Hadeeth 10: At-Tayyib (Being Pure)
Speaker: Sister Eman Al Obaid
Date: 01.05.2012
In the Hadith-'At-Tayyib' (Being Pure), The Prophet (sallAllahu
'alayhi wa sallam) said: “Verily Allah, the Exalted, is pure and
accepts only that which is pure. Allah has commanded the believers
to do that which He has commanded the Messengers."
Allah is elevating the believers by commanding them along with the
Messengers/Prophets. Though the Prophets and Messengers are the
best of the creations in obeying Allah but they were also commanded
by Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala.
The more you have faith, the more you submit to Allah and the more
you perfect your actions such as your Salaat (prayers) and other
righteous deeds. When you know that Allah not only commands you
but also He has commanded the Messengers and Prophets, it will
encourage you to do more good deeds. For Ex: If you see someone
doing good deeds it will also encourage you to good.
Now we will see what Allah commanded the Mursaleen and the
Mu'mineen –
Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala says to the Messengers:
 ـ ا ٱ ـ $ وٱ!ا ٱ ـ % O you Messengers! Eat of the good things and act righteously….
[Surat Al-Mu'minun, 23:51]
Here Allah commanded the Messengers/Prophets to eat of the good
foods and do righteous deeds.
Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala says to the believers:
' ـ +ا ءا(ا ٱ) ـ .- ط ـ وٱ2.وا رز/( 3
O you who believe! Eat of the good things that We have provided
you with and be grateful to Allah….. [Surat Al-Baqarah, 2:172]
Here Allah commands the believers to eat of the good foods which He
has provided them with.
Allah has commended the Messengers as well as the believers 'to eat'
like how He has commanded to do the other acts of "Ibaadah (such
as Salat, Zakat etc.). So we must not eat the food according to our
habit or for our enjoyment but we need to eat it as an act of 'Ibaadah.
We should first have the niyyah to eat or drink for the sake of Allah,
before we begin to eat or drink saying 'Bismillah' so that we don't
want to lose any hasanaat (rewards) in the Aakhirah/Paradise.
Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala will command the believers in the
Paradise
Surat Aţ-Ţūr
52:19
[They will be told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to
do."
Surat Al-Ĥāqqah 69:24
[They will be told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you put
forth in the days past."
Surat Al-Mursalāt 77:43
[Being told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do."
So here in the above mentioned Verses, Allah is saying that He will be
commanding the believers to eat and drink with pleasure also in the
Paradise. This is a command to the believers to enjoy in the Paradise.
So when you eat and drink in dunya, you need to do it as an act of
'ibaadah. In dunya we cannot eat and drink with pleasure and enjoy
all the time because we are scared of obesity or other illnesses, but in
Paradise we can eat and drink with pleasure and enjoy eternally.
Now look at the other thing mentioned in the same hadith- Allah has
commanded the Messengers and believers not only to eat but also to
eat the halal food. The Prophet (sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Verily Allah, the Exalted is Pure. He does not accept but that which
is pure."
So for the sake of Allah, we need to eat from the Tayyibaat (pure /
good foods) because Allah accepts only that which is pure. We need
to eat all kinds of pure food which Allah has made Halal (Lawful)
such as the meat of slaughtered eatable animals, milk/milk products,
vegetables, fruits etc.
Eating haram foods can have adverse effects on yourselves and in
your 'ibaadah (worship). These haram foods will have adverse effects
on your physical health as well as mental health.
In Surat Al-Baqarah, 2:172- Allah said:
' ـ   ا ءا(ا ٱ)  ـ '& $ ط" ـ وٱ2.وا رز() 3
O you who believe! Eat of the good things that We have provided
you with and be grateful to Allah…
The food we eat should be not only halal but also it should be from a
good source/provision. For Example: Buying food using the money
from Alcohol business or from Ribaa' (Usury), picking fruits from
others gardens thinking that no one is watching, eating food stuffs at
the supermarkets without paying, opening the fridge at others houses
and taking some food or drink without their permission etc. are
haram or from the haram sources.
You need to eat halal foods from halal sources. Islam does not allow
to have anything haram or from the haram sources as these things
can affect yourselves as well as your 'ibaadah and also you will be
held accountable for it.
So Tayyibaat means something halal and it should be from a good
provision.
In Surat Al-Muiminun, 23:51- Allah said:
 ـ ٱ.-" ا ٱ ـ 4$ وٱ01ا ـ 5
O you Messengers! Eat of the good things and do righteous deeds….
What is the relation between good food and good deeds in this
Aayah?
The 'ulamaa' said: At-Tayyibat (good foods) help a person to act
righteously. Eating good food can have a good effect on your
acts/deeds and also good effects in your 'ibaadah (worship), hikmah
(wisdom), kalaam (speech) etc. It will have good effects on your
physical as well as mental health.
All the Messengers had missions and so they needed to eat good food
to continue and complete their missions (good foods -> good deeds).
The haram foods could have caused obstacles in their missions. So
halal food is very important and that's why Allah commanded all His
Messengers and believers to eat good food.
In Surat Al-Kahf, 18:19- Allah says: "So send one of you with this
silver coin of yours to the city and let him look to which is the best of
food and bring you provision from it…"
In this Ayah we can find from the story of Ashaab al-Kahf (people of
the cave) that one of them was sent to the town with silver coins to
find out the purest food (Azka ta'aman) and to bring some of that to
them.
So we need to always eat only the halal food. If someone can't eat
certain halal foods due to specific valid reasons such as allergy or
other health issues, then they can quit those foods. At-Tayyib min at-
ta'am- the best from the food- It is not according to people's desire.
You can't say about any halal food that it is bad because you don't
like it. The lawful (halal) and unlawful (haram) is not according to
your desire but it's according to the Divine Command from Allah
Subhanahu wa Ta'ala.
In one of the above Aayaat (2:172) Allah says:
-. ـ رز/( ـ وٱ9'8وا 7 +ا ط ' ـ ءا(ا ٱ)
O you who believe! Eat of the good things that We have provided you
with and be grateful to Allah...
So you need to be grateful to Allah because it is Allah Who blessed
you and provided you with the best food.
This is all about the two Aayat mentioned in the above hadith (At-
Tayyib), in which Allah has commanded the Messengers (23:51) and
the believers (2:172) to eat from the Tayybiaat (good/pure things)
which Allah has provided.
The halal food has good effect on our righteous acts/deeds as well as
our 'Ibaadah. So in order to have the best in dunya and in the
'Aakhirah we need to eat the halal food.
Last week we had discussed about the animals whose meat and skin is
impure and haram. Regarding the matter of tanning and using the
skin of those animals (crocodile, snake, horse etc.) whose meat is
haram, there is a dispute between the scholars and there are five
different opinions among them. So it's doubtful whether we are
allowed or not allowed to use the leather products that are made out
of the skin of those animals. It is also not worth buying those expensive
leather items which are made out of crocodile skin etc. And Allah
knows best.
Now we will talk about the food which is haram. There are certain
foods or the meat of certain animals which Allah Subahnahu wa
Ta'ala has made haram/unlawful. We can't make any food haram
unless there is evidence from Quran and Sunnah. So we need to know
about those animals whose meat is haram according to the Sharee'ah.
Al-Muharramaat min-al-At'amah - The Forbidden Foods There are different kinds of animals, birds, insects etc. whose meat is
not allowed to eat. Let us first see the wild animals whose meat is
forbidden to be eaten.
Al-Haywaanat al-Bariyah - The Wild Animals
The wild animals whose meat is forbidden:
• Kullu naabin yaftarisu bihi (Al-Asad An-Namr Ad-dubb)-
All the predators that have fangs (carnivores)-
Ex: Lion, tiger, bear, wolf, dog etc.
• Al-Haywaanaat as-Saamah (al-'aqrab)-
Poisonous animals/reptiles-
Ex: Scorpions, snakes etc.
• Al-Mustakhbathah (al-jurdhaan wal faar) –
[Mustakhbathah from khabeethah which means filthy]
Filthy/disgusting animals
Ex: Rat/mouse, squirrels, monkeys etc.
• Al-Humur al-Ahliyyah-
There are two types of donkeys- Domesticated donkeys and wild
donkeys (Zebras)
Domesticated donkeys ->Haram
Hadith:
Abu Tha’labah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger
of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade the meat
of domesticated donkeys." [Al-Bukhaari (5527) and Muslim (1936)]
http://islamqa.info/en/ref/85534/donkey
*But it is permissible to eat the meat of wild donkeys (Zebras) ->
Halal
Hadith:
Abu Qataadah (may Allah be pleased with him) who hunted an
onager (wild donkey) and brought a piece of it to the Prophet (peace
and blessings of Allah be upon him) and he ate some of it, and he
said to his companions: “It is halal, eat it.”
• Al-Khinzeer-
The pigs
Pork is forbidden in Islam according to the Verses of the Qur’an,
where Allah says:
م و$- ٱ5(4 م !:- ٱ89 وٱ7 إ> ;“He has forbidden you only the Maytah (dead animals), and blood, and the flesh of swine3..” [Al-Baqarah 2:173]
أن !G ط!- DC ۥ إ@ $ Gإ G;أو GH 7Iأ @ / KIۥ ر C<LH 4)M -$ أو ;NO .ن 89 أو د
Say (O Muhammad ): "I find not in that which has been inspired to me anything forbidden to be eaten by one who wishes to eat it, unless it be Maytatah (a dead animal) or blood poured forth (by slaughtering or the like), or the flesh of swine (pork, etc.) for that surely is impure….." [Surat Al-An'aam, 6:145]
These are the animals whose meat is forbidden (haram) and now we
will see the birds whose meat is forbidden/haram.
At-Tuyoor - The Birds
The birds whose meat is forbidden to be eaten:
• Kullu mukhlab min at-Tuyoor-
All the birds that hunt with talons (sharp claws).
Ex: Falcons, eagles, kites, hawks, etc.
• Mustakhbath (al-wathwaath)-
Birds that feed on carrions and filthy things
Ex: Bats, vultures, crow etc.
• Kullu maa Amar an-Nabi sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam
yaqtuluhu (al-ghuraab, al-aswad, al-'aqrab, al-faar, al-kalb)
Any animals or birds that Prophet (sallAllahu 'alyhi wa sallam)
had ordered us to kill (if they are harmful).
For ex: Ravens/Crows, lions, scorpions, rats/mice, dogs (mad) etc.
‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that Hafsah (radhiyAllahu 'anha) said: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “There are five animals for which there is no blame on the one who kills them: crows, kites (hawk-like birds), mice/rats, scorpions and mad dogs.” [Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1828]
Source: http://islamqa.info/en/ref/2896/kill%20animals
It is prohibited to eat the meat of these animals which the
Prophet (sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) had ordered us to kill.
• Kullu maa naha an-Nabi (sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) 'an
qatalahu (An-namalah, an-nahalah, al-hudhud)-
All the animals or birds that Prophet (sallAllahu 'alayhi wa
sallam) had forbade us from killing.
Ex: Ants, bees, hoopoes (hudhud), sparrow-hawks etc.
Narrated by Abu Dawood (5267) and Ibn Majaah (3224) from Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade killing four kinds of animals: ants, bees, hoopoes and sparrow-hawks. [Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood]
Source: http://islamqa.info/en/ref/111827/hoopoe
It is prohibited to eat these animals which the Prophet
(sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) had forbade killing.
Al-Hashraat – The Insects
Most of the insects are forbidden from eating -> haram
For ex: Cockroaches, flies, bedbugs, mosquitoes, lice, beetles,
centipedes, millipedes etc.
LM84 .ت ا$Oا.4"ا Al-Haywaanaat al-Bahriyyah – The Sea Animals
According to scholarly consensus all the animals in the sea are
permissible to eat. All the fish found in the sea even if they are
dead, they are considered as halal.
Allah says in the Qur'an-
رة Oو -. D ـ أ; .- %7 ٱ$ وطCD ۥ 9“Lawful to you is (the pursuit of) water game and its use for food — for the benefit of yourselves and those who travel” [al-Maa’idah 5:96]
Al-Bukhaari narrated that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “Water game means what is hunted, and its food is what the sea throws out (onto the shore).”
Al-Bukhaari narrated from Shurayh, the companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), that he said: “Everything in the sea is madhbooh (slaughtered).”
But there is a dispute between the scholars about whether the animals
that live on both land and water such as turtles, frog, crocodile, crab
etc. are allowed to eat or not (halal/haram). And Allah knows best.

Halaath Tahrum Feeha-al-At'amah–
Cases in which the (halal) Food is Forbidden
The meat of those animals which is lawful /halal becomes haram
because of the circumstances the animal died. For example: The
meat of the animals such as cow, goat, sheep, camel etc. which is
halal becomes haram under some circumstances which are mentioned
in Surat Al-Maa'idah, 5:3->
Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala says:
Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than
Allah , and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a
violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of
horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten,
except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars,
and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through
divining arrows. That is grave disobedience. This day
those who disbelieve have despaired of [defeating] your
religion; so fear them not, but fear Me. This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor
upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.
But whoever is forced by severe hunger with no
inclination to sin - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and
Merciful. [Surat Al-Maa'idah, 5:3]
Forbidden food for us:
• Al- Maytah (the dead animals)
• Blood
• The flesh of Swine
• That which has been dedicated to other than Allah
Means what has been slaughtered as a sacrifice with the invocation of a name other than the Name of Allah (for ex: to slaughter in the name of any idols or anything other than Allah)
The name of Allah should be mentioned while slaughtering the animal. (The correct manner of mentioning the name of Allah at slaughtering is, "Bismillah Allahu Akbar" (in the name of Allah, Allah is the Most Great).
Allah Ta'ala says:
"Then eat of that over which the name of Allah has been mentioned, if you believe in His signs."(6:118)
"And do not eat of that over which the name of Allah has not been mentioned, for truly that is impiety.... "(6:121)
Al-Bukhaari (5558) and Muslim (1966) narrated that Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sacrificed two horned black and white rams. I saw him placing his foot on their sides, and he said the name of Allaah and he said takbeer, then he slaughtered them with his own hand.
• That which has been killed by strangling or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by the goring of horns
- The strangled: an animal which has been strangled, for example, by a rope around its neck, or suffocated, as for instance by
putting its head into something which produces suffocation . - The beaten (by a violent blow): an animal which has been beaten
to death by a club or similar object .
It is prohibited to stun the animals by stroking or using electricity for these kinds of stunning hurt the animal and the Prophet (Peace be upon Him) interdicts us from torturing or hurting animals and on the contrary ordered us to be kind and benevolent with them
especially at slaughtering.
- The fallen: an animal which dies as a result of a fall from a high
place, or by falling into a gully or ravine . - The gored: an animal which dies as a result of being gored by
the horns of another animal.
• That which has been (partly) eaten by a wild animal
• That which is sacrificed (slaughtered) on An-Nusub (stone
altars)
This means those animals which are sacrificed (slaughtered) to idols.
Although the animals mentioned in this Ayah are types of permissible
cattle (except for swine), they become impermissible under the circumstances that the Ayah (5:3) specifies.
So these are the different types of foods or animals which are
prohibited to eat according to the Sharee'ah.
We can find how much Islam takes care of even hurting the animals,
SubhanAllah!
It's very important for us to make sure that the meat of chicken or the
cattle we buy is slaughtered according to the Sharee'ah and it is
halal.
This is all about the halal and haram foods.
