• Haiti is located in the Caribbean and takes up the western one third of the island Hispaniola. It shares the island with the Dominican Republic.

Haiti’s climate is tropical, but is semiarid where mountains cut off trade winds.

Literacy In 1997 the government passed a 10-year education plan with the
goal of universal access to quality schools. The national budget increased the education budget to pay for programs for school lunches, uniforms, and bus transportation.
In 2002, 30,000 literacy monitors distributed 700,000 literacy manuals
School attendance has risen 44% (from 20 % in 1994 to 64 percent in 2000).
