Attention: For conducting any type of toolface orientation, the SPT GyroTracer must always have ashock absorber connected and have the proper centralizers on the top and bottom of the gyro.

In drilling, often their maybe a necessity for correctly orientating a wedge and the downhole motor (bothdownhole) in order to kickoff in the right direction from a pre-determined depth from an already existingwell. There are basically two types of wells in terms of inclination: vertical and inclined wells. Wellswith an inclination of more than 2.0 degrees from the vertical are technically considered inclined wells.Wells with an inclination less than 2.0 degrees from vertical are considered vertical wells. The SPToperating software and GyroTracer give the option to perform these orientations in both inclined and vertical wells.

Let us examine in more detail these situations:

Orientation in vertical hole1. Assemble the gyro and telemetry and connect the top and bottom centralizers, mule shoe stinger and

    shock absorber.

    2. Lay the tool string horizontally on stands on the catwalk or stable ground. This procedure is donewith no power or wireline connected to the gyro. The azimuth direction is not an issue (Diagram 1)

    3. Connect the assembled tool string to the cable head and wireline . Have the mule shoe stinger

keyway pointing straight up (Diagram 2) .

    Diagram 2

    4. A short, heavy duty spirit level and wrench is required. Place the sprit level across the flat section of the mule shoe stinger keyway . Gently rotate the whole assembly with a pipe wrench until the

bubble is accurately centered. Grip the pipe wrench somewhere near the top of the mule shoe or bottom of the shock absorber (Diagram 3)

    5. Start the gyro software as normal and enter in all the correct well information in Settings screen, and most importantly select the correct calibration and enter the correct latitude for that location.

    6. Start the Gyro and warm it up in the usual procedure. Do not turn ON . It is very important that thegyro assemble is not touched or moved from position once the mule shoe keyway has been centered as this could move the mule shoe before the highside has been reset.

    Diagram 3

    7. Open the Toolface window (Figure 1) . Click on Reset Toolface and click Yes (Figure 2). Doingthis procedure has now set the toolface highside to 0/360 . The keyway in the mule shoe stinger isnow set to 0 degrees toolface . Wait 10 seconds for reset to register.

    8. Take a survey using Gravity toolface (Figure 3) . This will take just a few seconds. Gravity toolfaceshould now show 0/360 degrees. This is just to check that the resetting of TF highside hasregistered. Please note: If Gravity toolface is showing a different figure besides 0/360 after taking asurvey then repeat steps 7 and 8 again.

    9. Lower the toolstring into the well. Turn the gyro ON and start running the tool down the well to therequired depth where the orientation will take place. The gyro must be completely warm as normal

before taking a Gyroscopic toolface survey.

    10. Seat the mule shoe stinger to the UBHO at slow speed of no more than 7 10 meters/minute and lock to locating pin.

    11. Run a survey using Gyroscopic toolface (Figure 4). This survey will show you the azimuthdirection of the high side . Each Gyroscopic toolface survey will take 1 minute 30 seconds.

    12. After taking a Gyroscopic toolface survey, pull tool up 10 meters. Lower tool down slowly againand lock mule shoe to pin and repeat Gyroscopic toolface survey again.

    13. This procedure should be repeated a total of 3 4 times.

    14. Orientate the whipstock assembly to the necessary geographical (true north) azimuth. Once in position, click on Gyroscopic survey to show you the position of the highside. Repeat this procedure another 2 times to check results match. Pull tool up 10 meters between each survey and lock mule shoe each time at 7 10 meters per minute.

    15. Once drilling has continued at the kickoff position, return to the well when approx 5 meters has beendrilled. Run the tool down the well and survey the sidetrack.

    Orientation in inclined hole

    1. Follow steps 1 10 as above that is shown in Orientation in vertical hole

    2. Once the mule shoe stinger has locked to the locating pin, take a Gravity toolface survey. This willtake just 2 seconds (Figure 5)

    3. After the Gravity toolface survey and while the mule shoe is still locked to the locating pin, run anormal survey to check the current azimuth direction of wedge.

    4. Pull tool up 10 meters. Lower tool down slowly again and lock mule shoe to pin and repeat Gravity toolface survey again. Check that it matches with previous survey.

    5. After the Gravity toolface survey and while the mule shoe is still locked to the locating pin, run anormal survey to check the current azimuth direction of wedge. Check that this matches with the

    previous survey.

    6. This procedure should be repeated a total of 3 4 times.

    7. Orientate the drill string assemble to the necessary toolface position in reference to the targetazimuth.

    8. Click on Gravity toolface survey to show you the position of the TF highside (Figure 6)

    11. Take a Gravity toolface survey

    12. Run a normal survey to check azimuth direction

    13. This procedure should be repeated a total of 2 3 times to check results

    14. If drill string has not been orientated to correct position, repeat from Step 7

    16. Once drilling has continued at the kickoff position, return to the well when approx 5 meters has beendrilled. Run the tool down the well and survey the sidetrack.

    Important notes:

Gyroscopic toolface orientation only applies in wireline mode for the SPT gyro system. It cannot be performed in memory mode.

Please assemble the gyro, mule shoe, shock absorber and centralizers etc with the Gyro OFF.

Always have Gyro ON when traversing downhole to seat mule shoe stinger to UBHO

For the last 20 meters of lowering the tool down the hole, slow down the winch speed to 7 10 meters per minute to lock mule shoe to locating pin.

Always use a suitable shock absorber.

If the last 2 tips are ignored, this will greatly increase the chance of damage to the gyro sensor.

    Accessories required:

Feedthru centralizer Bottom centralizer Shock absorber

Mule shoe stin ger Cable head

    Pipe wrench Spirit level

Please note: When orientating with gyroscopic toolface, this method will give you a direct measurementto the target azimuth.

When orientating with gravity toolface, this method will give you an indirect measurement to the targetazimuth.

Gyroscopic toolface will give the best accuracy at vertical. At 2 from vertical the accuracy in azimuththat can be achieved will be approximately +/- 3.0 . If you prefer to use gyroscopic toolface for a directmeasurement to the target azimuth, then you can still use gyroscopic toolface at 2-3 inclination fromvertical but will not have as accurate results as at vertical.

    CAUTION

The Gyro module is integrated with very sensitive parts, most of all, the Gyro sensor. At all times, thismodule must be handled with extreme care whether its out in the field, in the workshop, duringtransportation or in the office.

Small knocks may not damage the gyro immediately, though small knocks occurring over a period of time may cause fatigue of the Gyro sensor and then possible complete failure of the Gyro sensor.

Never move the Gyro while ON at any speed faster than very slow. It is always recommended to turnOFF the Gyro if you will be moving it around. If you will be moving it around while ON, especiallywith lateral or side movements, please do this very slowly and listen to the sound of the Gyro spinning. If noise increases or changes, slow down. Never turn the gyro on until the tool is in the hole and

remember to switch off before you pull out of hole.
