GWSC NEWS 2019

Dear Parents and Guardians,

What a wonderful few weeks we have had at GWSC! As always, our staff and students have been

busily engaged in a wide variety of activities. Above and beyond the teaching and learning that occurs

on a daily basis at the College, we have once again demonstrated our care and commitment to a range

of charities. The World’s Greatest Shave saw 18 students and two teachers shave their heads in front

of an audience of 1000+ staff and students. I am inspired by the willingness of our students and staff

to sacrifice their hair for such a special cause. All up, over $10,000 was raised for the Leukaemia

Foundation. We are currently in the midst of Cultural Diversity Week, which provides us with an

opportunity to celebrate diversity and our recognition of the myriad of cultures that are represented

within the College. This is very timely for our community considering the tragedy of events that

unfolded in New Zealand last week. We have also celebrated International Women’s Day this term,

with a range of activities for students over the course of the day that helped them to gain a greater

understanding of the impact of gender stereotypes.

Our Year 7 students have now all participated in the orientation outdoor education camp at Grantville.

This provided a wonderful opportunity for them to get to know their peers and teachers in an

environment away from the College. Many lifelong friendships are forged on school camps. I would

like to take this opportunity to thank Ms Amelia Bone for her dedication to the organisation of the three

camps over the course of the term. All in all, a very busy term! As always, I thank our team of dedicated

staff who continue to deliver excellent teaching to our students, as well as support with the management

of the many activities that occur across the College.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new School Council and thank them for their time

and interest in ensuring that GWSC continues to provide outstanding educational opportunities for our

students. With this in mind, I welcome the following parents, staff and students to the 2019 GWSC

Congratulations Ali Ramezaniotaghvar 2019 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix STEM Challenge Champion

We would like to congratulate Ali Ramezaniotaghvar of 9G2 on his victory in the Australian Formula 1 Grand

Prix STEM Challenge for 2019. This national competition is run by the Australian Grand Prix Corporation in

conjunction with The STEM Circle and aims to provide school students with opportunities to learn more about

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics; whilst sparking their curiosity and building their logical,

creative and adventurous thinking capabilities. The 2019 F1 AusGP STEM Challenge focussed on the design of

a Flying F1 Car and required students to engage with scientific literature and utilise various design thinking

strategies to explore aerodynamics, forces and related engineering principles employed by high performance

Formula 1 teams.

Ali worked tirelessly on his Flying F1 Car challenge entry in Research Science throughout Term 1, dedicating

many hours to research and develop his prototype ‘Veras 200’ flying F1 vehicle. His ‘Veras 200’ design

incorporated many unique and cutting edge specifications, including monocrystalline solar panels feeding into

lithium ion battery hubs, two electric jet engines, carbon fibre chassis components, retractable and adjustable

wings to provide lift in the air and also sufficient aerodynamic downforce when on the ground, as well as

Nitrogen inflated hypersoft tyres with intelligent sensors. The panel of expert judges were absolutely blown

away by the detail and thought which Ali had put into his design, expressing this to him during his behind the

scenes Pit Lane Walk and Formula 1 Teams Garage tour at the F1 AusGP. Ali was also presented with his

Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix STEM Challenge award on the main stage at the F1 AusGP, receiving a round

of rapturous applause from the crowd in addition to his special Formula 1 prize pack! Well done again Ali, we

look forward to following your future career in the F1 or a STEM related field!





‘Driving Learning’ Education Program at the 2019 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix

Year 9 Research Science - STEM Excursion

Our Year 9 Research Science class were recently invited to participate in the ‘Driving Learning’ Education Program at the

2019 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix. This program strives to inspire the next generation to engage with Science,

Technology, Engineering and Mathematics focused curriculum opportunities and industries, through active investigation

and exposure to real world STEM platforms and technologies.

Throughout the ‘Driving Learning’ program, which was based at the F1 AusGP ‘Innovation and Technology Hub’, our

budding research scientists were involved in a range of workshops and activations where they had hands-on

experiences with cutting edge technologies including modular robotics, coding, 3D printing, flight simulators, drones,

augmented and virtual reality, in addition to mechanical engineering. They also tackled STEM design challenges and

spoke with representatives from technical areas of the Formula 1, motor sport authorities, leading universities, Victoria

Police and the Australian Defence Force; providing our students with further insights into the world of STEM related

industries and the associated career opportunities available to them.

Our students were also invited to watch all of the action out on the track, including the spectacular Formula 1 vehicles

and V8 Supercars; with the noise, raw power and exceptional speed of these machines something to behold. We were

also lucky enough to witness a superb aerial display from the Royal Australian Navy ‘MRH-90 Taipan’ Helicopter and the

Royal Australian Air Force ‘F/A-18 Hornet’ Fighter Aircraft, which ruled the sky above the Albert Park circuit.

All of our students represented our College extremely well during this experience, learning a lot about STEM and the

incredible world of Formula 1 motor sports. We would like to thank Mr Reischel for accompanying our Research Science

class to the F1 AusGP for the ‘Driving Learning’ Education Program, your time and efforts were greatly appreciated.

MEDIA RELEASE

Local student off to Canberra to contribute to political debate

March 2019

From Tuesday 19 March to Thursday 21 March 2019, Asal Loni from Glen Waverley

Secondary College will be among 120 Year 11 and 12 students from around Australia

attending the 24th National Schools Constitutional Convention (NSCC), being held at

the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, Canberra. The

Convention is supported by all state and territory Ministers and funded by the

Australian Government Department of Education and Training.

The topic for the 2019 Convention is, ‘A new constitutional preamble for Australia?’ This topic will provide students with

the opportunity to explore the present Constitution and if a preamble is required. A range of stimulus speakers will

discuss the issues with students for them to debate with all delegates.

Outcomes from the Convention will be incorporated into a Communiqué that will be presented to the Deputy President

of the Senate, Senator Sue Lines, for tabling in Parliament and recorded in Hansard.

As a national delegate Asal will travel in a group of 25 students from Victoria.

“This provides me with a wonderful opportunity to hear from expert speakers and learn about

constitutional reform. I look forward to contributing to the debate on this important topic.”]

Other elements of the program will include a meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, The Hon Tony

Smith MP at Parliament House, and a dinner at the High Court of Australia.

GWSC Sports Report

Division Swimming was held on Friday the 1st of March at the Ringwood Aquatic Centre. There were many outstanding efforts during the day. To make it through to the next round, the competitors had to place first in their age group. It was such a hot day so everyone was dying to jump in the pool, as all of our swimmers did exceptionally well and tried their absolute best. Thank you to all of the teachers who helped on the day, the students who helped run the day and a big thank you to Mr Crotty for his organisation. The day wouldn’t have been possible without all of you. The following students made it through to the Region Finals: Lachlan Jones, Asal Loni, Soraya Mazoori, Yali Raber, Sendiya Sandanayake Justin Zou and Vivian Zou for making it to Regionals in their individual events. We would also like to congratulate the Girls U15 and Boys U16 freestyle relay teams, who will progress through to the regional competition. Next term we also have a lot of exciting sporting events to come. Cross country is on the 7th of May and there trainings held on the oval at lunchtime on Friday’s, for all who are looking to participate. We will have cross country training every Tuesday and Friday at lunch to help prepare for the event. You are still welcome to come along even if you’re not participating and just want to improve your overall fitness. If you didn’t get a chance to

go to the meeting, you can see Mr Crotty in Middle School if you’re keen to be a part of the team.

Next term we will be running the Middle

School House Athletics Carnival, and in just a

few weeks the Senior School Athletics will take

place on Friday the 29th of March. Don’t forget

to consent and pay online. Senior students

must have paid and consented by the end of

this week, and the Middle School event must be

paid and consented for by the end of Term 1.

Term 2 sport sign-ups are now up in the gym.

The sports on offer are football (AFL), netball,

badminton and soccer. Don’t forget to sign up!

Worlds Greatest Shave Newsletter Article: On Thursday 14th of March was the annual World’s Greatest Shave! It was great to see students and staff getting involved with this event by donating, getting their hair sprayed, buying tattoos and wristbands and by simply coming along to support their peers and teachers who were ‘being brave and shaving’ their heads. Each year the number of people participating and coming over to support is unbelievable. It was wonderful to see everyone bombarding the hair spray station to get their hair sprayed with crazy colours and the new addition of tattoos and wristbands being a hit as well. This year we had a stunnning 18 people shave their heads in support of the Leukemia foundation! Thank you to our hairdressers Taylah and Lily from Martin Hall hairdressing and also Mrs Chalmers and Mrs Gagliardi for stepping in at such short notice. I would also like to thank the middle and senior school captains who were our MCs for this program and did a fantastic job! Finally, a massive thank you to Liz and tech crew for making this event possible, from making posters, running the activities and providing us with engaging music. Our goal this year was to raise $5000 but with our combined efforts we managed to raise over $8000 and still counting! Thank you again to everyone who got involved in this fundraising event to help children with blood cancer and showing your support.

Student Accident Insurance/Ambulance Cover Arrangements and Private Property Brought

to Schools

Schools are reminded that the Department does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance

cover for students. Parents and guardians of students, who do not have student accident

insurance/ambulance cover, are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured

students, including the cost of ambulance attendance/transport and any other transport costs.

Student accident insurance/ambulance cover policies are available from some commercial insurers,

and can be obtained by school councils on a whole-of-school basis, or by parents/guardians for

individual students.

Private property brought to school by students, staff or visitors is not insured and the Department does

not accept any responsibility for any loss or damage.
