“Is Riding Season Just Around the Corner?”From Bill Nickal

I don’t know about most of you, but I sure am fed up with all this Siberian cold weather that has put its grip on Central New York in the month of February! As we move ahead to March we can only hope the sun will shine and melt away all the snow and cold “Old Man Winter “ has bestowed upon us.

If you missed our February gathering we sure had a lot of laughs. We spent some time discussing the possibility of bringing back a “Poker Run or Scavenger Hunt”. There were a lot of great ideas and suggestions and I must say excitement. While reading through the many newsletters from our past years for the “Blast from the Past” column in our newsletter, I can see how events like the poker run and scavenger hunt were such a big part of our history and shaping the Chapter “D” we have today. Organized rides such as these brought fun and excitement to the rides as they weaved their way through the Central NY region. Many of the events ended in a Bar-B-Que at a local Fire Department or Legion Hall. Many added prizes or riders searched for local history using clues provided. Most of all, it was the many chapter members working together to organize and participate in the event, whether it was members such as Debbie Pratt or Shirley Hammond organizing the Bar-B-Que or Jim Tillotson, Dan Frigon or Merwin Backus organizing the run. It is the participation by Chapter members that make these events so successful and fun!

I have spoken with many of our long time members and we all feel that adding an event such as a Scavenger Hunt would bring some excitement to the Bi-State Convention in August. We still have many logistical questions but have agreed to move forward to see if the District accepts our offer to do a Scavenger Hunt. We will begin work on a route of travel, a day or days to offer the event, and, members to help organize and execute the event. We all agreed it would be exciting to participate, and, if successful, look at hosting such an event in 2016. If you would like to help with this year’s event planning, please let myself or Lisa know. All are welcome!

Our other exciting addition this year is the revival of the “Brian O’Brien’s Gold Wing Nut!” With some subtle changes the “Gold Wing Nut” will make its return! Here is how it works... participation in each Chapter Gathering, Chapter Event (such as Dinner Ride, Planned Ride, Social Event, PLP or class) will earn members (1) one Gold Wing Nut. For each NY District, Region or National Event (such as Ride-In, Bi-State Convention, Region Rallies, Wing Ding) will earn members (2) Gold Wing Nuts. For hosting an event (such as Progressive Dinner or Tech Day) or leading a scheduled ride members earn an additional (1) one Gold Wing Nut. At the November Gathering the Gold Wing Nuts will be collected and counted. At the December Holiday party prizes will be given to the three Chapter members who have earned the most “Gold Wing Nuts” during the past year. Members will be given credit for wing nuts earned beginning in January 2015.

So get ready for some fun, exciting new events, and begin earning the “Brian O’Brien Gold Wing Nuts.” As always, visit us on the web at http://gwrra-ny-d.org and like us on Facebook at Goldwing Chapterdny.

...Chapter Rider Educator.....

Rider Education Levels Program Think about this if you are not in the levels program!

GWRRA makes available to Rider & Co-Riders the Levels Program. This program provides increased rider knowledge and skills, accident prevention, reduced injuries and fatalities, gives the public a better image of motorcycling the GWRRA way, and, more enjoyment of riding for the Rider & Co-Riders.

LEVEL 1: {Safety by Commitment} This levels program represents the commitment by the Rider and/or Co-Rider to practice and encourage safe motorcycle operation when operating their motorcycle. Requirements for Level 1 are: having a current membership with GWRRA and express the commitment of the Rider/Co-Rider to strive for and practice safe riding. The commitment to safe riding is indicated by the accumulation since joining GWRRA of accident free miles and are accumulated in 5000 mile increments. The insignia is a round Safe Miles patch with a rocker for the Rider/Co-Rider. There is a safe miles pin with the patch. Submit a completed RE Levels form {N7} to the Chapter Educator.

LEVEL 2: {Safety by Education} This represents the commitment of the Rider/Co-Rider to ride safer by taking approved motorcycle training from MSF, GWRRA's "On Bike" exercises (ERC,ARC,TRC,TTRC,PLP) on annual intervals in order to build skills and awareness. Classes can be obtained by talking to your Chapter Educator or through the District Educator on classes that may be coming up in or near your area. There is an "Off Bike" seminar for the Co-Riders called Co-Rider or Co-Rider2. Requirements for Level 2 are: current membership, be enrolled in the Level 1, have ridden 5000 safe miles, current motorcycle license, and have completed an approved riding Rider Course within the past 3 years. Co-Rider Requirements: must be enrolled as a Level 1, have 5000 safe miles, and completed an approved 2up Rider Course or GWRRA Co-Rider seminar within the past 3 years. The patch is triangle in shape. Annual renewal is necessary, renewal pins & bars can be purchased to show your years of commitment. Submit a completed RE Levels form {N7} to the Chapter Educator.

Page 4: GWRRA Region B NY District - Chapter D · Scavenger Hunt. We will begin work on a route of travel, a day or days to offer the event, and, members to help organize and execute the

LEVEL 3: {Safety by Preparedness} This represents the commitment of the Rider/Co-Rider to be prepared in the event of an accident to give aid and possibly saving a life. This would be achieved by taking the GWRRA Medic First Aid course or another type of First Aid and CPR training program, and carrying a First Aid kit on your bike at all times. Requirements: current membership in GWRRA, enrolled and current in Level 2, completed an approved "On Bike" Rider Course within the past 3 years (PLP doesn't fall in this category), maintain First Aid, CPR or Medic First Aid, carry a First Aid kit on the bike and complete a GWRRA Motorist Awareness Seminar (New last year). Co-Rider Requirements: Must be enrolled in Level 2, have completed a 2up Rider Course or Co-Rider Seminar in the past 3 years, maintain current First Aid or CPR or Medic First Aid, completed a Motorist Awareness Seminar, and submit an completed RE Levels application {N7}. The patch is a rocker that goes above your Level 2 triangle patch.

LEVEL 4: {Safety by Enhanced Commitment and Preparedness} This is the most prestigious level within the Rider Education Levels program and is referred to as the "Master Tour Rider/Co-Rider". It represents the highest commitment by the Rider/Co-Rider towards safe riding and preparedness. This commitment is show by a demonstrated history of safe miles, continuing education and current in both First Aid and CPR. The Tour Rider/Co-Rider are an example to everyone of the highest level of commitment to safe motorcycle operation and preparedness. Requirements for Rider/Co-Rider: current in Level 3 for at least 1 year, ridden 25,000 safe miles, be current in First Aid & CPR, with ATGATT > DOT approved helmet, full finger gloves, over the ankle foot protection, jacket/long sleeve shirt (denim). Also need a completed Master Tour Rider/Co-Rider application {N9}, a written recommendation from the Chapter Educator and the appropriate fee ($35.00) to the District Educator with final approval by the Region Educator. Once approved it is sent to GWRRA headquarters. In return you will receive a triangle patch with a special Master # on it.

This is a very good program to working your way to be a safer rider and show a commitment in Rider Education .

GWRRA's mission for the levels program is to Save lives through quality world class Education >>>>>>> Safety is for life :)

...to our Membership Enhancement Coordinator....

At our February gathering, we had 23 members in attendance and it was great having Chris Helwig with us! As the weather begins to warm up…and let’s hope it will… I do hope we’ll see other members whom we haven’t seen in awhile, join us. If you’re not really into the “gathering/meeting” thing, maybe you would like to join us on one of our rides or other fun-filled activities. On Feb 25th, there were 12 Chapter D members who enjoyed a great meal at the Twin Trees in North Syracuse. Not only was the food great, but the laughter was so enjoyable. Some of our members entertained us with some of their personal stories. I honestly believe Dave Hartley needs to seek out a different “winter” hobby!!!

I’ll be continuing to circulate the “Sign-in” sheet as well as the “Birthday/Anniversary” sheet, so you can check to make sure your info on the sheets is correct. We also have a sheet being circulated which will be used for “Impromptu rides” in the future. That will give other members the best way to contact you in the event there is going to be an impromptu ride. Putting your name on this list is strictly voluntary.

I’ve just received the Feb 2015 ARL report and noticed there is a NEW member from Pulaski who has been assigned to Chapter D. There is also a PROSPECTIVE member from Weedsport, assigned to Chapter D. I’ll be contacting these folks within the next couple of days.

As always, should you be aware of a motorcyclist who either doesn’t belong to GWRRA or maybe doesn’t attend a Chapter”s gatherings, etc., please pass along the following links:For Free 2 month Trial Membership: http://www.gwrra.org/freetrial.html Chapter D’s Webpage: http://gwrra-ny-d.org/OR…invite them to our gathering!
