Hello Hadley Blue Devil Families! Winter activities have ended, temperatures are rising, and spring is on its way! Blue Devils have seen basketball season come to end, National Academic League shined, Fine Arts performances were joyous, and track season is right around the corner. Quarter 4 begins when we return from Spring Recess.

Pre-enrollment for 2018-2019 school year recently occurred through Science. If your Blue Devil has not shared their exploratory course selections with you, please ask them what they selected! Our counseling department works thoroughly to ensure students receive their top exploratory choices; therefore, schedule changes are ex-tremely limited. Core course placements are determined by student performance on formative and summative assessments such as Fast Bridge screeners and Kansas Assessment Performance. We are diligent in appropriate course placements and encourage your students step up and excel.

From our Hadley community to yours, we hope you have a refreshing spring recess.

Yours in Learning,

Amy L Johnson

you want your student to take med-

icine at school, you will have to

provide it, and get a physician’s

order for the school to administer.

Students are not to carry medica-

tion with them at school without the

necessary paperwork.

Again, this includes over-the- coun-

ter medications.

More News from the Nurse

If your student needs medi-

cations at school, you need

to complete a new request

and provide a new prescrip-

tion school each year.

If your child needs medica-

tion, please bring the com-

pleted and signed paper-

work to school. Remember

to sign the parent permis-

sion form, obtain a doctor’s

signature and order for all

prescription medications.

The doctor must complete

the dosage, frequency, and

symptoms for administration.

The Health Room does not

stock any medications, even

over-the-counter medica-

tions, to give to students. If

Please schedule your student to receive the Tdap vaccine before school starts in August. A new immunization record will then need to be sent to stay on file at Hadley. If your student is not current on vaccinations, they may be excluded from school later in the fall until their immun-izations are brought up to date.

Spring field trips are approaching. If your student takes or needs medica-tion but does not have it at school or there are other health concerns, please contact me.

Academics First List

At Hadley, we promote an attitude of

“Academics Come First”.

Therefore, we create a weekly list of students who are not meeting our high expectations in the classroom and have received at least one failing grade. We call this list the Academics First List

(AFL).

If a student is on the AFL, he or she cannot participate in any of the week’s activities.

The student will receive a notice during his or her Check and Connect class on Monday. The stu-dent should spend that extra time studying, working with mentors, getting some extra tutoring, or

reading so that his or her grades can improve.

We want and encourage students to participate in extra-curricular activities but we also want the students to understand the importance of focusing on their academics.

Creating excellence, no excuses!

If your student calls you to pick them up from any place except the Nurse’s Office, they

will not be medically excused.

Don’t forget to call the attendance line daily at 973-7815 if your student won’t be in

school. If you do have a doctor, dentist of other professional caregivers written excuse

of absence, please bring it in on the day of the student’s return.

The School District has very specific criteria about when a student must be sent home,

based on guidelines from the Health Department. The nurse will assess students who

are not feeling well, and if a nursing assessment indicates that the student meets these

criteria, parents will be contacted.

Keep Saving your Box Tops!

The Family Engagement Commit-

tee is asking all students and their

families to save their BOXTOPS for

Education Labels. The drive contin-

ues and during the school year we

will be awarding prizes to the class-

rooms who bring in the most. The

BOXTOPS allow us to buy books and

prizes to promote independent read-

ing, and the 25 Book Campaign.

Happenings at Hadley

On Tuesday, March 6, Hadley’s 6th graders participated in IMPACT Day (Initiating and Mod-

eling Positive Action and Change Together). Students attended a variety of sessions such as Impact Your Wardrobe on a Teenagers Budget, Impact Your Presentation, Impact Your Fu-ture, and others. A variety of guest speakers including Miss Kansas Teen USA came to par-ticipate in this event. The day ended with representatives from the Wichita Children’s Home, the Union Rescue Mission, and the US Army coming to receive the service projects that the

students worked on during the Impact Your Community sessions.

Congratulations to The Hadley Science Olympiad Team for receiving medals in 4 events. Even though those students presented the projects and won medals, the entire team had a hand in these pro-jects and worked together to get these done. It truly was a team effort. This is the best we have done in competition to date!

Cameron Patrick and Jacob Wingard in Roller Coaster.

Lydia Steeby and Renee Amaya in Wright Stuff.

To get to the library page, visit www.usd259.org/hadley, locate the library tab under programs, and choose the page for the catalog.

Students come to the library every two weeks during Language Arts Classes. They can also ask for a pass--most of the time the library is open for flexible checkout during 4 or 5 and 8 periods. We are also open before school and after school on Mon, Wed, and Fri. Students have the option to request a book from our Hadley Library through an online form located on the Hadley website.

The next Book fair is April 30 to May 4. It is the BOGO, or buy one get one free, bookfair! The most exciting part of the book fair is seeing all the new books.

So far this year, we have used Scholastic Book Fair proceeds to purchase magazines for student use located in the library, 3 Free Book Exchange shelves for the hallways, listening stations for the 6th grade language arts clas-ses, multiples of books titles for classroom use, and prizes for students from the book fair.

Book Swap Trade and Borrow Available in the library and throughout the building. We have a bookcase in the periodical section of the library dedicated to books that anyone can borrow or trade. You are welcome to donate to or trade with things on the shelf.

We have installed Free Book Exchange Shelves in the following locations:

F Hall – North end between Room F1 and the auditorium doors

A Hall – in one of the insets near the Library

E Hall – at D hall intersection on the north side of the water fountain

Students are welcome to use books from these shelves. It is great if they can return the book or bring one to

put on the shelf for trade. But, no one is keeping track! Families are welcome to send books to put on the

shelves. If there isn’t room, bring them to the library, and we will store them until needed. This is an exam-

ple of the many services provided to the students at Hadley which are funded by the book fair.

In the Footsteps of Crazy Horse by Joseph Marshall

Jimmy McClean is a Lakota boy—though you wouldn’t guess it by his name: his father is part white and part Lakota, and his mother is Lakota. When he embarks on a journey with his grandfather, Nyles High Eagle, he learns more and more about his Lakota heritage—in particular, the story of Crazy Horse, one of the most important figures in Lakota and American history. Drawing references and inspiration from the oral stories of the Lakota tradition, cele-brated author Joseph Marshall III juxtaposes the contemporary story of Jimmy with an insider’s perspective on the life of Tasunke Witko, better known as Crazy Horse (c. 1840–1877). The book follows the heroic deeds of the Lakota leader who took up arms against the US federal government to fight against encroachments on the territories and way of life of the Lakota people, includ-ing leading a war party to victory at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Along with Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse was the last of the Lakota to surrender his people to the US army. Through his grandfather’s tales about the famous warrior, Jim-my learns more about his Lakota heritage and, ultimately, himself.

The Seventh Most Important Thing by Shelley Pearsall

Arthur T. Owens grabbed a brick and hurled it at the trash picker. Arthur had his rea-sons, and the brick hit the Junk Man in the arm, not the head. But none of that matters to the judge—he is ready to send Arthur to juvie forever. Amazingly, it’s the Junk Man himself who offers an alternative: 120 hours of community service . . . working for him.

Arthur is given a rickety shopping cart and a list of the Seven Most Important Things: glass bottles, foil, cardboard, pieces of wood, lightbulbs, coffee cans, and mirrors. He can’t believe it—is he really supposed to rummage through people’s trash? But it isn’t long before Arthur realizes there’s more to the Junk Man than meets the eye, and the “trash” he’s collecting is being transformed into something more precious than any-one could imagine. The Nest by Kenneth Oppel

Steve just wants to save his baby brother—but what will he lose in the bargain? Kenneth Oppel’s (Silverwing, The Boundless) haunting gothic tale for fans of Coraline, is one of the most acclaimed books of the year, receiving six starred reviews. Illustrations from Caldecott Medalist Jon Klassen.

For some kids summer is a sun-soaked season of fun. But for Steve, it’s just an-other season of worries. Worries about his sick newborn baby brother who is fighting to survive, worries about his parents who are struggling to cope, even worries about the wasp’s nest looming ominously from the eaves. So when a mysterious wasp queen invades his dreams, offering to “fix” the baby, Steve thinks his prayers have been answered. All he has to do is say “Yes.” But “yes” is a powerful word. It is also a dangerous one. And once it is uttered, can it be taken back?
