DESCRIPTION & OUTCOMES

This course is designed to enrich your appreciation for the role(s) of textiles, as goods & signifiers, in cultures past, present and future.

This course will enhance your visual experience(in other art history courses & in general), as textiles are not only works of art in their own right, but often feature (with)in other art forms.

The hands-on component of this course is mandatory and designed to be analytical and reflective. It has a two-fold purpose: 1) to help you develop & recognize associated problem-solving skills 2) to acknowledge the social and manual aspects inherent in textile production.

This is a survey course; organization is thematic by technique, illuminated with case studies from a broad range of periods and cultures

There is no required textbook for this class. Basic reading list is provided (see next page). Familiarity with on-line sources is encouraged.
