By Guy Curtrightstaff correspondent

it would be easy to assume it all began with maya moore, but that wouldn’t really be accurate.

As great as moore was at col-lins Hill, Gwinnett county’s reign in girls basketball began even before the connecticut All-American and wnbA rookie of the year got to high school.

Greater Atlanta christian, which produced Georgia’s first great player in cindy brogdon, won three state championships in the 1970s and two more in the early 1980s. in fact, Gwin-nett had 15 state championships before collins Hill started its run of three straight titles with moore in 2005.

there is no doubting, though, that the maya years were a gold-en time in Gwinnett girls basket-ball. collins Hill was named the no. 1 team in the nation in 2007, the third straight year the county produced two state champs.

most thought those years would never be matched. instead, excellence has just produced more excellence as the county continues to grow.

the time when Gwinnett claimed just one girls state title — south Gwinnett in 1995 — over a 20-year period now seems so, so long ago.

wesleyan has won four straight state titles, bringing its total to eight in 10 years. buford has won three in a row and norcross has captured back-to-back champion-ships.

All three schools are in posi-tion to add to their title streaks this season. in fact, all three could have their best teams ever.

Even scarier, none of the squads are senior dominated.

it is the junior class that has

kept college coaches flocking to Gwinnett.

moore was the nation’s con-sensus top high school player her final two seasons. Gwinnett may not have the top player right now, but it has some that are awfully close.

Although buford’s Andraya carter, heading to tennessee, is ranked as the no. 17 senior by EsPnu, that pales in compari-son to the ranking of some of the county’s underclassmen.

EsPnu ranks Kaela davis, carter’s buford teammate, as the no. 2 junior, just a spot ahead of diamond deshields of norcross. And the list of top juniors in the county certainly doesn’t stop there.

EsPnu ranks the top 60 ju-niors in the nation. six play in Gwinnett county.

behind davis and deshields are lexie brown of north Gwin-nett at no. 17, shayla cooper of norcross at no. 26, Kristina nel-son of buford at no. 30 and Pey-ton whitted of north Gwinnett at no. 60.

there is plenty of talent com-ing along behind them as well. wesleyan has built its success under coach Jan Azar on conti-nuity and system rather than star power. but nikki mcdonald is ranked as one of the top fresh-men in the nation by EsPnu and could be the school’s next Anne marie Armstrong.

in Azar, Angie Hembree of

norcross and buford’s Gene durden, Gwinnett has three of the most successful coaches in Geor-gia. Hembree won three state titles at collins Hill, the first two prior to moore, to give her five total championships.

Gwinnett has dominated in AAAAA, AA and A, winning 23 of the possible 33 titles in those classifications the past 11 years. the county has had triple winners four times and only one champi-on just three times.

of course, Gwinnett boys have also had success. the state titles by the norcross and GAc boys last year gave those schools sweeps and the county a state-record five championships in one season.

but the boys’ 20 state crowns can’t compare to the girls titles despite coach Eddie martin’s five state championships in six years with norcross and now GAc.

class A girls champ wesleyan defeated class AA champ buford last year and lost by just a point in overtime to class AAAAA win-ner norcross.

this season, buford and wes-leyan will both be in the nike tournament of champions in Arizona before christmas.

moore led collins Hill to the 2006 title in that prestigious event, enhancing Gwinnett’s bas-ketball reputation.

moore has been gone five years now, but girl power still rules in Gwinnett.

Leading scorer and rebounder T.J. Shipes is one of two returning starters and the Wolves received a big boost when A.J. Davis transferred from GAC. Shipes, who is headed to Georgia State, averaged 14.6 points and 8.6 rebounds last season. Davis, also 6-foot-8, contributed 12.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game for GAC as a sophomore. The twin brother of Buford girls standout Kaela Davis had three double-doubles in the state tournament. The Wolves also added transfers Isaiah Williams (St. Francis) and Justice Bartley (Lanier). wortH NotiNg: Buford increased its win total by 15 games last season in Allen Whitehart’s first year as coach. Kaela Davis, who also has committed to Tennessee, is one of the top juniors in the nation and the Wolves have added junior transfer Kristina Nelson from Greater Atlanta Christian to give them even more size. Carter, Davis and Nelson were all first-team all-county picks by the Gwin-nett Daily Post last season. Carter averaged 14.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.8 steals and 2.1 assists while playing shutdown defense for the Wolves a year ago, and Davis contributed 18.2 points and 5.5 rebounds. Nelson aver-aged 15.5 points and 6.8 rebounds for GAC, which lost to Buford in the state championship game. wortH NotiNg: In addition to Carter and Davis, Buford returns starting point guard Maya Dillard and top reserve MacKenzie Darrah, who had a big offen-sive outburst in the title game. Five players, led by the dynamic Saah Nimley, graduated and Andre Allen, who would have given the team at lease one returning starter, transferred. Former assistant Eric Nathan was promoted to replace Grayson and he inherits a rebuilding process made more difficult by the departure of Allen, an hon-orable mention all-region pick. The Eagles will count on senior Conner Iverson for leadership. John Carlos Reyes offers size inside at 6-foot-7. Devin Mitchell is another promising sophomore and is the Eagles’ second-tallest player at 6-foot-3. wortH NotiNg: It will be impossible to replace three-year starter Nimley, who averaged 22 points each of the past two seasons despite being only 5-foot-8. In Nimley’s three years as a starter, the Eagles were 59-23. Freshman Brittany Stowers gives the Eagles needed height and sopho-more Jasmine Knight is another key addition. wortH NotiNg: Collins Hill was edged 63-60 by Mill Creek in the region quarterfinals and lost out on a trip to the state tournament for a fourth straight year. Katie Powell was a first-team all-region choice as a freshman, averaging 11.8 points and 7.3 rebounds. Joi Jones, the key reserve last season, averaged 8.1 points. Regine Howard is known for her defense. wortH NotiNg: It won’t be easy to replace Kayla Nolan, who joined Powell on the all-region first team, and two other graduates now playing in college. Brogdon averaged 25.7 points and 11.9 rebounds — both county bests — while also handing out 3.6 assists per game. Davis was second on the team in scoring (12.5) and rebounding (6.8). Hobbs averaged 7.0 points last season and will now be counted on to shoulder the offensive load along with Parkview transfer Delano Spencer, who was a Region 8-AAAAA first-team all-star as a sophomore. But the Spartans face an uphill battle to make it three-for-three. Although just one senior started in the title game last season, GAC will also be without three other regulars this season. Leading scorer and re-bounder Kristina Nelson transferred to Buford, Shannon Cranshaw moved back to Florida and softball standout Sierra Lawrence decided not to play basketball after signing a scholarship with Michigan. Left as the top returnee is sophomore Brianna Cummings, who was second on the team in scoring (12.7) and rebound-ing (5.5) a year ago. Stepping in at point guard for the graduated Chandler Alverson is Sydni Means, a key contributor last season as a freshman. wortH NotiNg: The Spartans went 17-2 after an 8-6 start last season. Both of the losses came against Buford, a team they also beat. The only other Georgia team to beat the Wolves was Class A state champion Wesleyan. With a young team, GAC will have to make strides as the season goes along and use its quickness to overcome a lack of size.

the deep south classic is keeping its traditional dates after christmas, but that isn’t the case for north Gwinnett’s holiday tourna-ment this season.

the Jared cook classic, named after the north grad-uate who plays for the ten-nessee titans in the nFl, will be dec. 20-22 and fea-ture its usual eight boys and eight girls teams.

the bulldogs won both titles last season, with the boys beating a team from Puerto rico. central Gwin-nett, dacula and Grayson will be the county schools competing with north this year. it is cook’s second year helping sponsor the tournament.

the deep south clas-sic began at brookwood in 1991 and grew to 16 boys and 16 girls teams before being cut back to eight of each two years ago. the brookwood girls claimed their first title last year, while mcintosh took the boys championship.

the tournament is dec. 28-30 this year and will again include one team from outside the metro area, with the richmond Acad-emy boys making the trip over from Augusta. collins Hill and Providence chris-tian are the schools from the county joining host brookwood in the event.

the other tournament in the county dec. 28-30 is the lanier christmas

event. there are eight boys and eight girls teams, with mountain view the lo-cal school joining the host longhorns.

Peach state basketball’s first JumpoffPlus.com girls tournament was held last season at duluth, but this year the event for top teams from around the southeast will be held at Holy inno-cents’ in sandy springs on dec. 27-29.

the event will again feature buford, which has won three straight class AA state titles. the wolves were beaten by tennessee champion riverdale in the title game last year.

Gwinnett teams in the field this year in addition to buford are north Gwinnett, duluth and Greater Atlanta christian. there will be four eight-team brackets, with a champion crowned in each.

before christmas, bu-ford will head to Arizona along with four-time de-fending class A state

champ wesleyan for the prestigious nike tourna-ment of champions on dec. 19-23. it is the first trip to the tournament for buford and the second for wesleyan, which also went in 2008.

there is a new thanks-giving event, with the big Apple vs. big Peach chal-lenge at shiloh on wednes-day, Friday and saturday. the event matches top teams from new york and Georgia, with defending class AAAAA state boys champ norcross playing twice.

the two top events the first month of 2012 are the battle of the southeast for girls teams at wesleyan on Jan. 14 and the marriott in-vitational for boys at nor-cross on Jan. 20-21. both events have seven games. the marriott invitational pits a Georgia team against one from out of state, while the girls showcase has a mixture of in-state and out-of-state opponents.

From start to end, big tournaments abound

Jonathan Hemingway, who was the Duluth boys coach when Huckaby was there, comes in as an assistant. wortH NotiNg: Despite being a first-year school, Lanier played plenty of seniors last season and there isn’t much ex-perience coming back. Paul Webb and Simon Shafack did log minutes as freshmen last season, though. Austin Woods is the only senior who is back from last year, but M.J. Bryant will run things at point guard. But coach Jesse McMillan’s team will again have to be reckoned with this season. Derrick Herbert returns at point guard after leading the team in assists a year ago and Tennessee football recruit Jason Croom is a presence inside. Also back is Nate Sims, a sixth-man last season. But the key for the Blue Devils is the arrival of 6-foot-7 junior Harold Givens, who transferred from Northside of Columbus. He is rated as one of Georgia’s top prospects in the Class of 2013. woRtH NotiNg: Norcross will enter the season with a heavy heart after Darrian George and three family members died in a single-car accident in Florida during October. The reason for the optimism is the arrival of 6-foot-9 Robert Carter and 7-foot Trayvon Reed. Carter, who transferred from Thomasville, is ranked as the second-best senior prospect in Georgia by ESPNU. Reed, who moved from Alabama, is rated as the No. 1 sophomore prospect in the state on the same re-cruiting list. Carter led Thomasville to the Class AA state finals as a sophomore and to the quarters last March. wortH NotiNg: Jordan Gaither led a fourth-quarter rally that fell short in a 62-57 loss to eventual champion Berkmar in the region quarters a year ago and returns for his senior sea-son after being a second-team all-region choice. This is coach Kim Rivers’ third season at Shiloh after a successful 14-year stint in Maryland during which he was 315-50 with five titles.

Shiloh made the state tournament four straight years from 2004-2007 under Grant, but the only appearance since came in 2009. Holland Glenn was the only re-turnee with much playing time a year ago after returning starter Jalisa Williams was sidelined. Now Williams is back and things are looking up for the Generals. wortH NotiNg: April was a girls coach in Mississip-pi for six seasons and compiled a 75-32 record before moving to Georgia in 2007 to become athletics director at McNair High School in DeKalb County. The Gener-als’ future looks encouraging with Shiloh Middle School winning the county championship last season with an unbeaten record. Standout Charbonnay Johnson, how-ever, enrolled at Stephenson rather than Shiloh.

South finished first in the regular season a year ago, but was stunned by upstart Archer in the region quarter-finals. Back are first-team all-region choices Logan Adams and Qiydar Davis. Adams, a junior, averaged 15.2 points and 10.7 rebounds last season. Davis, a senior, averaged 17.6 points and 9.9 rebounds. wortH NotiNg: South added Simeon Dennis, who was a second-team all-region choice last sea-son while playing for Central Gwinnett. He averaged 15.2 points and 5.4 rebounds a year ago as a junior. With Dennis joining Adams and Davis, the Comets have a potent scoring trio. Gone are Tina Odume, who led the team with 14 points and 10.4 rebounds per game, as well as Kiara Baker, who averaged 12.7 points and 4.1 assists. Odume was a first-team all-region pick, while Baker made the second team. Of the returnees, senior Tiffany Jenkins and juniors Colette Onenda and Alysia Johnson contributed the most last season. Jenkins and Johnson both averaged 5.2 rebounds and Onenda contributed 2.5 assists. wortH NotiNg: The Comets started 1-5 against a rugged early schedule and then won 13 of their next 16 games, including a victory over region champ Brook-wood in the final game of the regular season. As a No. 3 seed, South gave Alpharetta a battle in the first round of the state tournament before losing 40-37. Jaime Kruppa, who played on South’s unbeaten 1995 state champion-ship team, is in her third season leading the Comets after assisting former coach Mike Allison.
