ERIKA FLORY

Erika’s love of knitting has spanned a lifetime and has taken her in many directions: from knitting for her family and herself; to teaching knitting to the blind and visually impaired; to having a home-based craft business; to working in knitting retail; to designing; to co-owning a micro yarn company. She finds inspiration for designs in everything around her: color, texture, details in vintage knitting patterns, costumes on the large and small screen, stitch dictionaries, and yarn itself. Erika’s designs are notable for their simple sophistication and use of shape, texture, and color. Not a day goes by that she doesn’t have yarn and needles in hand. Her home base is Philadelphia where she lives with her architect husband and two cats, and near her two grown children.

Check Your GaugeWant to ensure your finished project turns out just right? Take a few moments to check your stitch size against the recommended gauge -- doing so makes all the difference!

To check your gauge (stitch size), follow the designer’s instructions to make a swatch with the stitch pattern. Keep in mind that if you choose not to check your stitch size, you may need to purchase more yarn to complete your project (which may also be different dimensions than the specified pattern size)! Want more gauge tips? Head to shop.mybluprint.com/gaugeguide

Noteworthy Information

Stitch GuideK2TOGknit two together.

KF&Bknit in the front and the back of the stitch.

M1 (MAKE ONE)insert the left-hand needle, from front to back, under the strand of yarn which runs between the stitch just worked and the next stitch on the left-hand needle. Knit this stitch through the back loop.

SK2Pslip one stitch, knit two together, pass slipped stitch over the k2tog.

SSKslip, slip, knit the two slipped stitches together.

Designer’s NotesSimple but effective stitch patterns, textures, and color changes make the Gypsy Lane shawl an interesting but relaxing knit. Started at one point and worked with gradual increases to the base, the pattern moves from garter ridges to mesh to textured chevrons; a side edging is picked up last that echoes the chevrons.

Exact gauge is not crucial. Use a needle size that gives you a fabric that you like, but be aware that a change in gauge can affect the amount of yarn used and the size of the finished shawl.
