Habit #1

“My brother wanted to go to

Applebee’s for dinner,

but I preferred to go to

Outback Steak House. I

told my dad that I

decided that my brother

could choose this time,

and I could choose the

restaurant the next time.”

Habit #2

“My friend told me that her

family was having money

problems. I understood

where she was coming

from, and instead of

asking her to go with me

to a movie at the mall, I

asked her to go play

soccer in the park with

me.”

Habit #3

“I knew the answer, but I

remembered not to blurt it

out, so I raised my hand

and waited to be called on.

It’s fair if everyone gets a

chance to answer

questions.”

Habit #4

“Hmmmm - I wonder what I would have done if I was in the same situation as the character in the novel I’m reading. Would I have solved her problem like she did? How am I like that character? I think she’s so cool!”

Habit #5

“I made this really rockin’

timeline last year for social

studies! I wasn’t satisfied

with it until it was easy to

read and had all of the

information I needed to

present. My teacher told

me that my information

was very clear.”

Habit #6

“I wanted to learn

how to do an

overhead serve in

tennis and I just

wasn’t successful.

I kept working and

working on my

serve until I could

show how to do

one!”

Habit #7

“When we studied

oceanography in class, I

asked my dad to take me

to the beach. I played in

the water and smelled the

fresh ocean air. I looked

at some shells first hand

and listened to the

seagulls.”

Habit #8

“I did some reflective thinking

about where I would like to go

for summer camp and decided

which camp would be best for

me. I listed some positive and

negative things about all three

camps, looked at the list,

thought about what I put on the

list, and made my decision.”

Habit #9

“Geez, I remember last year that I waited until the last minute to work on my science project – I am NOT going to do that again this year! That was too stressful, and my mom got mad at me for putting it off!”

Habit #10

“I am so glad we got to work in groups in math today – I learned a new problem solving strategy from one of my group members. Together we came up with a great solution.”

Habit #11

“WOW, did you real this cool poem about

9/11? The way the speaker spoke about

the terror in her heart, the emptiness in her

soul, the tears in her eyes—I am just

amazed at her way with words.”

Habit #12 “I double-checked all of my

answers to make sure I had done

all of my computations correctly. If

I go over-budget on this birthday

party, my parents will be upset

with me. Let’s see, I have the

guest list, the necessary food

quantities, and today’s Food Lion

circular. I will be right on the

money with my plan!”

Habit #13 “I just LOVE dolphins! I don’t know much

about them, so I’m going to ask my mom if

I can do Internet research on places where

we can swim with dolphins on vacation. I

intend to make a film about dolphins and

create a foundation at school to adopt

one!”

Habit #14

“Dude, it must be so cool to

go scuba diving! Look at

these pictures of what it

looks like deep in the

ocean! The coral and the

fish are so colorful! I have

always wanted to learn

how to scuba dive! Let’s

call the Dive Center and

take lessons!”

Habit #15

“When I spilled milk on my shirt at lunch accidentally, I made a joke about it before anyone could laugh at me. I said, ‘I guess I should have worn my sister’s shirt! I wouldn’t have cared if I spilled milk on her shirt!’ Everyone laughed with me instead of laughing at me.”

Habit #16

“I thought I knew everything about being a quarterback until I met Coach Tom. He is so good about explaining the plays that we use in practice—I’m really learning a lot. They are pretty complicated, but now I understand them.”

Bonus #1

“I had this great idea for an

English project, but I

wasn’t sure if my teacher

would go for it. Guess

what? I took a chance

and asked him, and he

loved the idea! I’m glad I

took a risk and asked

him!”

Bonus #2

“I got mad at a friend and I was ready to call her a really bad name. I thought about it and knew that it wasn’t right to do that, so I just walked away. I’m so glad I did; she was upset because she had had an awful argument with her mom.”
