After weather forced our annual banquet to be postponed in February, the Chamber was fortunate to enjoy a beautiful day for the 7th Annual Golf Tournament, presented by Eagle Communications.

The Chamber is appreciative to all the businesses, golfers and volunteers who participated in the event May 6 at Smoky Hill Country Club.

Below are the sponsors who contributed toward the success, and we encourage you to share a thank you with them the next time you see or work with them.

As we leave the cold winter months behind us

and slide into the hot days of summer, I imagine many people will start chatting more with their neighbors over backyard fences, companies will host employee picnics or families will take off on destinations to create some special memories. Warm weather is nature’s way of bringing people together.

Like Mother Nature, the Hays Area Chamber aids in the gathering process, mixing strangers and business acquaintances to create a culture of interaction and friendship. A member’s ribbon cutting is the perfect introduction for a new business or employee, while Chamber Chats serve as the community-wide connector. For employees new to Hays, these events help provide a social network that is often as important for overall success as the benefit package. In turn, younger employees born and raised in Ellis County have an opportunity to be recognized for the professionals they have become.

In the sales world, account executives dread the “cold call,” the emotionally draining aspect of reaching out to a stranger to possibly be hung up on or turned away. However, each week through the Chamber, I see the groundwork of many relationships taking place.

I encourage you to warm up with one of our upcoming events, connect with a former friend or develop a new friendship. We would love to have you join us.

Nothing warms our hearts more.

The most popular option for Internet-accessed movies and TV shows is the streaming service Netflix. The exponential growth in customers has created network challenges for

streaming services such as Netflix, and Internet services providers like Nex-Tech. To minimize network traffic issues and improve the user experience, Nex-Tech is partnering with Netflix in its Open Connect program. Instead of accessing video content from servers thousands of miles away, Netflix subscribers with Nex-Tech Internet service are viewing content from servers virtually in their backyard.

Astra Bank announced the addition of Cody Palen to their lending team. Palen and his wife, Megan, are graduates of Kansas State University and lifetime residents of western Kansas. He previously was employed with a regional bank in western Kansas.

Dallas Haselhorst, a partner with Sicoir Computer Technologies, has been invited to speak at the 2016 Nagios World Conference. Nagios is a highly customizable platform often recognized as the leader in IT infrastructure monitoring for networks and servers. While Nagios is standardly used for stability and performance monitoring, Haselhorst was able to develop a new, security-focused usage by automating many of the recommendations found in the National Security Agency whitepaper titled “Spotting the Adversary.”

Nex-Tech’s Advertising Solutions Team recently received two TeleChoice Awards from NTCA — the Rural Broadband Association. The annual awards program honors excellence in member telco public relations and marketing. Entries in seven categories — annual reports, complete branding campaign, complete marketing campaigns, customer newsletters, single-target print publications, websites and local video content — were judged on innovative strategies, design, writing, creativity and other elements specific to each category. In each category, a winner was selected from three divisions based on the number of access lines served by the entrant and two production divisions: “in-house” and “outsourced.” Nex-Tech was awarded first in the “in-house” division for the website and complete marketing campaign categories. Of the 33 NTCA member companies that received TeleChoice Awards, Nex-Tech was one of only three companies that received awards in two categories.

The Hays Area Young Professionals hosted their annual adult prom May 7.

Sixty adult prom-goers were entertained by the DJ services of Cameron Shoemaker. The VFW was decked out in red, white and blue in honor of the theme inspired by the political elections that will take place in November.
