REACH will target 20,250 farming households in 36 municipalities in six geographic departments (Northwest, Northeast, Central Plateau, Nippes, Grand-Anse and Southeast). Heifer Haiti has a well-established presence and strong relationships in these areas, which will facilitate rapid start up, high impact and sustainability.
REACH is designed to improve economic opportunities for farmers using the holistic
approach to socioeconomic development for which Heifer is known. The approach combines livestock and crop inputs for integrated farming, improved husbandry techniques, business training and market linkages, the establishment of goat and pig breeding centers and activities to foster community and social harmony. A key element of Heifer’s approach is “Passing on the Gift,” whereby each project participant receiving livestock passes on the first female animal offspring to another family. The practice enhances sustainability
and enables farmers to become donors themselves by sharing their own assets and knowledge in order to create a continuously expanding network of hope, dignity, and self-reliance.
Currently, income from farm-based activities averages $50 per month. REACH is projected to increase incomes from 100 percent for individual livestock producers to
220 percent for breeding center owners. The project also aims to generate 300 full-time jobs through the breeding centers, and train a network of 120 community animal health workers as well as other professionals within the subsectors.
