A stylus is that part of the probewhich makes contact with thecomponent, causing the probe toproduce its output signal.Renishaw has used its experiencein probe design for CMM, CNCmachine tool, and scanningapplications, to develop acomprehensive range of styli thatcomplements the probe itself. Styli,previously only available for specialapplications, have recently beenincorporated into the standardrange.

Renishaw has also developedspherical form styli for scanningapplications where extremelyaccurate copying is essential.

This brochure highlights the criticalfeatures of each stylus and enablesselection of the best design forevery application.

The type and size of stylus to beused is dictated by the feature tobe measured. In all cases,maximum rigidity and sphericity ofthe stylus tip are essential. Greatcare is taken to ensure thatlocation faces give maximumstiffness, whilst stylus weights areoptimised by using a variety ofmaterials to suit a particular probeand application.

The ruby stylus balls used on manystyli are manufactured inSwitzerland to Renishaw’s exactingstandards, and are drilled andspigotted on to the stems to ensuremaximum integrity.

Using other manufacturers stylioften degrades performance dueeither to poor ball roundness,location, thread fits or overalldesign. Such styli are prone toexcessive bending at the probetrigger point and may have a greatlyreduced EWL (Effective WorkingLength) due to tolerance mismatch.

The GF “High performance” range ofstyli is constructed from specialisedcarbon fibre reinforced material,Renishaw GF, which combinesmaximum stiffness, bothlongitudinal and rotational, with lowmassThis material has ideal thermaland environmental stability, withextremely high resistance to impactand fracture. Probe triggerperformance is optimisedparticularly when an applicationdemands a long stylus assembly.

The trigger force for all probes iscritical for accuracy, stylus carryingcapability and reliable operation,and can be easily optimised usingRenishaw’s Gram Gauge.

This book has been designed to be user-friendly so the styli are listed primarily by thread size then length and finally by ball size. For reasons ofclarity, Renishaw’s probes are listed below by thread size. The styli will also fit other manufacturers’ probes directly or by utilising one of thespecial styli adaptors (see accessory section).

Renishaw probes are capable of using any of the smaller threaded styli by using the appropriate styli adaptors (see accessory section).The performance and functionality of a probing system can be significantly influenced by the choice of stylus assembly used. Please refer toindividual product user documentation for recommended stylus choice and product limits.

CHOOSING STYLI FOR INSPECTIONIn the majority of probing applications to maximise accuracy werecommend that you:-

KEEP STYLI SHORT AND STIFFThe more the stylus bends or deflects, the lower the accuracy.Probing with the minimum stylus length for your application is recommended and where possible the use of one piece styli is suggested. Probing with excessive styli/extension combinationsshould therefore be avoided.

KEEP THE STYLUS BALL AS LARGE AS POSSIBLEThis will ensure maximum ball/stem clearance whilst providing agreater yet rigid Effective Working Length (EWL). Using larger rubyballs also reduces the effect of surface finish of the component being inspected.

Effective Working Length (EWL) is the penetration that can beachieved by any ruby ball stylus before its stem fouls against thefeature. Generally the larger the ball diameter the greater the EWL (See below).

EWL can also be affected by assembly tolerances. For this reasonRenishaw styli are assembled to exacting standards in controlledconditions.

CHOOSING STYLI FOR SCANNINGGENERALThe choice of scanning styli will be dependent on the scanningapplication and the type of scanning probe used.

Use a stylus which has the same diameter as the finished cuttingtool used to produce the part.

Keep the stylus as short as possible to prevent excessive bending,but ensure the stylus is long enough to prevent scanning on theshank.

APPLICATION CONSIDERATIONSUse a ball ended stylus where possible.

If the part to be scanned has undercuts (which cause the ball tobecome trapped) use a parallel sided stylus.

For a profile application where the height of the profile is not a constant Z use a parallel sided stylus.

PROBE CONSIDERATIONSThe stylus force applied from the scanning probe should be a maximum of 50 grams on the SP600/SPSM (Cyclone) probes and1000 grams on the SP2 range of probes.

The weight of the stylus on the SP600/SPSM (Cyclone) probesshould not exceed 20 grams.

Some of the most commonly used styli for scanning have beenhighlighted throughout the document by an ‘(†)’.

1-2 EXPLANATION OF STYLI TYPES - SECTIONS 2, 3, 4 and 5

These are suitable for the majority of probing applications.Theyincorporate highly spherical industrial ruby balls. Ruby is anextremely hard ceramic material and hence wear of stylus balls isminimised. It is also of low density keeping tip mass to a minimum which avoids unwanted probe triggers caused bymachine motion or vibration. Ruby balls are available mounted on avariety of materials including non-magnetic stainless steel, ceramicand carbide, to maintain stiffness over the total range of styli.

These can be used to inspect a variety of different features.

Using star styli to inspect the extreme points of internal featuressuch as the sides or grooves in a bore, minimises the need to movethe probe, due to their multi-tip probing capability.

Each tip on a star stylus requires datuming in the same manner as asingle ball stylus.

These should not be used for conventional XY Probing.Designed for the measurement of thread forms, specific points andscribed lines (to lower accuracy).The use of radius end pointer styli allows more accurate datumingand probing of features, and can also be used to inspect the location of very small holes.

These are ideal for probing deep features and bores in X, Y and Z directions with the need to datum only one ball.In addition, the effects of very rough surfaces can be averaged outby probing with such a large diameter ball.

These ‘thin sections’ of a large sphere are usually used to probe undercuts and grooves.

Although probing with the “spherical edge” of a simple disc is effectively the same as probing on or about the equator of a large stylus ball, only a small area of this ball surface is available for contact. Hence thinner discs require careful angular alignment toensure correct contact of the disc surface with the feature beingprobed.

A simple disc requires datuming on only one diameter (usually in aring gauge) but l imits effective probing to only X and Y directions.

Adding a radius end roller allows you to datum and hence probe inthe Z direction, providing the centre of the ‘radius end roller’extends beyond the diameter of the probe.

The radius end roller can be datumed on a sphere or a slip gauge.Rotating and locking the disc about its centre axis allows the ‘radiusend roller’ to be positioned to suit the application.

Disc may also have an M2 threaded centre to allow the fixing of acentre stylus, giving the additional flexibility of probing the bottomof deep bores (where access for the disc may be limited).

These are used for probing holes in thin sheet material, probingvarious threaded features and locating the centres of tapped holes.

Ball ended cylinder styli allow full datuming and probing in X, Y andZ directions thus allowing surface inspection to be carried out.

These provide added probing penetration by extending the stylusaway from the probe.However, using stylus extensions can reduce accuracy due to lossof rigidity.

The tolerances to which tools can be set depends upon the flatnessand parallelism of the stylus tip to the machine axis. Fine adjustmentis provided on all probes and probe holders to allow these settingsto be achieved.Where rotating tools are to be datumed for diameter the tools mustbe rotated in reverse to the cutting direction.

5-WAY STYLUS CENTRE (See H)

Maximum probing flexibility with a single probe is provided by astylus centre. Taking up to 5 styli of the same screw thread (M2,M4 or M5), this accessory allows you to build styli configurationsto your own specifications.

This accessory gives full adjustment in both the vertical and horizontal planes, allowing the stylus to be orientated to probeangled features. This is especially useful when the probe cannot becorrectly orientated by the probe head, or access for the head islimited eg. under edges.

Styli and accessories are available in a wide selection of sets ranging from a small high precision set of the most frequently usedstyli, to a fully comprehensive set to meet virtually every inspectionneed.Complete probing kits are also available which include a probe,probe head, extension bars and styli.All Renishaw stylus sets and probing kits can be custom made tosuit your requirements.

GRAM GAUGE

The gram gauge can be used to adjust, reset and check trigger forcesettings on all standard Renishaw touch trigger probes.Setting the optimum trigger force using the gram gauge maximisesprobe performance.

Renishaw will design and manufacture a specific stylus to suit yourrequirements. Probe and application needs are fully considered.(See section 6-7).

These allow M2, M3 and M4 thread styli to be interchanged on alltouch trigger probes with only a few exceptions.

(With the M5/M4 adaptor and SATF6 adaptor, Renishaw styli mayalso be used on other manufacturers’ probing systems).

Important points to note:

Using styli with a thread size smaller than that of the probe normallyreduces the probe accuracy due to lower stylus stiffness.

Using styli with a thread size larger than that of the probe maycause false triggers.

Designed specifically for mounting styli correctly into probes andfor the construction of specialised stylus combinations. Stylus toolsare designed to yield or breakout when excessive tightening force isapplied avoiding damage to threads of both styli and probe.

The Renishaw Universal Datum Sphere facilitates easy probedatuming. The Datum ball mount enables orientation to suit a widevariety of stylus configurations, this product is traceable toNPL/ISO 9000 standards.

The gram gauge allows the optimum trigger forceto be set to maximise probe performance on allstandard Renishaw touch trigger probes.

Each datum sphere is made from hard wearingtungsten carbide and is supplied with its own certificate, giving ball diameter and roundness. All sphere measurements performed on equipment tracable to UK (NPL) standards.
