...to our Chapter Directors.....

Hi everyone!

Another month has gone by, Wing Ding is over, the Bi-State Convention is about to start, and soon the State Fair will be here. Summer is flying by quickly.

The Ride for Kids was held on July 21, 2013. The new route was a beautiful ride and the weather cooperated. Approximately eight members from Chapter D participated in this ride, which raises money to benefit pediatric brain tumor research. It felt great to be part of this worthwhile cause.

On July 24, we held our scheduled dinner ride at Port Byron Diner. Seven couples, two couples of which were new members to GWRRA and Chapter D, gathered for dinner and lively conversation. On July 27, Rick Reardon led five bikes for our scheduled Chapter ride to Tug Hill. The ride is a scheduled half-day ride for the Bi-State Convention. The test run went very well, the weather was perfect, and everyone seemed to enjoy the route. Those on the ride felt that the route will be a great experience for those who have not had an opportunity to see some of upstate's beauty.

Bill and Julie Spencer are asking for volunteers to staff the the Guided Ride table at the Bi-State Convention. Volunteers are needed for Thursday, August 8 and Friday, August 9 from 8 am to 4 pm, and Saturday, August 10 from 8 am to 1 pm. Any time frame you can volunteer will be greatly appreciated. Call Bill and Julie at 315-673-2641 to volunteer.

As you all know, the next big event we have scheduled is the New York and New Jersey Bi-State Convention, which will be held August 8, 9 , 10 and 11 at the Holiday Inn on Electronics Parkway in Liverpool. Check out the New York District website at www.gwrra-ny.org for the schedule of events and rides. Hope to see as many of you there as possible!

Our next gathering is scheduled for Wednesday, August 14 at The Euclid (6:00 pm for dinner and 7:00 pm for the gathering). Chris and I are thinking ahead to our Holiday Party and would like to set up a committee to plan this year's event. At the gathering we will be asking for volunteers to serve on this committee.

Hope to see you soon!

“Our First Wing Ding- All We Expected and More”(Part Two)

Last month I wrote about the excitement Lisa and I had as we prepared to travel to Greenville, South Carolina for our first Wing Ding. That’s right we were “Newbie’s”!

On June 30th we met our traveling partners, Rick/Pam and Keith/Alice, in the early morning hours to get a jump on the traffic. With all the preparation and packing complete it was time to travel. We woke that morning to FOG in the valleys, but it burned off quickly. Our first day’s journey would take us through the hills and plains of Pennsylvania with our first over night stay in Johnstown. A warm and humid day would unfold. As we crossed into PA from NY we heard some familiar voices on the CB. As luck would have it another group from our Chapter “D” would cross our path. We laughed and chatted back and forth as each group traveled their planned route. This would not be our last sighting of the group during our two and a half days of travel.

After a mid-morning snack/rest break we continued on to enjoy the sites and sounds of the Pennsylvania landscape. Our scheduled lunch turned out to be a little more “fine dining” experience then we wanted, so we continued on PA highway 6 west until we found a diner more befitting our lunch requirements and dress code. After a hearty lunch and a well-enjoyed break we mounted our trusty Wings to continue our trek south. Lead rider and part-time weatherman Rick called out our first weather alert of the day (and not the last)! With imminent rain on the horizon Rick spotted a nice parking lot ahead and we all pulled off safely to don our trusty rain gear. To our surprise and their enjoyment, the parking lot was in front of an Elderly Care Facility. Many of the residents were sitting on the front porch in their rocking chairs watching us gracefully do the “Rain Gear Dance”. As we left the facility we drove around a nice flagpole circle in front of the facility giving them a wave of the hand and toot of the horn to say thank-you and good-bye. I bet it was the talk of the dinner table and we all had a great laugh! After a few more showers the day ended with a nice stay in Johnstown.

Day two would begin with an emotional visit to the “Flight 93” National Park Memorial in Shanksville, PA. If you have not visited the site, I highly recommend placing it on your list of places to visit. Just a few short miles from Johnstown, the site of a national tragedy sits quietly on a Pennsylvania hillside. We spent about an hour walking the site, paying our respects, and learning more about the crash.

As we continued our journey into West Virginia, along Highway 219 the views were spectacular! Keith, the traveling guru that he is, taught us a new term “A Panorama on a Horizontal”! Then with a bit of laughter, he explained the wonderful views we all took in as we reached those high peaks of the Appalachian’s and looked across the mountain range. As lunch approached we reached the little historic village of Thomas, West Virginia. Many of the buildings date back to late 1800’s to early 1900’s. We had a scheduled stop at a local venue called the “Purple Fiddle” (must see- pictures on Chapter D Shutterfly page, go to our web page). It is a popular establishment serving lunch, dinner and late night snacks, as the Bluegrass music is played by many local and some very famous artists. We continued our trip

south after lunch and so did the rain. Did I mention “RAIN”! This would be the hallmark of our first Wing Ding. Rain, lots of rain!

We arrived in Greensboro on July 2nd as did many other riders from across the country and internationally. Soon many of our fellow Chapter D, New York members would fill the Main Stay Suites in Greensboro. In all I think we would have some 35 plus members attend the event. On Wednesday July 3rd we would all line up and convoy over to the convention center about seven miles away. With Bill and Julie Spencer (many thanks) as the lead bike, we all followed like little ducklings across town. With about 12 bikes all in a row it looked like a well-choreographed event. I must say I had a great feeling of pride as we all arrived and many on-lookers turned their heads to look as we parked our bikes, some pulling trailers.

After picking up our registration packets we entered the main vendor area to lights out, darkness! Not a good start for our first impression of a Wing Ding. Apparently a fuse decided to fail and out went the lights and air conditioning. Soon things would return to normal and we would enjoy seeing the many vendors, accessories and custom painting we could add to our Goldwing. We would attend a few well-taught seminars and meet many new friends as we roamed from booth to booth with our bright “Yellow” Newbie button on. Rain, yes I did say rain, would continue to taunt us each day. I’m not sure we were riding a Gold Wing or sitting on a “Land Kayak”! We were becoming well trained in putting on or taking off our rain gear. In the vendor room, rain gear of every form would begin disappearing from the shelves. By the last day, I’m pretty sure you would not find one pair of rain gear left. The many outdoor events scheduled for the July 4th celebration were either cancelled or moved indoors, but in good GWRRA fashion we had lots of fun any way! Many thanks to Brian and Laurie for arranging a pizza get together for all 30 plus chapter members, past and present, in short notice. It was great friends, fellowship and fun!

When all was said and done Mother Nature certainly rained on Wing Ding 35. I’m sure Lisa and I will remember the weather as part of our first Wing Ding, but most of all we will remember the new friends, the exciting journey to Greensboro SC and the FUN we shared with our many friends. We all made it home safely, except for Don’s bike, which is still in South Carolina. It was a very memorable trip and the Great Smokey Mountains are a sight to see. It was everything I expected and more. Memories we will cherish for a lifetime!

See you in Madison Wisconsin for Wing Ding 36!

Looking for HazardsLooking for hazards and being seen are two critical safety factors in riding. Our vision plays a key factor in our decisions we make while riding. Scanning ahead for trouble, riding too fast coming to that corner (oh - I need to slow down), what about that car at the intersection - did the driver see you, are all things to take into consideration. Just because the driver looked at you doesn't mean that they "see" you. This is where having an extra light on the bike and or wearing Hi-Vis clothing takes center stage.

Look FOR HAZARD: (Scan) aggressively by keeping your eyes moving - quickly scan left and right, looking in the mirrors to see what may be coming from behind. Remember - head and eyes up, scanning about 12 seconds ahead and move your head and look before you change lanes, you may miss something by looking in the mirror before moving. This is part of the SAA (Seek, Anticipate, Act) we have talked about before.

We look when our eyes are open but sometimes we don't see (getting the full picture), this could mean the difference of having a good ride or having a crash. Make sure you mentally acknowledge what you see to reduce the hazard.

HAZARDS:1) Busy traffic: Will tend to make us scan more aggressively and further ahead as speeds increase unlike riding on a back country road with no traffic - more relaxed type of riding. Be mindful of wildlife and farm animals while enjoying the countryside.

2) Lane position and Following distance: 2 ways to reduce the chances of a potential incident, riding in the left/center track of your lane - let people know you are behind them. Follow no less than 2 seconds from the vehicle in front of you - of course that distance will increase if it's raining, pulling a trailer, night time or following a large truck. We know it is unsafe to ride behind or along side a large truck, because we can't see what is in front and large trucks hide objects that may be on the roadway. Also, if a tire blows on the truck it could spell disaster. Never follow a large truck for very long and if passing, don't waste time, get by them as quickly and safely as possible.

3) Read the road: If we see a hazard in the road we may need to slow or speed up to get away from the hazard or change lanes, looking well ahead (get the BIG picture) you should determine which action in time to avoid the hazard.

4) Traffic Vision: Riding in traffic requires a heightened awareness and that means you need to be scanning more aggressively. You should be covering the brakes coming up to intersections. Also remember to monitor your mirrors and come to a stop in first gear, left foot down and right foot on rear brake and be able to move if that person behind isn't going to slow down. Leave yourself an OUT. (Playing the "What if game" when riding can help in reaction time because you may have thought about that scenario in your head before).

Page 6: GWRRA Region B NY District - Chapter D...Another month has gone by, Wing Ding is over, the Bi-State Convention is about to start, and soon the State Fair will be here. Summer is flying

5) Cornering Vision: Look where you want to go. Point your eyes thru the corner to the exit. You can't just look into the turn, but, thru the turn. By looking thru the turn, you may pick up a hazard ahead and adjust your speed or direction before you get into the turn. Remember, we try to get our adjustments done before entering a turn, this includes downshifting and braking.

6) Target Fixation: This is not good, but, people without rider training get into trouble with this - fixation on the hazard, then riding into it because they couldn't turn out of the way.

7) Vision Blockers: These are factors that hinder your vision which could include: sun glare, incorrect eye protection, night time riding, inclement weather (rain, fog), impairment caused by aging eyes, alcohol, drugs, and emotional distractions. Morning or afternoon rides heading into a blinding sun could cause a mishap from not being able to see an object.

8) Aging Eyes: Yes, when I turned 50 the eyes when downhill pretty fast! Get annual eye exams to stay on top of early eye problems. We only have 2 of them and it's nice to see out of both of them.

In Summary: Scan (keep your eyes moving) front, back, side to side and mirrors; look where you want to go, change speed and or direction if needed to avoid a hazard; pick a track where you will be seen; no target fixation. Wear sun glasses when the sun is in your eyes; annual eye exam; no drugs or alcohol when riding. Be seen (wear Hi-Vis clothing and add extra lights on the bike).

...to our Technical Contributor....

This article appeared in the Nov. 2012 issue of Cycle World. Jim will be showing me where to apply this product on the motorcycle prior to our next meeting so that I might be more familiar with the product and how it works. From what I’ve read, there have been other products before this and whether they worked or not, this product seems to have an advantage. Read on and if you have any questions, I’ll be happy to let Jim answer them for you!

Trish ~ submitting for the Tech Report

Tool TimeAt first, the announcement of yet another thread-locking compound seems about as groundbreaking

as a new way to boil water. When it comes to thread lockers, Loctite, Permatex, 3M and an assortment of other companies already have the bases covered. But this one is different. It's called VibraStop, and rather than being designed to hold nuts and bolts in a never-let-me-go death grip, this brush-on liquid is primarily intended to prevent fasteners of all kinds from loosening due to vibration.

Several factors make Vibra-Stop different than other thread lockers. For one, it's an acrylic-based resin that doesn't have to be applied right before installation; you can brush it on a nut, bolt or whatever and then store the fastener indefinitely before use, with no loss of effectiveness as a result. Second, it's reusable; the manufacturer, Tectorius North America (www.tectorius. corn), claims that a fastener coated with Vibra-Stop can be installed, removed and reinstalled up to five times without reapplication—although my experience with the product indicates that after four uses, its effectiveness diminishes enough to warrant re-coating. Third, it works on plastic, wood and other none metallic surfaces; this makes it ideal for applications such as small plastic screws in instruments and electrical components, as well as on other fasteners with soft, fine threads. Fourth, it isn't limited just to threaded fasteners; it also can help secure dowels, guide pins and the like. And finally, because it is waterproof and resistant to most solvents, it can seal the area around a bolt, stud or dowel.

Vibra-Stop is not a replacement for high-strength thread lockers such as Loctite Blue or Red. So, if your intent is to secure the axle nuts on your record-breaking land-speed racer, this isn't the answer. But if you want to prevent vibration and other chatter-type movement from loosening some of the key hardware on your street or dirt motorcycle—or your car, truck, snowblower or GSX-Repowered skateboard—Vibra-Stop may be the answer, especially for fasteners you frequently have to remove and reinstall.

Vibra-Stop is a new product, and for the present, it is not yet sold in retail stores. It can be purchased directly from Tectorius by calling the company at 586/232-3999 or e-mailing the request to cinthia@ tectorius.com. A 1.01-ounce bottle sells for $18, or 2 for $25. Shipping is free regardless of the number of bottles purchased.

...to our Membership Enhancement Coordinator....

The “ Free 2 Month Trial Membership” deal is working!!! At our last dinner ride to Port Byron Diner, we had 2 new couples who were taking advantage of the Trial membership and they decided to join us for dinner. They are Scott & Dawn Rempel and also Bob & Valerie Weiss. Scott & Dawn had attended a couple of our gatherings prior to this dinner. Due to some mix-up in their personal data, they had to call National to have the corrections made to their trial membership data. At the same time, they decided they might just as well join GWRRA and that they did…right over the phone! Let’s be sure to extend to them our support when we see them again. I’ve also heard from Bob & Valerie and learned they went on a ride with a few of our members and now they are hoping to stop by the Bi-State Convention to check things out. It sounds to me like they are quite interested in what GWRRA has to offer. Let’s also make them feel welcomed when we see them…hopefully at the Aug. 14th gathering! I’ve also made contact with another Trial Membership couple who live in Lewis, NY. They are on our email list, so even though they live quite a distance away, they will be aware of our activities and maybe someday they’ll surprise us and show up for a Chapter D event.

As always, if any of you become aware of anyone who might be interested in taking advantage of the free 2 month Trial Membership, please point them in this direction: →

...to a Guest Comment

As Bill and Lisa noted in their column above, Wing Ding was marred somewhat by the rainy spell we had. Despite this, there were some very bright spots we would like to comment on... some great moments of “sunshine” when people went above and beyond. The folks at the Mainstay couldn’t have been more helpful...shuttling us around in the van so we could stay dry, helping launder some of our clothes, accomodating our room issues, and more. Then we had Mike Jedra (and others?) step forward to replace parts in another members bike that was not running well. As mentioned above, Brian and Laurie O’Brien handled arrangements for an impromptu pizza party. And finally, and certainly not least, former Chapter D members (and CD’s) Dale and Michelle Yager trailered the Chapter D member bike that was not running well back to a dealership near where they live in North Carolina. Yes, we will remember the rain, but, we’ll also remember the many bright spots.
