Family Matters – Or Does It?

I had originally planned to write this editorialon one of Gary’s favorite topics: "Elves – WhatAre They Good For?" Unfortunately, our legaldepartment informs me that there are peopleout there who actually play elves, and don’t justuse them for NPCs. (You know who you are.Sickos.) Therefore, it was decided that a changeof topic would be more appropriate.

So for all you GameMasters out there, I’mgoing to delve back into the HackMasterarchives and discuss two of the more infamoustables from HackMaster 1st edition (consider-ing all the strange mail we received, it’s uncer-tain whether or not this will make it back into4th edition). You players should stop readingnow – that’s right, you heard me! Skip the edi-torial and get right to the story!

Okay, now that the players are gone, we can getdown to business. Have you ever been too busywith real life (yeah, right) to come up with anadventure for the next gaming session? Well,you can bow down and kiss my feet now, thankyou. Because with this article, your players willnever know the difference.

First, take a look at your copies of their charac-ter sheets. Now find the ‘CharacterBackground’ box. You know, the one that allyour players are supposed to fill out when theycreate their characters? Now read it carefully. (Ifthey didn’t write anything down, you’re notdoing your job right – but that’s a discussion forlater.) Are there any family members theyhaven’t seen in a long time? Maybe a brother or

a sister? Bringing back a lost sister is a great wayto tug at your players’ heartstrings. Especially ifyou don’t mind messing with your players’heads.

First, choose the family member you want tobring back. Now, roll 1d10 on the ‘RelativeTrouble’ table to discover what happened tothem after the hero left them to go adventuring:

Relative Trouble1 gains magical power and tries to take over the world2 feels abandoned and sets out to seek revenge3 prostitute4 multiple personality disorder5 crime-fighting vigilante6 beggar7 henchman (hireling, torch-bearer, etc)8 becomes a greater hero than the player9 has body part cut off10 king (lord, duke, etc)

If you’re feeling really evil, you can even rollmultiple times and add the results together. Butwhat, I hear you say, do I do if my players leftthat box blank? That’s easy. Just roll on the‘Unexpected Relative’ box as well. (And ofcourse, everyone has parents, so don’t forgetabout those).
