Wishing you a happy holiday season

and a new year full of joy

The board, staff and families of Habitat for Humanity - New York City

The Elboute family lived in a large, old building with small rooms and few closets. There was hardly any space inside for the girls to play.

The surrounding neighborhood was rough. The Elboutes mostly kept to themselves. Because of the high crime rate, their mother, Kelly, wouldn’t allow Salma and Hanae to play outside.

Now the Elboutes finally have a home that is big enough to live comfortably. The girls play outside with other neighborhood children and feel like they are part of a community. In their drawing, the girls picture themselves playing in the snow while their mother watches over them from inside their warm, safe, energy-efficient and affordable Habitat-NYC home.

”My new home is better. I know my neighbors. Before, my mom was scared. But here, it’s safe to play outside.

“—Hanae, 8

When we were in the old place, I was sometimes scared to go outside. Also, it was really small. Sometimes we couldn’t even play in our home because there was no place to play. Now I can go outside and play every day after I do my homework.

”—Salma, 11
