God created each person, and He loves His creation. We should not judge who is worthy to hear God’s Word or not. Often we don’t want to talk to a certain person about Jesus because of who he is. We are warned that when we judge others, we will be judged with the same measure. This should make us think twice and show more mercy than malice. When we read these verses from the book of Luke, the verses should make us stop and think. Before we are quick to judge others, we should be concerned about how our own lives look. Where have we fallen short? How would we want others to look at us? Judging is discussed several times throughout Scripture. There was the woman who was caught in the act of adultery and brought before Jesus (John 8:1- 11). Jesus told them that the one who was without sin should cast the first stone. The problem was that there was not one among the crowd who had lived a sinless life except Jesus, and He forgave her and told her to sin no more. God shows no favoritism (Romans 2:11). In Acts 10, we read the account of Peter and Cornelius. Peter learned that God did not want him to judge everyone who was different than him. He was to share God’s truth with everyone. Romans 2:1-3 tells us that we should not judge others when we are doing the same thing, sinning. God is righteous and only He has the right to pass judgment. Lesson 1June 2, 2019

Before you begin your study, pray and ask God to help you see others as He sees them.

There was the woman who was caught in the act of adultery and brought before Jesus (John 8:1-11).

Sometimes we judge others by just looking at the outside. God sees the heart. We should be less concerned about what others do and more concerned with what is in your heart.

Place the attendance chart and other visuals on the wall before the beginning of class. Give each child a sticker to place on the attendance chart. Discuss with the students the Where Will I Spend Eternity? Visual.

Choose one or more:

You will need a black robe, a gavel and a law book to remind the children of a judge. Lay these items on a table or dress up as the judge before the students arrive. When the students come into class and place their stickers on the attendance chart, have them guess what the items have in common or if you dressed up, who you are. Give some hints, like tapping the gavel on the table and saying, “Innocent or guilty?” Then tell them that they will be learning about how we are not the judge.

Have your dry erase board or paper ready to play guess that letter with the word judging. Play the game by writing each letter on the board one at a time letting the children pronounce the letters then the full word when your students first come into class. Then give them their stickers for the attendance chart. Discuss what the word means.

You will need a small stepladder with six steps. Have a beanbag for each child. Make sure to have a way to tell each child’s beanbag apart. Place the ladder against one wall in your classroom. You will need it through Lesson 6 of this quarter. You will need to display the Lesson 1 Share Visual as well. When each student arrives, hand him a beanbag. Read him the memory verse for Lesson 1. If the child points to the beam of wood with the words Judge Not on the visual because he was listening, he should place his beanbag on the first step of the ladder. For nonreaders in your class, you will want to point to the blue tear drop shape with the memory verse as you read it aloud and ask students to point to the corresponding colored tear drop on the beam.

Ask for prayer requests if it is not too distracting. You may want to give the children a limit of one or two requests.

Remind the children that prayer is when we talk to God and we need to be respectful.

When you pray, ask God to help each student not to be judgmental towards others.

Use your Bible and today’s Scripture text (Luke 6:37-42) or page 1 of the student leaflet, to share today’s biblical narrative.

Choose one or more:

You will need to bring a large stick or beam and a twig with you to class. Label both the beam and twig as sin and have them laid out on the table for the children to look at. As you teach the lesson, compare the two. Talk about how the Pharisees were like those who had the beam in their eyes and the disciples were like those who had a mote or a small piece of wood in theirs. Have a discussion with the children about why it is wrong to judge others. We need to be concerned about how our lives appear and see our own sins instead of only pointing out the wrongs of others.

You will need some biblical outfits for children to wear if you have them available. Tell the children that they will be acting out the lesson and assign each child to be a disciple. Have those who are acting out the disciples to sit as one child pretends to be Jesus and repeats certain key words or phrases as you share today’s Scripture text. A good phrase for the child playing Jesus to repeat is the memory verse. If time, allow children the opportunity to take turns playing Jesus and repeating the words you have Jesus say in the narrative.

You will need glue, cotton balls and green strips. Your green strips can be slips of green construction paper, green crinkle tissue or even green crepe paper cut apart in strips. As you share the lesson with the students, have them turn to page 4 of their student leaflet. Let them color the picture first while you share the lesson. Then, help them glue the clouds and grass onto the picture. Discuss with them about how today’s lesson is apart of a bigger lesson Jesus taught called the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus teaches us many things but learning not to judge is one of the most difficult to follow.
