THE PREZ SAYS…. Some people don’t like mowing their lawns, personally I love it. I once had a reel lawn mower and it did a great job. I would sit back after mowing and marvel at the lawn. Now I have a riding lawn mower. It does a good job, but not the job that the reel lawn mower did. I bring this up because as a group, you all do a good job of keep up your lawn, but a few of you need to get with it. If you don’t like mowing and those weeds are getting thick….KILL THE WEEDs. There are a couple of products that will do just that and not kill the grass. Now once you have killed the weed you won’t have the mow as often. So, KILL THE WEEDS. This will be one of the points you will be asked to vote for a system to fine folks that don’t comply. By the way, if you have a medical problem and can’t mow, give me a call, I love to mow. SIGNS OF SPRING

In early spring one takes a second look at their or a neighbor’s yard. Look, you say, what Mother Nature has provided – beautiful purple flowers covering lawns. Those flowers are known as Henbit classified as a cool-season weed found throughout the United States. Henbit is a member of the mint family. It’s stem, leaves, and flowers, raw or cooked, are edible. Shortly after the Henbits arrive, here comes the dandelions. Dandelion is a perennial weed with a substantial taproot. The leaves are invasive by pushing down and killing grass due to lack of sunlight. Once the yellow flowers start dying out the seed – those white parachutes -- are carried by the wind to the ground.

Maintaining a healthy lawn will help prevent the seeds from developing. Mr. Jimmy Smitherman of the local county extension office stated when when weeds are blooming to mow the lawn and bag the clippings. Preemergences and/or pulling up the weeds keeps the flowers from spreading seeds.

Editor’s Note: One of our good homeowner has the “ring” doorbell system. A solicitor came to her door within the last month. When she did not answer, she observed the man feeling the top door frame on her cell phone. Could he be looking for a key? I bethe was and looked under the doormat too. Just a reminder to be careful and let’s watch out for each other.

On April 29th, Heloise Hints in our local newspaper stated that we should feed our ducks lettuce, thawed raw peas, oats, birdseed, cooked rice, seedless grapesand sweet corn. But don’t feed bread which has no nutritional value.

BACK YARDS

Remember being told the front yard is designed for the neighbors while the back yard isfor you? Have you ever wondered what peoples’ back yard looks like? Below are pictures of four back yards representing many wonderful yards in our neighborhood.

Below is Jana and Steve Michaud’s yard. The first time I visited it, I was floored. I could not believe a back yard in our neighborhood could support this type of landscape. The yard is completely shaded with mature trees and 43 Japanese maple trees Steve planted. Also planted are ferns, hostas, palms and many other shade loving plants.

The yard to the right belongs to William and Deborah Krause. The yard is open to the undeveloped property next to us. The Krauses’ can either sit on their patio or at the fire pit area to enjoy the wildlife – such as deer, rabbits, raccoon, snakes, birds, and coyotes.

The back yard to the left belong to Mr. C and Mrs. J. The plants and trees in the back are all edible. The trees include pear, apple, persimmon, lemon, kumquat, and date. There are vegetables, herbs and a muscadine grape vine. The plant to the right produces dragon fruit. This reddish fruit is found in the grocery stores in the fall and cost about $2.50 each.

Madam S has designed a relaxing back yard that can be enjoyed from her covered patio. The landscape includes camellia bushes next to the fence. The camellia flower represents the State of Alabama. In the center is a Japanese maple. Other bushes include azaleas, roses, and hydrangeas. Madam S use to have bird feeders until one day she looked out and the yard contained 12-13 squirrels.

The yard to the right belong to this editor. The yard has everything the above peoplehave. An entertainment area, a relaxing view from the patio, vegetable/herb area and a chance to be with nature. The problem with this yard is it is a complete disaster. Power washing the deck, complete the renovation of a raised

bed, get rid of the junk laying around, complete planting things purchased last year, etc. are on top of the do list.

Wish me luck!
