Medium or Extended canter” “Try to keep the feeling of medium gaits from behind but keep it just a little slower in front “ (to get collection with out losing impulsion behind). “Think of the horse like a car… The outside leg is the accelerator, the inside leg is the differential, the outside rein is the brake and the inside rein is the turn signal. Your weight is the steering wheel.” New SVDA member Victoria Bryant reports having 2 “lightbulb” moments….; I realized that keeping my outside leg back, especially while cantering, straightens Boogie and makes for a great “rocking horse canter”. Also, when halting I need to squeeze my thighs and almost sit forward rather than lean back behind the vertical which makes for a much nicer halt. Boogie stayed on the bit much easier in these downward transitions! SVDA hopes everyone had a great time and really benefited from this low cost clinic which was partially funded thought the VADA chapter grant. We plan to have Jeanne return in the 1 st quarter of 08 so watch your SVDA Calendar! SVDA JUNIORS WIN MULTIPLE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS The 5th Annual Arabian Sport Horse Nationals was an exciting time for SVDA juniors Amanda Tursini and Jessica Zoskey! This is the 3rd time the Championships have been held in Lexington, VA in the last week in September. The entire facility was FULL with participants in hunter over fences, dressage, sport horse in hand & under saddle, open jumping, reining and driving. These National Championships are held alternating years on the East and West Coasts. 14 year old Amanda Tursini and her Purebred Arabian mare “Falkina” bested all the adults to win the National Championship in 3rd LL open, scoring over a 64% and then they also went on to win the Championship 3rd LL Amateur/ Junior with a 65+%. Amanda also won top 10 awards in both the 2nd LL open and Amateur/Jr divisions. Danielle Rowland coaches Amanda. 17 year old Jessica Zoskey and her Arabian/Fresian gelding “FA Patriot” were 3 time National Champions, winning the 4th LL open with a 67+% against 16 other riders and 4th LL Amateur/Junior with a 63+%. They also were selected to compete in the Musical Freestyle Exhibition Championship where they were judged to be the National Champions with their FEI Young Rider Freestyle choreographed by Spirit Horse Productions from Charlottesville, VA. Additionally Jessica and “Blue” were Reserve National Champions in a 17 horse Prix St. George class with over a 67%. Jessica said about her experience “Sport Horse Nationals was a thrilling week for me, it shows that hard work really does pay off”. Jessica is coached by Kathy Rowse. SVDA adult member Christie Cherry won top 10 honors as well. Christie and her gelding “Gracious Imagine That” placed in the Top 10 in the 3rd LL Open. Amanda St John finished 12th out of 50 riders with “Frankly Supreme” won Top 10 in the highly competitive raining Level Amateur division. 12 year old Ryan Spanagel finished just out of the ribbons in the 1st LL Amateur with her 5 year old purebred Arab. Both Amanda and Ryan are in their very first year of showing! The Nationals are all judged by a panel of 2 “S” Judges. Participating this year were Bev Rodgers (CA), Barb Ebner (NJ), Lois Hederdahl (WI) and Sonja Marita Vracko (WA). Riders must qualify throughout the show season either at Arabian or Open Dressage shows and at the championships they ride the highest test of the level without whips or readers, much like the USDF / GAIG championships.

NOMINATIONS SHEL GAFFORD MEMORIAL AWARD

for EXCELLENCE IN SPORTSMANSHIP

Once again it’s time for the VADA membership to vote for this year’s recipient of the Shel Gafford Award.

Please take a minute to read over the following two nominations and vote for the one you feel most personifies the spirit of good sportsmanship, love of our sport, and unselfish support of fellow dressage enthusiasts. The recipient of the Shel Gafford Award will receive a lovely plaque and monetary award at the annual VADA Awards Banquet. Each chapter is to establish a method for collecting its votes. If your chapter’s method of voting is not clear to you, please contact your chapter president for clarification. December 15, 2007 is the deadline for casting your vote. Please don’t forget to vote! SHELI KING, (VADA/NOVA): I nominate Sheli King to receive the 2007 Shel Gafford award based on her numerous contributions to dressage in Virginia over the last several years. Sheli currently serves as the President of VADA/NOVA, and under her leadership the Chapter has expanded the scope while maintaining the high quality of all its many activities. For the past two years, Sheli has spearheaded VADA/NOVA’s off-season Unmounted Education Day, which is now an annual event that brings together horse enthusiasts throughout Northern Virginia to learn more about our horses and our sport. Sheli and her non-horsy husband, Al, are frequent volunteers at the Chapter’s many shows and other events. As a true adult amateur rider (Sheli daily commutes to downtown DC to work at the headquarters of a federal law enforcement agency), Sheli has shown great persistence with her own dressage journey. Along the way, she has earned many awards, including the national USDF Vintage Cup at Training Level in 2004 and innumerable Chapter and VADA awards, but always remains humble in her assessment of her own skills. Even more importantly, Sheli shows unwavering support for her fellow riders and competitors. Sheli’s passion and commitment to dressage and outstanding sportsmanship are highly deserving of recognition. I am proud to nominate her for the Shel Gafford award. Sincerely, Jessie Ginsburg JANICE MUMFORD, (SVDA): I am pleased to nominate Janice Mumford for the Shel Gafford Award. Janice epitomizes the goals and standards established by Shel. She is especially supportive of our young riders, even lending her FEI partner to a young rider. She can be seen at many of our competitions grooming, braiding, encouraging, coaching and reading for many competitors. She has been called to judge a show at 7:30AM and she was there at 8:00AM! Last October she was Chef d’Equipe for the VADA Team. She currently serves as Secretary of SVDA and is supportive of all fund raisers and clinics and competitions. On a personal level, I would never have returned to the show ring without her support. I have never known her to say no to anything that would benefit a horse or rider. Having been honored as a former recipient of this award, I feel Janice is more than worthy of this recognition and privilege. Sincerely, Marylyn Leonard

Dear Sarah: I would like to thank everyone who rode and all the volunteers at the horse show that you all put on for me. I would also like to thank all the people who donated money and merchandise that was auctioned. I would like to thank Robin Nunnally for not only this show but for being a very good friend. She has not only helped me with my accident, but also when my Mom was so very sick and she passed away Feb. 1, 2007. There are not too many people who would stick by me the way she has, but anyone who knows Robin, knows that that's the kind of person she is. Please print this in the next newsletter and let everyone know how grateful I am for everything that everyone has done for me. Sincerely, Joy White
